glinda: roller derby girls on track with lens flare (roller derby)
[personal profile] glinda
Got my first derby related injury today. I do my double-knee falls too abruptly, literally dropping to a stop instead of sliding, so I've ended up with a lump on my knee. I attacked it with witch hazel gel and a heat bag and the swelling's gone down considerably but its still quite sore whenever I bend my knee. Still having ridiculous amounts of fun anyway. We learned walking on our toe stops (one the girls who the refs had spotted as the fastest of the girls - on her old skates, she was waiting to see if she liked it before buying good ones - was jogging round on her toe stops while the rest of us were walking, or if they were me sauntering, I like this trick, and afterwards the refs were triumphantly telling the rest of us committee that we'd fond our jammer which is :D news!), running starts and did relay races. Fun, fun, exhausting, fun.

I meant to post about it previously but I strongly suspect that I forgot. I've been having issues with my ankle for a while now, with it locking up at inconvenient moments. Normally when I'm vacuuming, which was more an inconvenience than a proper issue until I took up roller derby, then it became a liability. So I went to the doctor while I was off at the end of November and she gave me some exercises for it and they work! It's been locking up less and less (whereas previously it had gone from being an occasional thing to a semi-regular thing) and today I got through an entire practice without it acting up. I'm still going to buy ankle supports for derby because clearly I have a weakness there but its not going to stop me doing derby properly (which was my main concern, I can live with hobbling around for twenty minutes after doing the vacuuming, not being able to take part in derby would be gutting). Yay!

Unrelatedly, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking went live today! I got lots of lovely greetings, icons and ficlets. I got:

Icons from:
BERJAYA [livejournal.com profile] lindenharp - Amy and her Boys! I've been saying for ages that I needed an Amy icon and now I have two! :D
BERJAYA [livejournal.com profile] anonymous_sibyl - I have a Lost Girl icon! Now I really must catch up on that show!

Fic from:

[livejournal.com profile] wendymr wrote me Provocation (Doctor Who: Nine/Jack/Rose playing 'I've Never'...)
[personal profile] usuallyhats wrote me Being the Apprentice Isn't All It's Cracked Up To Be (Except When It Is) (Doctor Who: Izzy Fey - someone other than me has written this pairing, I am filled with glee!)

I also got lovely greetings, graphics and fic reviews, my face went like this: :DDDD

I only managed to write three ficlets and make two mix tapes but that was a lot better than I thought I'd do given the last minute filling of stockings that I did. It mainly involved me sitting at my laptop on the evening of the 5th, looking at prompts going 'ooh ooh I can write something for that!'. I wrote:

Risk Assessment (Discworld: Susan Sto Helit)
Not a Proper Road Trip Without a Mix Tape (Doctor Who: Peri/Erimem)
Elementary Map Reading (Stargate SG1: Sam & Teal'c)

"Smell is the most powerful memory trigger there is. A certain flower or a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten. Books smell - musty and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer has no texture, no context. It's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then the getting of knowledge should be tangible. It should be smelly."
- Giles, BTVS

Creativity is... viewing the world from a different angle. Taking things from everyday life that otherwise might seem mundane and go un-noticed, and turning them into something beautiful. Finding beauty where there seems to be none and changing the perceptions of others so they can see that beauty too. Making something out of seemingly nothing...

"They have not wanted Peace at all; they have wanted to be spared war -- as though the absence of war was the same as peace."
- Dorothy Thompson

"Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free."
- Dalai Lama

"First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me."
- Pastor Martin Niemöller

"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."
- Maya Angelou
