Today is the anniversary of both the infamous Gunpowder plot in 1605 and the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
Today the debate surrounding the wearing of veils by Muslim women rages on in parliament, the press and public life.
400 years on and people in this country are still blowing each other up and oppressing each other in the name of religion. They never learn, they don't look to the past and see that it will only make things worse. (The Gunpowder plot, nor the Jacobite rebellions didn't emancipate Catholics in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Glorious Revolution didn't remove Catholicism from England) Neither Terrorism nor Draconyian governing will not make this world a better world. Until the people of this country realise that it is not each other we have to fear but those (whether politicians, religious leaders or the media) who would use that fear against us, to keep us alone and scared, in the dark. Democracy only works when the people make it work. We must not surrender our freedom to the illusion of safety.
Bombs and bigotry may destroy buildings and people, but neither will change the important things.
Research. Consider. Argue. Think. Dream.
Remember: Ideas Are Bulletproof.
(And go read V for Vendetta it's available in most public libraries in this country at least so no excuses. If it doesn't open your eyes, then either nothng will or your eyes are already open...)
