Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 16th – 22nd June 2025 – House Anniversary, Chart Hits 2001, Movie Themes, Book Reviews, Short Stories, Podcast, Watercress, Funnies

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a good week. Some lovely weather here and I have made good use of it in the garden… I intend to make the most of it.

We are celebrating being in our home for 9 years. It is now fully renovated with most of the necessary remedial work (it was a wreck) done in the first six months when surprisingly we managed with one bed, a table and chairs for our computers etc, 2 plates, 2 knives, 2 forks and 2 mugs… more or less. It was quite a shock to us when all our belongings and furniture arrived six months later. We got rid of about 50% right away and still have way too much.

Anyway, I can’t see us moving any time soon, especially as ‘he who must be obeyed’ has his local territory in the neighbourhood (I am talking about the cat and not my husband!).

The second year after we arrived and had cleared out all the old rotten trees and the overgrowth, I planted lilies in some pots and after a winter covered in a corner of the back garden they come up every year, last a couple of weeks only bringing such beauty with them… a reminder to make the most of every day as time can be fleeting.

Anyway… here are some updated photos of the house and garden…

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts that you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I have been back home since Tuesday night and getting back into the normal routine after my visit to my family in the UK. It was lovely to see Sonia, Diana and Jeremy and his partner Barbara, they rolled out the red carpet and dined me royally. I also managed to catch up with one of my best friends Adrian and his lovely wife Chris.. Both my sisters have pooches… Tess and Butch and they made sure I was given plenty of cuddles and kisses too.  A lovely visit and hope to head over again next summer.

BERJAYA

My two sisters Sonia and Diana and my brother Jeremy who with his partner Barbara had brought Chinese takeway… delicious

BERJAYA

Dressed up for another night on the town… with Butch in close attendance…..

The trip was reasonably plain sailiing…on the ferries at least. I have to say the 400 kilometre drive from Fishguard to Portsmouth took longer than it used to at nearly 6 hours due to the roadworks that littered the motorway and A-roads reducing the speed considerably. Also the traffic density is incredible and certainly reminded me how peaceful in contrast our motorways are out of the city limits.

Thankfully David and uploaded the latest navigator to my phone and ‘she who must be obeyed‘ even took me off road at one point as we were about to hit a major roadworks with long delays expected. To be honest I though ‘she’ had gone a bit doolally, but decided to trust her. We ended up on country lanes with few signposts and I began to get a little concerned after about 5 miles and was about to turn around when we got to a roundabout with a signpost for an on ramp to the M3 to Southampton. This cut out the roadworks and delays completely and I lost no time at all from there to my home in Portsmouth.

So whilst there might be concerns about AI…. sometimes it does know best lol.

To break the journey on the way home, I stayed the night in a very nice hotel a few miles from the ferry terminal so was relaxed for the boat trip over the Irish Sea, which can be unpredictable at times. Over the last 43 years we have had some very rough crossings but this time it was smooth sailing. I did take some photos of the sky which show how changeable it can be in that particularly volatile stretch of water. We sailed through a couple of rain squalls and in one picture you can see blue skies, storm clouds and a squall hitting the sea in the distance.

The first shows how calm it was in Fishguard harbour before we boarded the ferry but with gathering storm clouds over Wales.

BERJAYA

Slightly choppy seas and a squall off to the right as the sun began to set…

BERJAYA

Anyway back home to an equally warm welcome… the cat was on the front doorstep and interrogated me on where I had been, with whom and what had I brought her… David was just happy to see me lol…

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog…this week with my break I have given you the link to their own blogs for you to check out their posts.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 24th – 30th July 2023 – Garden flowers, Big Band Era, Authenticity, Podcast, IBS, Recipes, Reviews and Funnies

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope that you have enjoyed your week. I know that some of you are experiencing unseasonally cold weather for your summers and a lot more rain than expected.. whilst some are suffering horrendous wildfires and extreme heat. There seems to be no happy medium at the moment and I only hope that next week will improve whatever your situation.

On the home front.

My late spring flowers were passed their best so I have saved the bulbs for next spring and made a visit to our local garden centre to buy some bird seed and take advantage of their sale. I spent this morning tidying pots and adding the new plants and here they are… the larger flowers are Dahila Maxi and the smaller ones are Dianthus Car Oscar…  I will need to change a few more out over the next few weeks and will get a few more of these in different colours. They should see me through the rest of the summer especially as the roses are budding up again.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope your week has gone well we seem to have fallen foul of the curse of St. Swithin’s on July 15th when it poured all day and it has rained everyday since. Looking at the forecast for the next ten days that trend will continue in varying degrees with brief gaps… since if it rains on St. Swithin’s it will do so for 40 days… that means it will be 21st if August before summer returns… I will keep you updated.

However, in the garden everything is blooming, including the ‘wilded’ areas that David sowed with packets of a variety of wild flower seeds in the spring. Mainly in the back garden, and as I work or sit out there it is clear that the insects, including some wonderfully noisy bumble bees have been enjoying these small areas of natural planting. We also have a patch in the front outside our office window, which even on rainy days adds some colour.

BERJAYA BERJAYA

The hydrangeas have also now come into full bloom and year after year they never disappoint… this year I have left the so called weeds that have also taken root in the pots as to be honest they have lovely flowers and attract the insects as much as the Hydrangeas do.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 19th – 25th June 2023 – Flowers, Big Bands, Gene Kelly, ABBA, Podcast, Health, Book Reviews, Summer Book Fair and Funnies

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope your week has gone well so far. We had a continuation of our lovely sunny weather until a couple of days ago but then the skies opened.. no complaints however as the lawn and the rest of the garden badly needed a good soaking.

Nothing much to report on the home front as it will be another four weeks before our solar panels are installed but we are enjoying a brief respite and time to get out and see family and explore some more areas close to home.

Having planted all new pots in the front of the house I decided to pick up some small seedlings from the local supermarket to put in the back garden. Since not on public view it didn’t matter how long they took to flower. These small green plants with some TLC and some sunshine have provided us with a wonderful show all for the bargain price of 10 Euros…Just goes to show you don’t have to spend a fortune to create a colourful display in your garden.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

Hope you have had a good week and are enjoying a relaxing weekend. Not a great deal to report on the home front this week but we have decided to go ahead and have solar panels installed with an estimated date of end of July. We have waited until the technology on both solar panels and the battery capacity has improved so that even in our overcast climate there will still be a benefit from having them. Not only a reduction in our electricity bills but also if we are going to put the house on the market, anyone coming in will be ahead of many in the area in having them installed, so hopefully a good selling point.

We have had some much needed rain in the last two days and the garden, especially the lawn has greened up again after almost 5 weeks without any. Back to some sunshine this week and looking forward to taking full advantage in the garden and walking.

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog…

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope your week has gone well. There has been glorious sunshine here and knowing how unpredicable our summers can be, we have been making the most of it. The fledgling starlings having stuffed themselves at the Birdseed Cafe and Spa, are now disappearing for most of the day, just popping in for a bath and a drink. With nearly 10 days without rain there is little standing water around and so our two baths have to be filled at least three times a day to keep up with demand. When I sit outside they ignore me and it is quite the sight watching their antics.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have all had a good week and have enjoyed some of the sunnier weather we have. While David began to dismantle the kitchen to speed up the process of the installation of the new one this week, I sat in the garden and caught up with reading, music and sunshine… It certainly makes a difference. One of the neighbour’s cats came and kept me company all afternoon sitting in the shade of my chair and occasional commenting on the birds and the state of the world.

Here are some ‘before’ photos of the kitchen and hopefully next week you will get the ‘after’ ones!  All these units are being taken out and so it will take a two or three days to get the job done…Our office is in the diner part of the kitchen so we will be covering everything with sheets and decamping into the dining room. I will be offline during the day but will be checking in first thing and in the evening.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – May 1st – 7th 2023 – The Coronation, Family Photographs, Big Band Era, Guest Columns, Podcast, Book Reviews and Funnies

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a good week. We have enjoyed some sunshine but also some high winds which meant our blossom was short lived…

I am watching the Coronation in bursts on YouTube over the next couple of days. We don’t have television and only watch downloaded shows and films from Netflix or other streaming sites. I get my news from the various international papers I follow on a regular basis and to be honest I find that means I manage how much bad news I am exposed to on a daily basis.

Anyway back to the Coronation and currently the BBC coverage I am watching has racked up 4.4 million views since yesterday. I would imagine that would be mainly international by those who don’t have access to UK TV.   If you would like to watch the short highlights you can find them here Coronation Highlights the full length 7hrs 30 min BBC Coverage is Here.

Personally I am all for a monarchy as I feel it is a permanent and consistent reminder of our heritage and history which our revolving governments cannot provide. I know there are critics and certainly some members are not as contributory to the role as they might be and take advantage of their position. But, seeing the outpouring of support and joy at the processions and the events taking place, it is a much needed celebration after Covid and the loss of Her Majesty the Queen.

On the home front I have been working though probably a thousand or more photographs, cataloguing and filing so I know what we have. Some of the photos go back over 100 years and also includes a photo of one of my great-grandmothers on my mother’s side. Wonderful to revisit the family photos taken on our times overseas with my father but also our own travels in the last 43 years. Definitely a walk down memory lane and some possible inspirations for short stories in the future.

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog…

Carol Taylor will be here on Wednesday with her A-Z of food and the letter ‘W’. Also food waste and how to make tasty chips using potato peelings in an air fryer. Also a wonderful recipe for Spicy red curry, Pork, Rice and Coconut Balls using up your cold cooked rice and an interesting use of egg shells and bananas to help your garden grow. In Thursday Thoughts the fascinating story of Lady Dai… a mummy who is in excellent condition despite her age and who might have been embalmed with a combination of ingredients that clearly have magical properties. I hope you have had a great week and for us Spring has definitely arrived. Three lovely days which enabled me to get on with the planting and also saw our trees showcase their blossom. Looks like a new kitchen is almost built and we should have it installed in the next couple of weeks. I am finishing off the packing of ‘clutter’ and crockery etc that we won’t be using in the short term and 30 boxes + 15 boxes of books are waiting to be put into temporary storage when the house goes on the market.

Here are a few photos of the before and after planting this week.

Also a couple of shots of the crows peanut gathering activities.

One crow will pick up the string holding the peanut holder and shake vigorously until small bits of peanut or even sometimes a whole peanut falls onto the grass. He then hops down and eats. However, his mates start hanging around underneath and he has to be quick to take advantage. Somedays it is better than Netflix watching them work out how to steal food.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 10th – 16th April 2023 – Letters from America update, Out and About, Big Band Era, Natalie Cole, ‘U’ Foods, Podcast, The Skin, Book Reviews and Funnies

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope the week has gone well for you and thanks for dropping in today and for all the visits and comments during the week. I love putting the blog together and your support is definitely the icing on the cake.

All the cupboards are cleared in the kitchen except for what we need on a daily basis and some extra cups for coffee and tea for the crew coming in soon to put the new units in.

BERJAYA

Our office is in the diner part of the kitchen so I will decamp to the dining room where I plan to sort through all the hundreds of photos we took in America during our two years living in Houston and travelling all around the country. I have decided to publish my letters that I sent home every week and the articles I wrote about specific places we visited in a book later in the year.

There are a number of reasons for this, one being that the blog posts seemed to have been enjoyed, but also I wanted to celebrate the people we met and the wonderful and diverse regions of this incredible country. It was a different time when things seemed to be a lot simpler and there is no doubt that there are issues today, as in every country that focus the attention of the media negatively. But beneath all that negativity, are the people and the amazing geographical features that remain unchanged.

I know when I go through the box of photos that it will stir up many happy memories of our time there, which I hope will be conveyed through the letters written 28 years ago.

I was delighted to wake up this morning to a wonderful feature and review for Variety is the Spice of Life on the blog Carla Loves to Read. You will find great reviews for adult and children’s books and special features for those who love to read.

Image

About Carla

I have been a reader all my life, but recently began reading and reviewing books on Goodreads. Shortly after that, I was introduced to Netgalley and have been reviewing new books on a regular basis. I wanted somewhere to review books where people could come and look at them as well as see them somewhat categorized.

As a retired elementary school principal/teacher/teacher-librarian, children’s literature is very important to me. I love seeing our young people read, as well as parents reading to them. I have been reading a lot of Children’s books from toddlers to Young Adult as well as picture books. There are also a couple of Christian series geared to young readers (age 7 – 11) which I have reveiwed.

You can click on the links above to take you to the pages that contain reviews for specific genres of books. You can follow Carla on Twitter

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts that you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

I hope you are all doing well and have enjoyed your week…

A red letter day this week. The sun came out yesterday afternoon, the wind dropped and I was able to sit out in the back garden for nearly an hour. It looks like I will be able to do the same this morning in the front garden. It is amazing how just sitting quietly with the sun on your face next to the bird feeder and bright yellow daffodils makes everything right with the world. Well your small part of it anyway.  I know just how these cows feel after being shut up for the winter months lol.

I was out and about during the week included in a lovely post by Jane Sturgeon along with Harmony Kent, Alex Craigie, D.G. Kaye and Lauren Scott. BERJAYA

Welcome to a round up of posts you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

It has been a mixed week weather wise here with high winds, some sunshine and flurries of snow. We have got off lightly looking at the headlines from around the world, and even in the UK less than 100 miles away at the nearest point, there has been very heavy snow and disruption.

We are getting ready to have our kitchen renovations done so we will be moving our computers back into the dining room for a while. It will be good to get that job done. Looking at the empty pots in the garden I am also looking forward to better weather at the end of the month to visit the garden centre to get the new plants and get the outside looking more colourful.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – 12th – 18th December 2022 – Ice skating, International Carols, Old Souls, Podcast, Book reviews, Christmas Guest posts, Funnies

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord you might have missed this week.

I hope your week has gone well and I am sure you are busy with your holiday preparations. We have gone from white, frosty and Christmasy to gale force winds and driving rain overnight. I am not complaining as I will take a wet road over an icy one any day.

Although a few weeks away I am making preparations for my 70th, not a party but to renew my driving licence which is the age we have to do it here. It used to be you had to produce a medical certificate at 70 but they have just moved to 75 which is one step out of the renewal. To renew online however I have to go to a local office tomorrow with all my IDs and prove my identity, which gives me a card which enables me to avoid going 20 miles to the nearest licence office. I also get a free travel card when I am 70 which I can use on any public transport including all buses and trains. So whilst there may be a few more cracks in my face than last year, there are definitely benefits of turning 70.

I will however forgo any invitation to compete in Dancing on Ice as yesterday proved that I might not have the aptitude I used to have on roller skates. I went out to pour warm water in the bird bath, and next thing I knew I was flat on my back, having slipped on the ice that had accumulated around the bird bath during their ablutions. I was wet through from the bucket of water I was still carrying, and startled crows circled me calling out in distress. I assume it was concern that the human who spends copious amounts of money and time feeding the garden birds, and the crows when they can get at it, was lying injured on the ground. I suspect however it was excitement at the sight of the largest piece of road kill they had ever seen… possibly an early Christmas gift!

Anyway, I broke my fall with my wrist and apart from various bruises from top to tail I have escaped with another lesson learnt. Throw the water in the bird bath from a distance when the hose is frozen.

This week I will be sharing the final Christmas book fairs including new book news for John Howell and Dan Antion, there will be festive music, videos and funnies with a couple of short stories, book review and the round up over the holiday weekend.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up November 28th – December 4th 2022 – #Christmas Posts, Hits 1950s, Tony Bennett, Astral Projection, Podcast, Reviews, Christmas Book Fair, Humour

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord..

I hope that you have all had a good week… I know that some of you have had heavy falls of snow and whilst I am sure it looks beautiful I am sure it also brings its challenges. We are expecting a cold snap next week with a possibility of snow but it rarely comes to anything and if it does snow rarely stays more than a day or two. Let’s hope that is not ‘famous’ last words.

BERJAYABERJAYA

I have been busy finishing off the Christmas Book Fair and scheduling more Christmas Archive posts. There is some space after Christmas in the first couple of weeks of January if you have a post from that time period from previous years that you would like to share. Perhaps about New Year Resolutions… a short story, poem etc.  Send the link to sally.cronin@moyhill.com and I will take it from there.

BERJAYA

I received my wrap up stats from Anchor this week where I record my podcast and it is streamed on 6 other platforms… I then upload the recording to Soundcloud which I then link to the blog. When the current poetry and flash fiction series is finished after Christmas I am going to adding a new feature to the Book Promotions. I will record the blurb’s for new books I add to the bookshelf along with the links to buy and the author’s website. I will use the book cover as the featured image and I hope that combined with the actual new book post it will reach a new audience.

As the soundcloud recording comes with an embed link the author can then use on their own blog if they wish to promote their book.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a great week. I know that some of you in Florida and adjacent states have been in the path of the latest hurricane and that caused extensive damage along the coast. Hopefully you have not suffered too much damage and that there is some respite from the weather fronts. We have had extremely high winds and torrential rain this week but we are lucky to only get the tail ends of the big storms across the Atlantic here on the East Coast, whilst those in the West of Ireland get the brunt of them.

The annual remembrance services have been held this week in the UK on November 11th and today with Rembembrance Sunday. Around the world veterans and those who did not return are remembered at different times of the year. My post this year is a tribute to an extraordinary marine who I was honoured to interview a few years ago. His story and those of the many thousands of wounded servicemen and women is one that needs to be told and thankfully there are some amazing charities who support them as they face the challenges of returning home with life changing injuries of the body and mind.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts from the week that you might have missed on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a good week so far although I do find it hard to believe we are in November already. I don’t know where this year has gone but it seems to have flown by. Still I guess it is true, time flies when you are having fun!

We have had three heavy storms come across us in the last week and on one day 90 mph gusts. No major damage but we did lose our metal birdseed tree which was a favourite with the garden visitors as it snapped in two as it feel on to the patio. Thankfully the bird feed pyramid that David built on the stump of an old tree survived and at least our resident birds managed to get some food in the gaps in the weather. In a complete contrast there will be a couple of days in this next week with warm temperatures and sunshine.

My next book is finished and is now going to be polished and my tapestry is completed and will go to be stretched and framed. I have been enjoy my two hours every afternoon getting back into the needlework groove so I have ordered a new piece which should arrive this week. It is a big canvas and will keep me busy for a few months.

Welcome to the round up of post you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have all had a good week…It has been a wild few days here with a long winded thunder storm that raged for several hours followed by torrential rain and high winds. October making its presence felt. Hopefully it will settle down this week and we might get a little sunshine. It would be good if this also applied to the turmoil currently going on around us.

On the home front… we have decided to replace the doors in the kitchen to update and because after the redecoration of the rest of the house, it has made the current doors look shabby. With out decision to put the house on the market next spring we might as well make good use of the time to make the house as appealing as possible.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

Autumn and rushed in this week with gales, storms and plenty of rain. The grass is back to its vibrant green although the trees look very bare. It is however always good to remember that in the spring they will be back to their glory again with even more blossom.

I have been spending the afternoons with tapestry and music exploring my older playlists with music that I don’t get to listen to as often as I would like. I am making good progres with my elephant and her calf and now I have a special pair of glasses that go over my own to increase magnification I am finding it a lot easier. Not to mention I am not missing quite so many stitches.

I am also making good progress on my latest collection and hope to get that on the shelves by the end of November… I have finally settled on a title along the theme of ‘Life’ as for the other recent collections and it was hiding in plain site as you will see!

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord..

I hope your week has gone well. Nothing much to report here but I have managed to get a few hours in the garden as we experience some random Indian Summer moments. I have also made progress with my Elephant tapestry as my intention is to have it finished and framed ready by Christmas. My next book release, a combined poetry and short story collection is also getting closer to being ready for editing.

I have also been giving some thought to how the blog might evolve in the next year and some new features I would like to introduce. As you will see from this week there has been an emphasis on new releases and book reviews and I do want to carry that forward next year with additional opportunities for authors to promote their work.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed during the week here on Smorgasbord.

I know this week has been very difficult for many of you living in the US and in the path of the hurricane weather. I do hope that you are safe and that you didn’t suffer any damage to your homes. You have been in our thoughts.

Nothing much to report on the home front as we carry on getting the small jobs in the house completed and get the garden ready for the autumn. We are keeping an eye on the house selling market and if necessary we may hold off until the spring. Once you get into November and Christmas (sorry to use that word so early) house sales do tail off. We are not in a rush and may well wait until spring when it picks up again. However, at least we will be ready should the opportunity present itself and we will keep an open mind.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope the week going well so far for you. Nothing much to report on the home front as we continue to do our tidy up to sell.. it is the small fiddly jobs that seem to take the longest.

I continue with the online shopping for both location and properties that tick the boxes for what we hope is our last move. Whilst we are still hale and hearty, there may come a time in years ahead when we cannot drive and whilst we love being in a more rural environment, if there is no public transport close to hand it makes life a little more difficult. Also we are 40 minutes away from the nearest emergency department. Touch wood that has not been an issue and we do have a very good out of hours clinic. But I do think there would be some comfort in knowing you are not too far from emergency help should you need it.

Of course as the media is keen to point out in the UK, the wait for an ambulance in some areas is the issue not the distance. Being close to an ER certainly offers some options in many circumstances with taxis being one of them.

If you have to give up your car it is also good to have a decent size supermarket close by and again you can get taxis and to be honest with the cost of insurance, petrol, servicing and other car expenses you can get an awful lot of taxis in a year for a lot less.

Anyway, I have expanded our search to along the south coast of Ireland but we are not dismissing a return to the UK.

Stay tuned lol for the adventures to come.

As always my thanks to my friends who take time to share their expertise with us….

Welcome to the round up of post this week you might have missed on Smorgasbord.

I hope that you have had a good week.  I know some of you are on holiday either at home or abroad and enjoying different surroundings. Hopefully not too long in the airport and reunited with your luggage. The UK is definitely in a mess in that regard and the strikes don’t help. Whilst it certainly gets the attention of the media, it seems that the only people who suffer are those ordinary citizens trying to get to work or take their families on well earned breaks. I am all for fair wages for a days work, but when a train driver is earning almost three times more than a nurse and considerably more than a fireman, it does seem a little aggresive. Whilst the leadership of the UK is in flux I suppose it is seen as an opportunity to cause as much chaos as possible.

On the home front, rain has caused a stoppage of work for the main contractor. To be honest he has painted three quarters of the outside of the house including all the window surrounds and corner stones in white and it looks amazing. I am quite happy that he has to take a break from climbing ladders after 12 days solid. There are some inside jobs that need attention so you can rest assured he won’t be wasting any time!

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

I hope those of you who were suffering from the heat wave and added risks of wildfires are now finding things much cooler. We are back to our seasonal temperatures and have had some welcome rain the last couple of days which is good news for the farmers. They have worked overtime in the last two weeks to get their fields mown and baled but they need a new growth now for stock for the rest of the summer.

The outside of the house is looking great with its new coat of grey and white paint with just the back of the house needing another coat.

I am spending August on some work related projects for the autumn.. a new short story collection, poetry collection and for early next year an updated and Ebook version of my family health manual Just Food For Health, which at 360 pages in the print version is going to take a bit of time.  I have stocked the blog and whilst not around quite as much on social media business will carry on as usual.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

It seems that summer is here with a vengeance and for some on the continent it has brought the dreaded wildfires that put not just people but wildlife at great risk. We count our blessings that we have cloud cover much of the time and we are unlikely to get over 24 degrees. With onshore breezes it does help to keep the heat down. Those of us of a certain age still remember the summer of 1976 when the heatwave went on for several weeks. It looks like this one will be shorter lived and hopefully for those experiencing the severe temperatures and risk of fires will get rain soon.

Work on the house continues and the outside walls are getting the attention at the moment and another couple of weeks and it will be time to look at each room and arrange and dress ready for inspection. I am looking at property sites at the moment in the area that we would like to move to on the south coast and one house I was checking out was dressed immaculately throughout. Clearly the estate agent thought that two very large multi packs of toilet rolls set off the master bedroom ensuite perfectly or perhaps thought they might be a selling point!

Anyway… keep cool and safe.

On the blog front…

I hope that you are all well and have had a good week. Nothing much to report here as we continue with the revamp of the house to put on the market.. still a couple of months away but I am spending time looking online at properties in the area we are considering. BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts that you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you are well and have enjoyed your week as much as I have mine. The house is still a bit topsy turvey but the new dining room just needs a bit more work, and I am off to buy curtains tomorrow. We will be moving the furniture in there over next weekend and then spending a couple of days putting our office back together in the kitchen diner.

The last of the spring flowers need to be moved into one of the flower beds for next year and I will be heading to the garden centre for the more mature summer plants.

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord that you might have missed during the week…

I hope you have had a good week and thanks for dropping in here today for the catch up. On the home front decorating has gone well with David finishing the utility room which now looks very bright and cheerful with bright yellow walls and glossy white woodwork…next job is our joint office and I will be decamping to the dining room for a couple of weeks with my desktop so there will be no break in service (hopefully).

Outside I managed to get half the pot planting done before high winds blew in and delayed the other half until tomorrow. Still it is beginning to look bright and cheerful out there too.

I did capture the blossom on the tree that has appeared this week before it gets blown away…

Lots to be grateful for, including these three amazing contributors.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – March 28th – April 3rd 2022 – Oscars, Chart Hits 1991, Cruising, B12, Book reviews, Podcast, Humour

BERJAYA

Welcome to the round up of posts from the week that you might have missed on Smorgasbord.

I hope everyone is doing well. There seems to be little change in the main headlines in the last week, apart from celebrities behaving badly which considering all that is going on in the world seems very ill advised.

I love movies and I used to look forward to the Oscars and would stay up late to watch the whole red carpet and award ceremony. The last few years however, it seems to have become a traversty of its origins, which were to honour those within the industry for their excellence.

Although I have to say that many of the fashion designers seem to be getting their own back for previous slights or insults from certain celebrities and dressing them in some appalling outfits, and no doubt charging a fortune for them.

I also think the $140,000 gift bags sent to 28 of the top nominees for Oscars did not send the right message any year let alone this one – The Academy does not send the gift bags but since it has become a tradition, they seem to condone it.

If you would like to know what the selected nominees received here is a list courtesy of CNBC.com

The most expensive item in this year’s bag is a $50,000 three-night stay at Turin Castle in Scotland, inspired by Denzel Washington’s “Best Actor” nomination for “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” Guests who accept the offer will have full access to the 17th century castle, complete with butler service and a bagpiper welcome when they arrive.

The bags also include 52 other items and experiences. Here are a few highlights:

  • A $12,000 “Celebrity Arms” liposuction procedure from cosmetic surgeon Dr. Thomas Su
  • The title of “Lord” or “Lady of Glencoe,” along with a small plot of land in Scotland
  • $25,000 worth of home renovations from Los Angeles-based Maison Construction
  • An assortment of “flavor wrapped” popcorn packages from Opopop
  • Up to $10,000 worth of “treatments and rejuvenation procedures” from Dr. Konstantin Vasyukevich
  • A $15,000 four-night stay for two at the Golden Door luxury resort and spa in Escondico, Calif.
  • A small batch tea gift set from Oprah-approved The Chai Box
  • A $1,200 life coaching session with wellness expert Kayote Joseph

Clearly many of the celebrities will not be availing themselves of all the gift items but the total worth is almost $4 million. Having said that some of the gifts require a high tolerance to pain! Perhaps some of the recipients might auction their gift bags off for a good cause!

There is a sting in the tail as those who do accept and use the gifts will have a price to pay as they are liable for tax…

Anyway… enough griping…
