After about half a year, a friend asking about my LiveJournal led me to contacting LJ Help instead of trying and failing to figure out a solution myself to why I was now only allowed to make Private posts, no Public, through the FAQ. Turns out I needed to turn off Cyrillic services at the settings page. Who knew? Not me.

But is turning off Cyrillic services why I now can't leave a comment on a Russian friend's LJ? I don't want to contact LJ Help again so soon, also while figuring out a delicate way to ask if this is why I'm now prohibited from interacting with Russian LJ users.

I turned Cyrillic back on and tried to comment, but it still wouldn't let me do it. ~sigh~ Has turning it off once revealed me forever more?

(Will she now be prohibited from commenting on my LJ if I start posting new things there again?)

+++

Also! I got an AO3 comment on one of my recent fics. The first comment in two months on anything new of mine. (The other few were rereads of old fics by longtime readers, which I very much appreciate, but it'd be nice to get something on a recent work.) I am initially cautious, because my spambot to actual comment ratio for the last several months is stupidly high on the spambot side. It's talking about the actual story, omg!

Then it revealed itself as another "I have art for you, contact me at a different site" spambot.

I kicked myself twice, the second time for getting hopeful.

It's already been scrubbed off AO3 by someone else, so I assume I'm not the only one it spammed.

With where Macy's decided to situate its fireworks barges this year, Queens won't get to see jack. I had some thoughts about going somewhere to catch them--Brooklyn for Macy's? Long Island for their own local stuff?--but not with this heat. I'm not getting in my car early to try to avoid traffic and then try to find somewhere comfortable nearby to spend the hours waiting.

Hopefully some Queens locals will let off some illegal personal stuff to make up for it... and won't get harassed and found by the NYPD police drones.

From [personal profile] musesfool, the AO3 alphabet meme:

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for [starting] a fic title? One fic per line, 'A' and 'The' do not count for 'a' and 't'. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

B - Babes in Toyland (Buffy the Vampire Slayer [movie], Pike/Benny)

D - Daily Free Spin (Weiß Kreuz, Schuldig & Brad Crawford)
E - Early in the Mourning (Andromeda)
F - Fallout (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU [anime], Hayama Hayato/Hikigaya Hachiman)
G - Games People Play (Andromeda)
H - Halber Mensch (Weiss Kreuz, The Sandman, Schuldig/Fujimiya Aya (Ran), Brad Crawford/Schuldig)
I - I Lost My Limbs But Not My Lover (Twitch City, Newbie/Curtis)

PicarelliOne of my recent cemetery photos on Flickr, this one, was chosen for Flickr Explore and it's racking up views and faves as a result. It's kind of shocking for me, because it's certainly a nice photo but I have so many I think are more interesting or unusual. I mean, thanks, but I kind of don't get it! I only know that's what happened when somebody commented on the photo congratulating me on it making it to Explore.

This photo is in a batch of ten recent St. John Cemetery shots I recently posted to my Flickr.

Guys! I got tired of my Archive of Our Own icon being stretched out sideways due to it not being exactly 100x100, so I was forced to put a white border on the sides to make it 100x100. I did a PrtSc to get the exact white AO3 uses. Is it perfect? No. In some situations on AO3, like in a reply chain, it'll look a bit weird. But it's better than me looking at AO3 and constantly thinking, "No! Wrong!" and "Why is she bloated?" when I saw my icon on the site.

::hums, "Look What You Made Me Do"::

I have been using exactly this image, at exactly this cropping, for 24 years, since I started LJ in 2001. Changing that to try to hit 100x100 would change the image and lead to me having cognitive dissonance every time I'd see that version on AO3, so I just don't.

I reached a point where me procrastinating on doing my taxes was stressing me out, so I buckled down late Monday night and just did them online with a free tax service. I'm very thankful that past me posted my tax difficulties to my LJ/DW because each year I forget the idiosyncrasies and flail in panic for a few moments, then remember to check my past tax-related entries and there they are. This year I was thrown by TaxSlayer tossing my federal form for a problem it wouldn't specify, then remembered how last year I had to put a certain thing in the interest field to make it work, which it did once I did it. I e-filed them via TaxSlayer very early Tuesday morning and both federal and state were accepted the same day. Given the current federal chaos and threats made toward the IRS, I wanted to get it done before... I don't even know what.

(I feel like I've aged ten years since the end of January.)

+++

A few days ago, having not heard anything from AO3 Help, I deleted my still not-visible AO3 user icon and uploaded the image again anew, but it seems that AO3 has made it so the icons once again have to be 100x100 exactly, so the icon is stretched out sideways to make up the difference. So I put in a help request for that too.

It's funny reading Thousand Autumns after the other danmei I've been doing like Heaven Official's Blessing, The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, and The Husky and His White Cat Shizun. They come off as rather fanfic-y in comparison to Thousand Autumns' deeper dive into history and mystical swordsmanship; warring and scheming political, ethnic, sect, and philosophical factions; and quest for enlightenment. It's far less concerned with demons, gods, and ghosts. The others are more pairing-based, while the pairing in Thousand Autumns is slooooooooooooooooooooow burn. Shen Qiao also goes through a lot of character development. (Note: I'm three volumes into the series so far.)

It's not necessarily worse or better, but different.

A cable that connects my CD player to the 2020 Kia Forte's stereo system via aux port works great. Unfortunately, my 1998 CD player turns itself off if it gets jostled a little, which is a problem while driving. The Hold switch being on makes no difference; whether I'm using batteries or have it plugged into my car's cigarette lighter for power makes no difference. For unknown reasons, it's more resistant to doing so within playing two songs, but afterward is absurdly sensitive.

Kia Forte dashboard with CD player hooked in via aux cord

The car lets me play music via my phone with USB hookup or through Bluetooth, though I think the USB hookup version sounds better, but I also have CDs and would like to be able to just play them too.

I saw Deadpool & Wolverine Saturday and mostly enjoyed it, though I thought it was too long in places and the pacing was sometimes a bit off. It's unfortunate that I'd inadvertently gotten spoiled on one thing--spoiler )--because it would've been a fun surprise. spoilers )

I visited my due South friend of nearly 25 years to see it, and my Elantra did the 100+-mile round trip, something I was a bit nervous about. With the too many places in NYC that have a 25-mph speed limit these days, it was healing for me to fly down two highways at 65-75 mph in New Jersey.

After seeing the movie, Kasha and I figured that AO3 would soon have slash fics set in spoiler ), and sure enough, they immediately started showing up.

By the way, the episode of Hot Ones that has Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds was fun.

Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion 3When I drove into Manhattan early Saturday morning, I saw that Bergdorf Goodman did some Met Gala-related windows after all, three of them. (These displays weren't up the last time I swung by on May 5th.) They took more of a clue from the "Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion" idea than "the Garden of Time." Neither Bloomingdale's nor Saks did windows for it.

I've posted some new Bergdorf, Bloomingdale's, and Saks window photos, as well as some Spring flowers and St. John's Cemetery photos, at my Flickr.

RATING: PG-13
SPOILERS: Spoilers for Stargate Atlantis’ “Enemy at the Gates” and Andromeda’s “Angel Dark, Demon Bright,” “Harper 2.0,” and “The Heart of the Journey (part 1 and 2).”
SUMMARY: Harper’s experience and impressions of the people of Atlantis and Earth in the 21st century.
NOTES: This fic takes place in 2010, the year I wrote the original “Swap.”
This is a much longer, with more bits, version of a comment I wrote on the AO3 edition of “Show and Tell” about Harper’s experience and impressions of Atlantis and its Earth, along with some ideas of what Atlantis would have to deal with in its current placement on Earth.

SUMMARY: A freshly kidnapped Harper has to deal with his captor, Tyr, trying to convince him to cooperate and work with him. It doesn't help--or does it?--that you could cut their sexual tension with a knife.
NOTES: Sequel to “All That’s Mine” in the A Lot Like You series.

That said, what fandoms I'm currently reading in are The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, Gotham, and Nimona, with a dip into The Witcher, Loki, and Blue Eye Samurai. It's unfortunate that the fic on AO3 for Blue Eye Samurai mostly isn't hitting the points I'd like to see, but it doesn't make me want to write fic to fill the gap.

Season two ended up being about Loki after all, which is nice since I often couldn't say that about season one. Enjoyed the Chicago World's Fair setting of episode three since that's on my historical bucket list, just not the serial killer part.

The Rockefeller Christmas tree arrived this weekend, and hearing about it made me sadder than usual. Chopping down an 80-year-old tree and driving it 200 miles within a kind of convoy so it could be displayed for less than two months and then turned into lumber and mulch. Far from green of them.

Unlike the first Rockefeller Christmas tree in 1931, during the Depression, when the workers building Rockefeller Center pooled their resources to buy a 20-foot tree they decorated with strings of cranberries and paper garlands made by their families and some tin cans. In this photo of it, the workers are receiving their wages nearby. In the background center and right are St. Patrick's Cathedral and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Like This fanfic is a perfect blend of romance, action, and suspense. Great job! For my short slice of life story, "Push."

Same fic. Kudos to you for tackling such a complex and sensitive topic with grace and sensitivity. Your thoughtful approach and respectful portrayal really impressed me. This is an important piece of fiction.

I have 16 new window display photos, from Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, up at my Flickr.

I'm trying to get my night photo trips on before Manhattan starts 24-hour "congestion pricing" for cars driving in and out in April. (They know that, but they refuse to finalize a pricing structure yet.) Yes, they intend to charge even at 3 and 5 a.m., and I am ticked off because hell, no. I am not taking the subway in and out of the city that late.

Staten Island and New Jersey are suing over it, and I fully support this.

The city has an answer to people saying this means strangers will be parking their cars in certain neighborhoods once congestion pricing hits: they'll make the people who live there pay monthly for a pass that will allow them to park their cars on the streets where they live. Wonderful.

(Wow, why do so many people dream of moving out of here?)

Just another way NYC is making living here a more restrictive, mad expensive, and less fun existence. City of dreams, my ass.

The recent debate about gas stoves versus electric have me at a position people might consider conservative but I have reasons. New York state is also talking about making it a law that new buildings have to be heated by electricity, not gas or oil. From my perspective, based on the area of Queens I live in, those are absolutely non-starters because our electricity here, despite the rates we have to pay going up yet again recently, completely sucks. I've lived here 17 years and I was stunned that we didn't have a single blackout last summer that went on for more than an hour because that was the first time. I live on the third floor of my building and can see very well that the overhead power lines--that also often get messed up in major storms, resulting in blackouts--have almost no casing left on them and look threadbare and ancient. (We constantly ask for our power lines to be put underground, where they'd be safer, but know that'll never happen.) I don't know where the electric utility puts all the money they keep extorting out of us, but it's certainly not in maintaining or improving anything. If we had to pay for more electricity to heat our homes or cook our food, we couldn't afford it and since our infrastructure is in terrible shape we'd probably be unable to heat ourselves and our food a lot of times even if we could.

Besides, I'm a renter and a poor, and I don't have a say in these things. I can barely get my landlord to fix anything we already have, let alone provide something new or especially something upgraded.

The number of people dying locally in building fires caused by off-market e-scooter and e-bike batteries exploding during charging or regular e-scooter and e-bike batteries just being charged incorrectly recently isn't endearing the use of electricity as a better or safer option for everything in the world either.

But in recent years NYC has had a number of well-intentioned goals they institute or try to institute that currently lack the means to get to the point where they can truly be adopted without a lot of lower-level people with less money suffering and experiencing a lot of problems from them... and that's not being addressed by anyone in a position to do much about it.

I had a lot of plans for my Tuesday, calling various recalcitrant organizations about their Medicare prescription plans, since the deadline for that is December 7. Unfortunately, I did none of that because I got one of the plagues going around and feel absolutely awful. I haven't been this sick in a long time, and all the coughing ripped up my voice too much to do any phone work. In addition to the coughing, sneezing, sore throat, and face ache I mentioned in my last post, I also have fatigue, body aches, a pain in my chest from all the coughing, and fever. I've been doing a lot of resting and drinking a lot of liquids. I went out to get a COVID test done and will see the results sent to my phone this afternoon. For some reason I've gotten seven different feedback comments on AO3 from four people in two different fandoms and I don't know why it's happening but I am so happy about it. Especially since prior to this I hadn't gotten any comments in ages.

The fact that it's happening in the summer makes it even stranger to me because, in my experience, it's not a great time for fandom engagement.

It's been so hot here lately--about 90°F/33°C--that I can barely breathe sometimes, my chest hurts, my joints hurt, and my body has been useless and sick-feeling. It was my week to clean the bathroom, and even doing it with a fan directly on me the whole time my body was saturated and dripping with sweat afterward. Since electricity for air conditioning is so expensive, I'm trying to survive while using it as little as possible, mostly at night when I need to sleep and then using a fan when I can get away with it, but damn.

My appetite has gone weird in the summer as usual, and it was interesting going back to summer 2001 via an LJ e-mail and seeing that it was already a problem years before I got my Chiari diagnosis, something I hadn't remembered. It was 20 years ago after all. Oy.

It's not the only thing where I forgot how long-term it was, as per this entry of mine from July 13, 2001:

My hair color is still darker than I wanted but getting lighter, and I am loving how shiny it makes my hair look. Prior to the dye job, my long, grown-in, smooth, dark roots got too oily quickly, while the dyed hair had been dry and damaged and often looked more strawberry-blondish than red, leaving me with a mess that was difficult to care for and could very easily look crappy. Jamming 1 (jpg)On a recent night drive, only Bloomingdale's had anything interesting going on in its windows, and then only a few windows. Here's a video of the window in the photo, because its background changes. Bloomingdale's had a bit of a rainbow lightshow going on the building itself for Pride month.

I recently discovered SquidgeWorld Archive, which looks and acts somewhat like AO3 because it uses the same open source code, and that 56 of my fics are there from its incorporation of Peja's Wonderful World of Makebelieve, which takes me back. I'm currently correcting some coding stuff and some of the presentation of those fics. Interestingly, some of them there have gotten many more hits than they have on AO3.

My brain recently made a frankly cursed connection between Schuldig and Gritty, and I resent it.

Voting in the NYC primaries netted me yet another new pen from the city of New York, my third since voting during the pandemic.

The saga of my two bad teeth continues on, with me attempting to get the necessary work done feeling like slowly pushing a boulder up a hill with my nose while dentists and endodontists do nothing aside from pretending they don't notice me. Also, Medicaid's lists of practitioners who supposedly take Medicaid continue to be trash, offering wrong addresses and/or phone numbers, practitioners who aren't in the specialty you asked for, and practitioners who don't take Medicaid. Also, it is strangely difficult to get dental offices to answer their phones these days. Medicaid sent a letter saying the post and crown have been approved for the right side tooth I had the root canal on, but my dentist hasn't gotten notice so.... I have a telephone hearing on the topic scheduled for June 30 and don't know if I should cancel it.

While the people at the new neurologist's office are nice people, they don't tend to get anything done. When I last saw the neurologist at the end of April, she said it would take a few weeks to order the Botox in and then I can get the injections for my head and neck done. Two months later I'm still waiting. Last Monday they said on the phone they'd prescribe me Ubrelvy and have their pharmacy deliver it to me, and I never got anything. Today they said, after me calling to look into it, that there was a problem and now I'll be getting it soon. Nice people, but if this keeps up I'll be shopping for a new neurologist again.
