I saw this years ago - - late 80s or very early 90s. I believe it was a Canadian or English miniseries, about convicts from England who were sent to Australia. I remember it centering on 3 people: Mary(who was played by someone who looked like Sigrid Thornton or maybe Catherine Mary Stewart), Jon/Jonathan(long dark hair, illiterate), and Danny, who married/lived with a Maori woman. Jon and Mary both worked at the same place, and eventually fell in love. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It's been driving me crazy and I can't find it on IMDB or Google.
Thanks in advance!
ETA:
Found! By someone on one of my forums. It's Against the Wind, but I had a couple of things wrong - - it's from 1978, and it was Dinny, not Danny. It's based on the life of Mary Bryant, and there's another miniseries based on her life: Mary Bryant, from 2005, starring Jack Davenport and Alex O'Loughlin! How did I not know this? It's on my Netflix list now.
I won't be spoilery, but just say that the first ep of Torchwood season 2 is not to be missed. And oh, look, I still don't like Owen. I was very amused by Captain John's Adam Ant jacket.
I watched the second installment of Celebrity Rehab on VH1. Jeff Conaway is still a mess. Very sad. I continue to be impressed by Daniel Baldwin. Brigitte Nielsen, also. She's very... motherly to everyone. The rest haven't made much of an impression on me, except that Mary Carey is still vastly annoying.
As my beloved big sis Rifka reminded me, I *did* have something good happen this week. She surprised me with a lovely gift, something to add to my Betty Boop collection, and she made it with her own very talented hands:
And even though I bitch a lot, I know how very lucky I am, to have all of you, and J, and my family. As always, this is what I'm most thankful to have.
Robbie called last night. In the (hopefully)good news department, he's getting Brittany this weekend.
In the not-so-good news department, their dog, a Chihuahua, has been at the vet's all week, and they still don't know what's wrong with her. Robbie says her only symptoms are that she walks around in clockwise circles - - can't walk straight, tilting her head, and hadn't been eating. She's eating now. They did a CT scan, blood tests, x-rays, and nothing. I researched online and the likeliest thing I found was this:
Labyrinthitis
Labyrinthitis or dizziness characterizes diseases of the inner ear. The Labyrinth’s purpose is to maintain posture, balance, coordination, and to synchronize eye movements. A main cause of Labyrinthitis is inner ear infection. Other causes can be poisoning, drug intoxication, brain tumor, and head trauma.
Symptoms of Labyrinthitis
The symptoms of Labyrinthitis are lack of coordination and balance, abnormal posture, dizziness, staggering, head tilted toward affected side, rapid eye movement, and vomiting.
Except that she doesn't have the REM or vomiting. And she doesn't go outside. The vet said it wasn't inner ear trouble, or brain/head trauma. Also, when Chrisey went to get the dog, they told her two more dogs had come in with the same symptoms.
Anyone have any idea about this, or has this happened to anyone's dog before?
1. Leave me a comment saying something random, like the lyrics from your current favorite song, or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like. 2. I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better. 3. Update your journal with the answers to the questions. 4. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.
1. Are you more of a cat person or a dog person? A dog person. I had cats years ago, but for about 15 years, it's been all dogs. 2. What is one fandom that you are in but never thought you wind up in? Harry Potter. J loves to remind me that I had to be dragged to see the first movie - - we were taking his sister out for her birthday, and she got to choose the movie. I thought no way will I like this kids movie. Then I saw Alan Rickman as Snape... 3. What was your favorite toy when you were a kid? Oh, wow. I had a stuffed monkey I loved. Mom had to keep repairing it. It was with me for a long time. 4. If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Well, my real name is Randie, so I would choose Maddie to be my real name. I like it much better. 5. What is your favorite color? LOL - - pink, of course.
Instructions: Comment and I will name you 3 interests from your list, and 3 userpics and you explain them in your own post asking the same of your flisters.
Okay, so this is a meme you have to volunteer for, and I did. dustandroses chose my icons for me.
Here's the instructions:
1 - Comment and ask to be tagged! 2 - I will pick THREE of your keywords and/or user pics I find odd or nifty! 3 - You post, explaining in detail about the three I chose! 4 - People comment on your post!
jackiesjunkie, I know I already thanked you via e-mail, but I had to say thanks again for the post card with the beautiful flowers. *hugs*
And to psyfic and chazpure for the lovely card. Thank you both! I know what you mean about it not seeming like 5 years. J and I will be married 9 years on the 25th of this month, and it doesn't even seem like it's been half that. Times does indeed fly when you're having fun.
And mrs_sweetpeach, I can still *receive* e-mail from you, I just can't send any to you.
Still busy here, cleaning and rearranging. I had intended to spend today doing more of that. I've done the TV room(previously the living room), the living room(previously Mom's den), and was going to do the bedroom ad repaint some wood curtain rods white today. *After* I went to the post office to get a package for desert_rifka in the mail, finally. It's in the mail, Sis!
I had just gotten started on the package - - you know it takes a while, what with the bubble wrap and the wee bit of tape I use - - *g* - - and the phone rang. It was Regina, who was stuck in Baxley. The brakes had went out on the van, and could I come and take her home? I did, and came back home, after picking up some lunch. I got back to the package, so I could get it to the post office before I changed into some old clothes, had lunch and got on with the cleaning and painting. I managed to get the package done before the phone rang again. It was Regina, again, and this time Flint wanted me to come back out there, pick him up and take him to the van, so her could hopefully fix it and drive it home. So I did. He said the brakes seemed okay to him, but I followed him back home anyway.
I was pretty annoyed by the time I got back here, but I had goodies in the mail box. *Two* cards from desert_rifka, one containing a lovely magnet and something I'd never seen before - - a Betty Boop Arizona lottery scratch off ticket. I won $2! I also had a funny card from mrs_sweetpeach. Thanks to both of you, you cheered me back up.
But. My cousin Debra had called while I was out - - my uncle Billy, Mom's middle brother, died this morning. No funeral arrangements as yet. He was 66. He lived much longer than his doctors expected him to. He's had throat cancer, burned in a heater explosion, he had heart problems, he was diabetic, just got over a staph infection... He had just come back up here from Florida for Mom's funeral, and never went back.
Anyway, just a sort of mini-update. Love you all, but I am *never* going to get caught up on e-mail and LJ comments, but you all knew that, right?
ETA: My aunt just called and Debra and I both had it wrong. Billy *had* went back to Florida, just last week. He'll be cremated and there will be a service down there, then at a time yet to be determined, there will be a graveside service up here.
Just a quick post to thank everyone for the comments and posts. They helped a lot, seeing them at the end of a very long and tiring day. As did phone calls from betagoddess - - so great to finally talk to you, even if the reason sucked - - and desert_rifka.
The viewing/visitation will be tonight from 6 until 8, and the funeral will be tomorrow at 11am.
I just got off the phone with her. She said the first few days without her computer were okay, but now she's missing it. I can sympathize. I would be going through serious withdrawal.
She says hello to everyone, she misses you all, and it looks like the end of March before she'll be back online. She wants everyone to snail mail her. If you don't have her address, e-mail me.
And luci_2, either snail mail her, or e-mail your address to me. I'm sending her everyone's addresses that I have, as she had them all on her PC when it died.
I just finished reading Silver Wedding by Maeve Binchy, and the behavior of some of the characters got me thinking. A lot of the characters had this attitude of keeping all their personal stuff just within the family, not sharing with friends or even outside the immediate family. One character came upon a huge revelation after her Mom’s death, and was thinking she had no one to share it with, as she had no friends she felt close enough to to share the news.
I remember way back when my first fandom friends got LJs - - drkcherry and peach1250. I remember telling them how brave I though they were to do that, to share all this personal stuff with everyone, and that I didn’t think I would ever be able to do such a thing. Yeah, go ahead and laugh. Now you can’t shut me up, I tell *everything*! But it’s been a great comfort to me over the past few years, and especially right now.
You reply to this post and I give you a letter of the alphabet. Then you dredge up 10 songs that start with said letter and put them in your journal (with these or similar instructions).
1 - Angel of Mine by Monica 2 - Angel Eyes by Jeff Healy Band 3 - All I Need by Jack Wagner 4 - Against the Grain by Garth Brooks 5 - Animal by Def Leppard 6 - Against All Odds by Phil Collins 7 - Ain't Even Done With the Night by John Mellencamp 8 - Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer 9 - American Pie by Don McLean 10 - Almost Over You by Sheena Easton
Here's how the meme works: You leave me a comment saying "Interview Me!" or something similar and I'll reply back with five questions. You then take those questions and post them and the answers on your journal and let people then comment to you, etc., etc.
1. What was the first concert you ever saw?
Um, I've never been to a concert.
2. What is your favorite family tradition?
Probably the family dinners where everyone tells stories, like Mom telling the possum/Aunt Millie story.
3. What is you favorite thing to make (something you cook? sew? craft? etc.?)
Right now I'm making Christmas ornaments, sequined and beaded hearts. I used to do a lot of themed wreaths(grapevine and Christmas) and flower baskets. I also love making cards.
4. What was your favorite vacation?
Not big on vacations - - we used to go to the beach when I was younger, but I didn't much care for it. I'll say a vacation I *want* to take is a trip to the mountains.
5. What do you picture yourself doing 10 years from now?
Answer the questions (all of them or only those of them that you want to answer; or add some of your own). Be verbose -- your experiences are interesting! Tag three people whose fandom history you want to hear as told by them. Include rules and questions in your post.
