glinda: thunder rolled...it rolled a six (weather)
[personal profile] glinda
Last week, when I'd ventured to B&Q on my - pleasant by grey - day off for some odds and ends, I stopped off at Aldi on the way home and picked up some icepoles that were on special for a ridiculously good deal. Probably because they reckon that's us had our summer for this year, was my thought but as they're essentially fruit flavoured water I figured they were unlikely to go off before it was hot enough for me to appreciate them again. I have really appreciated them today. (On Friday it was chilly enough that I was wearing a jumper dress and leggings as my WFH outfit, today it involved shorts.) The weather is at the top end of what I can comfortably deal with - there was a breeze so it was comfortable rather than oppressive - so I was mostly weirded out by the fact that having put together a picnic tea I was able to not only happily eat it outdoors, but that I had to come back inside cos I was too hot and needed another cold drink at 6 o'clock - it was full sunshine mid-day sun heat, not even beginning to cool down. (I don't have my own garden, but the complex I live in is build in the grounds of an old hospital, and the infirmary building is now offices a lawn and some art that apparently is a community garden so ripe for picnicing.) There's still a breeze now, but it's taken to nearly until 10pm to cool down enough that I felt that another layer was necessary outdoors. It never actually gets dark here at this time of year so that's definitely adding an extra layer of surrealness to the proceedings.

In other news, I actually have words to report! I picked up a last minute pinch-hit for [community profile] femslash_kink - which has now been revealled so I can share it! - and it worked out really well, having the deadline not only got some fic written, but while procrastinating from writing the fic I managed to knock out a piece for my film blog as well! It's actually turned out to be a really good month for writing. Over 5000 words in a month for the first time this year. (I practically doubled by total for the year!) And that's just finished words - I also picked away at a bunch of other things both fic and non-fiction. It would be nice if I could finish one of them before the end of the month, but I doubt it so it's probably safe enough to claim a total for June of 5074 words.

"Smell is the most powerful memory trigger there is. A certain flower or a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten. Books smell - musty and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer has no texture, no context. It's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then the getting of knowledge should be tangible. It should be smelly."

Creativity is... viewing the world from a different angle. Taking things from everyday life that otherwise might seem mundane and go un-noticed, and turning them into something beautiful. Finding beauty where there seems to be none and changing the perceptions of others so they can see that beauty too. Making something out of seemingly nothing...

"They have not wanted Peace at all; they have wanted to be spared war -- as though the absence of war was the same as peace."
- Dorothy Thompson

"Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free."

"First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out

Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me."
