XF I Want to Believe

TV! Teacher, mother, secret lover...

With the Fall TV season upon us already, I've been mapping out my plan of attack for all the new shows I'm interested in. Of course, there are some shows I won't even bother to try simply based on the premise, and I don't watch reality (unless it's reality reality, like A&E's The First 48). I added everything into my handy desktop calendar to keep track.

I watched Sarah Michelle Gellar's new series Ringer last night, and it definitely has promise. The pilot kept me interested the entire time, and if they don't drag out too many mysteries every week and keep revealing stuff to move the plot along, I'll stick with it.

Tonight there's a preview of Christina Applegate and Will Arnett's new comedy, Up All Night at 10 p.m. on NBC. It moves into its regular Wednesday at 8 p.m. spot on September 21. Okay, it's a comedy about having kids, which I don't, but I like both of them so I'll try it. Why can't someone make a comedy about an out-of-work TV lover with a cat and an obsession with genre TV?

Tomorrow Archer returns to FX for only three weeks (WTF?) at 10 p.m. Pam (see icon) is my hero.

I'm sure everyone on Tumblr (I say this because every time I'm linked to something on Tumblr, inevitably I see "Hi I'm so-and-so and I'm 16 SQUEE!") is going to be watching Kevin Williamson's new teenage witchcraft drama, The Secret Circle, premiering tomorrow at 9 after his other teen vampire lovefest, Vampire Diaries. I tried watching VD from the beginning, and I simply can't get into it. I watched like five episodes and it never improved. Based on the preview, I see that Gale Harold will be playing a significant role in The Secret Circle. FYI Gale lovers.

Next week is when a lot of the new stuff premieres, so I'll make a separate post as those shows come on. And this weekend is the Emmys, which I might be interested to see, if only because I hope Justified's Margo Martindale wins. She's popping up on CBS's A Gifted Man on September 23 at 8 p.m. It looks like shit but I'll try the pilot to see her.

Here's the awesome grid from The Futon Critic.com which allows you see what's coming up. The reason I like this grid is because it gives you both broadcast and cable premieres.

More on TV next week.

Joyce Summers is alive!!!

Why, she didn't die in one of the most awesome episodes of television ever entitled "The Body" on the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer! She's moved on.

And by that I mean to say that actress Kristine Sutherland has popped up in this commercial for Healthy Choice frozen dinners and I recorded it, LOL.

Question of the night

I'm watching the totally bitchin' Buffy episode right now where Angelus breaks Ms. Calendar's neck (heh, I'm mean) and I was trying to explain to my GF how Angel lost his soul and became Angelus, and she asks,

"Does evil Angel have a fu manchu so you can tell him apart from good Angel?"

LOL, Star Trek has the answer to all of life's mysteries!

But ETA Poor Giles! That moment where the music crescendos and he drops the glass -- perfection.

Simpsons - King Size Homer

Lonely Rhyme is lonely!

How is everybody? It seems quiet around here lately. Is everyone busy at their jobs and crap? LOL. I'm no closer to finding one yet. I don't mind; it's so effing hot I don't even want to leave the house. I would gladly live in Minnesota or Alaska or Canada in winter because I HATE summer. I welcome cold.

I've been busy cooking and keeping things clean and being a housewife to my GF, which I don't particularly mind at all! Then I tap out some words on my Dean/Cas Big Bang, in the midst of which I'd love to write "And then they fuck. I guess. The End."

Tonight: Mad Men came back! (No spoilers) I hope this season is a little more quickly paced than last season, which draaaaaaagged and there was too much Betty. UGH, I hate Betty. One of these days Sally is going to try to murder her in her sleep, I swear, which would be delicious. I love Sally. Roger Sterling is still the shit. I love him too.

Also: True Blood. I never watched the previous two seasons, because I didn't have HBO and because from the clips I've seen it was way too campy for my tastes. But since there's nothing else on and I got free HBO when I got FiOS at my GF's place, I've been taping it to keep up. I already pretty much know who everyone is based on osmosis and reading TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly.

I've seen exactly four episodes now, and I really love Russell, the vampire king. He's snarky, and legitimately scary despite him not seeming so. Why is Bill the only vampire who talks like he's composing lyric poems in his head before he speaks? I fast forward through Jason's scenes because that's one of the soap opera plots I don't care about, and the same with Sam. But I do like the waitress Arlene. I watch her scenes. I know everyone loves Lafayette and all, but I'll wait until they give him something to do. He's boring to me. Sorry!

Good Lord there is a lot of chewing and gnawing on things on this show. EW. Lots of bloody chunks of stuff, too. I can only imagine how much scarier Buffy and Angel might have been with a little more gore. Can you imagine Angelus gnawing hunks off of Jenny Calendar's neck? That would rock. I always thought she was . There, I said it!

As for tonight (don't worry, no spoilers) I see what Eric is doing there, and I look forward to more. Feel free to discuss in the comments.

Buffy's "The Body"

"The Body" episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which Buffy's mother dies, was shown tonight on Logo. I haven't seen it since it first aired in February of 2001, yet I can still clearly remember specific moments that affected me: Buffy saying "Mommy"; her throwing up on the carpet; the way the camera focuses on only half of the paramedic's face; the way all the kids in school watch Dawn when she hears; poor Anya's inability to understand what's going on.

Less than a month after this episode aired, my own mother went into cardiac arrest as we were sitting in the ER of the hospital, waiting on an x-ray for what we thought was a chest cold. A stent which failed and then emergency open-heart surgery for a double bypass followed. She lived. Today she's strong and healthy and enjoying her grandkids.

It's funny what I remember about that day, too: it was the first day of Spring in 2001 and it was warm, so I was wearing the butchiest shirt ever -- a bowling-style button down with flames and dragons on it; the nurse stroking my hair and telling me, "She's pinking up" after they used the defibrillator three times; my brother screeching to a halt in his car in front of the ER; my father asking me "How bad is it?" when he finally got to the hospital.

"The Body" is such a powerful episode, and also an emotional one. I'm glad to be able to see it again after all this time.

Buffay!

I'm watching the episode of Buffy's fourth season in which Oz comes back right now on Logo. It's also Willow's "coming out" to Buffy episode.

I didn't watch Buffy from the beginning; it was a little too high school for me and I was down with Mulder and Scully at the time. I actually started watching it in Season 4 just for the Willow/Tara, and then I went back to catch up, along with Angel. Willow/Tara! *siiiiigh*

Long story short, OH WOW looking at it now I never realized HOW AWFUL THE INITIATIVE IS. Like, realllly bad writing bad. What the heck were they thinking? How did I not give up on the craptacularness? Probably because of the aforementioned Willow/Tara and SPIKE, who ironically is neutered this season. It's like the worst season of Buffy to come in on. Yeesh.

Oh, and also, the whole werewolf suit thing is hilariously cheesy. Like, Oz has a tail!!!

Also also, after watching the final scene of this ep (oh, my heart...I'm teary just watching it) did Willow ever get a happy life after Season 7? Aren't there comic books continuing the Buffy saga? Did she end up with Kennedy (which: meh)? I don't know why this concerns me so much. Even when she went bad I cheered for her (like Sammy I guess). She was one of my favorite characters.
