Gold!

A lot of what I write on WordPress is not available for general viewing as it is in the form of comments.

I have, for some time, kept a record of comments that I thought may be useful to share in future.  Points of view, random musings, some serious, others facile.  I have always thought it may be a useful source, and of interest to a wider audience.

I’ve been very quiet of late, for various reasons, but have always kept up my reading of, and commenting on, those blogs that I follow.

A comment today is, I think, rather important.  The post, one of a daily output from Carolyn at catsincambridge, prompted me to comment:

“Your posts always remind me of the fact that I, too, have been lucky in life to receive more than my share of good things.  One of these is the fact that I have shared the last 50 years of my life married to a very good woman who has put up with my many foibles, has followed me round the world during my army career, has given me a wonderful daughter and, together, we have built a wonderful home just as we dreamed.  Today is our anniversary.”

Thank you to my wonderful wife, Erica.

Lucy

Pianist Lucy Illingworth, 13, the winner of Channel 4 show The Piano, had viewers of the Coronation Concert in tears on 7 May. Lucy, who is blind and autistic, took to the stage to play Bach’s Prelude in C Major. You can see that HERE.

Below you can see her playing Arabesque No. 1 by Debussy. You may need to find a tissue!

Lucy attends Ravenscliffe School in Halifax. This is what they had to say about her performance:

Congratulations to Lucy, Sean, Danny and Jay on a spellbinding performance last night on the finale of Channel 4’s The Piano. We continue to be awestruck by Lucy’s ability, and the best part is that we hear her play every single day, which is an incredible honour. Her music is the soundtrack to everyday life at Ravenscliffe, and our entire community is so lucky to have her with us. Quite rightfully, her teacher Daniel Bath has been recognised for the patience and devotion he has shown to Lucy and her family for over a decade. Daniel is a hugely talented musician in his own right, and also founded Music for the Many, a charity which provides instrumental tuition and other musical opportunities on an equitable and inclusive basis, free of charge, to children and young people. To learn more about their work, or if you would like to support them, please visit their website (www.music4themany.com). We would like to also thank The Amber Trust, who have supported Lucy for many years. They are an incredible charity who give partially sighted and blind children the best possible chance to meet their musical needs and aspirations. If you would like to learn more about what they do, or feel able to make a donation to support them in their incredible work, please visit their website (www.theambertrust.org.uk). If, by any chance, you missed last night’s show (or just want to watch it again, and again, and again!) here is Lucy on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London. We are privileged to have played a small part in Lucy’s story so far, and we can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next. All rights and footage belong to Channel 4 Television Corporation.

The Lost Words Blessing – My Music

An occasional post of my music choices. No analysis, or explanation, maybe just a few words to say why!

§

I offer this song as a blessing to everyone for the Winter Solstice and to wish you all a happy, restful, and healthy Christmas and New Year. Thank you for all your wonderful posts, comments and friendship this year and always.

The Simple Things | Peter Matthews — Whispers and Echoes

“The Simple Things” was published today on Whispers and Echoes. A link to the original post is below.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. We haven’t quite adopted it in the UK, but it will not be long before we do! This is my humble attempt to explain just some of the things that I am thankful for.

I have also, for the first time ever, recorded this poem with a background track. Experimental it may be, but I am quite happy with the result. See what you think.

The Simple Things

The simple things of life delight

Children’s laughter, birds in flight

Grasses swaying in the breeze

Help to make my life of ease

§

The smell of new mown fields of hay

The rising sun at break of day

Autumn mists and wintry showers

Buzzing bees amongst the flowers

§

New made beds with smooth clean sheets

The smell of smoke from burning peats

Springtime bulbs just poking through

Summer evening’s barbeque

§

Horses, sheep, and cows a’mooing

Blushing youngsters all a’wooing

Older couples, hand in hand

Harvests from our fertile land

§

Wispy clouds just scudding by

Painting pictures in the sky

All these things and so much more

Help make the life that I adore

§

I count my blessings every day

And thank the Lord in every way

And when I go to bed at night

Considering all that is so right

The simple things of life delight.
