The Amorous Indies – Baroque to Hip Hop
If none of these takes your fancy, there are hundreds to discover. The more you look the more you will find.
This is in response to Sammi Cox’s Weekend Writing Prompt #274 where the given word is OPERA and the word count is 95.
§
I really tried, but with 95 words, and only five lines, and knowing little about opera, and adding more commas than I ought, I failed to write an acrostic poem. So…….
Otello, a resounding success but sixteen years in the writing.
Porgy and Bess, ten years to write, in English, and great success for one song in particular.
Eugene Onegin, a lyric opera, dramatic music, love, a duel, regret, what more is there?
Rigoletto, Verdi’s masterpiece, a randy hunchback and a nubile young lady.
Aida, the history of Egypt, sung over 1,100 times since 1886.
§
Beleaguered Servant’s poem today prompted this rapid rhyme. Thanks Owen!
§
He wrote a story in his head
It’s stuck between his ears
He now looks after great big lions
despite his mother’s fears
He’s oft conducting opera
inside his head at night
He sometimes keeps himself awake
or sleeps then wakes in fright
His parents named him Percy Snudge
a source of mirth at school
The boys would bully every day
the girls thought him a fool
Who’s laughing now? His great success
has brought him wealth and fame
Apart from lions and opera
his story made his name!
Helen’s theme this week is one that immediately set my music brain to The Sound of Music, but we are not going there! Oh no!
The theme is goodbye/farewell, and I can think of no better example to share with you than the absolutely divine, stupendous, moving music that is obviously enjoyed by not only the audience and the singers, but also by the whole orchestra. Played, and sung with the utmost feeling, it is “TIME TO SAY GOODBYE”
This piece of Operatic Pop has been hugely successful in many countries, used for sporting events, film scores, and, of course at concerts. It has been covered by numerous artists, and translated into many languages.
To appreciate this to its fullest extent you really need to sit down, get rid of all distractions, watch on a larger screen, and turn the sound UP.
Lyrics
Quando sono solo
Sogno all’orizzonte
E mancan le parole
Sì lo so che non c’è luce
In una stanza quando manca il sole
Se non ci sei tu con me, con me
Su le finestre
Mostra a tutti il mio cuore
Che hai acceso
Chiudi dentro me
La luce che
Hai incontrato per strada
Time to say goodbye
Paesi che non ho mai
Veduto e vissuto con te
Adesso si li vivrò
Con te partirò
Su navi per mari
Che, io lo so
No, no, non esistono più
It’s time to say goodbye
Quando sei lontana
Sogno all’orizzonte
E mancan le parole
E io sì, lo so
Che sei con me, con me
Tu mia luna, tu sei qui con me
Mio sole, tu sei qui con me
Con me, con me, con me
Time to say goodbye
Paesi che non ho mai
Veduto e vissuto con te
Adesso sì li vivrò
Con te partirò
Su navi per mari
Che io lo so
No, no, non esistono più
Con te io li rivivrò
Con te partirò
Su navi per mari
Che, io lo so
No, no, non esistono più
Con te io li rivivrò
Con te partirò
Io con te
