The plot is honestly pretty solid, the characters are enjoyable, distinct, and creative. Show has a lot of its own identity and doesn't just rely on generic settings and tropes. Pacing is nice, and they have a balanced ratio of comedy-action-emotional scenes.
If you're okay with ecchi? I recommend it. If you're *looking* for ecchi? I definitely recommend it. If you're averse to ecchi? best avoid.

But the one thing that makes this stand-out to me? It's the only modern anime I've seen willing to use fanservice like they did back in the 2000s/2010s. It feels like I'm watching Highschool DxD or Infinite Stratos again.

Man where do I even start with Twin Star Exorcists. I went in expecting just another shonen with cool exorcist fights and some romance fluff but 50 episodes later I am sitting here feeling like I actually lived through something. It is rare for a long running series to keep its soul intact all the way through but this one did. It genuinely felt like a journey.

Rokuro and Benio start off so normal. Not in the chosen one way that feels fake but like actual teenagers who got thrown into this insane world of ayakashi and onmyouji stuff. Rokuro is hot headed kinda dumb in ... the best way and carries this massive chip on his shoulder. Benio is more disciplined a bit tsundere at first but you slowly see the cracks in her armor. Their growth together is the real heart of the show. It is not just power of friendship nonsense it is messy awkward and built on actual shared trauma arguments and quiet moments where they just get each other. I caught myself grinning like an idiot during their little domestic scenes in the middle arcs and yeah I will admit it I got misty eyed more than once when things got heavy. Their bond feels earned not forced.

The story takes its time and thank god it does. Early episodes feel almost slice of life with exorcist training mixed in then it slowly ramps up into these massive high stakes battles that actually matter because you care about everyone involved. There are some wild twists especially in the later cour. I legit yelled at my screen at 2 am during one particular climax because I did not see that coming. The world building is solid too. The ayakashi designs are creepy as hell in the best way and the different exorcist clans and techniques never felt like random power creep. Every new ability or revelation ties back to something earlier. That long runtime really pays off.

Animation wise the spell effects are gorgeous. The way they animate the talismans the massive summons the raw destructive power it is fluid and colorful without being too flashy for the sake of it. Some of the fight choreography in the second half is straight up beautiful. I rewatched a couple of episodes just for the sakuga moments. The soundtrack hits hard too especially the emotional tracks that play during the quieter character scenes. Nothing revolutionary but it fits perfectly.

Is it flawless? Nah. There are a few filler ish episodes that drag a tiny bit and sometimes the side characters do not get as much development as I wanted. But those little imperfections honestly made it feel more human. This is not some perfectly polished masterpiece that forgets how to be fun it is passionate a bit chaotic and full of heart.

The ending man I am still thinking about it days later. It wrapped up the main story in a way that felt satisfying and hopeful but left enough threads open that I immediately jumped to the manga. There is so much more story there and I am dying for a Season 2. Please studio I am begging.

If you are on the fence just watch it. Whether you are into shonen battles slow burn romance or stories about two broken people healing each other while punching demons in the face this one delivers. Twin Star Exorcists ended up being one of my favorite anime journeys in years. 10/10 no regrets and I will probably rewatch it someday when I need a reminder that even normal kids can become legends.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song is a fairly quick and speedy sci-fi show that is able to produce emotions that some show's can't in double its runtime. It manages to make you care about people that are not around for very long but can related to at least on a fundamental level in some way. This show's greatest strength is definitely its ability to emotionally invest you into the characters you meet and the dire situations they find themselves in.

Back in the Before Times, there was a really fun Biker Girl anime called Bakuon! The Cute Girls Doing Things genre was pumping out so many titles that some people saw this and decided to pass. It’s unfortunate, because this is quite a good show. Another Girls on Motorcycles anime- but a very different thing to Bakuon.

Rather than a bubbly goofball; this one is about a girl who apparently has nothing at all- parents are gone and she lives in the town’s only public housing allotment- which is a couple of blocks up on a hill from a country road. She is a gloomy ... and quiet character, and the general mood of the show reflects this feeling in the early episodes. Koguma has a long and grueling bicycle ride to school, and an idea to purchase a motorcycle to make that easier is this anime’s hook…
The motorcycle she sees for a discount price at a nearby shop provides this anime’s title and now that it’s out of the way- I need to address a few misconceptions (and ridiculous claims) regarding that particular motorcycle and this anime. Some people see the name of an IRL vehicle and proclaim this is “corporate advertising” or similar nonsense. They wouldn’t make absurd claims like this if they knew anything about it- so let me explain:

History Time…

The Super Cub was introduced by Honda back in 1958, and it’s still being made- that means it’s been continuously in production for 68 years- which is longer than any single-name model of car, and so far as figures are available- by 2026 there’s been somewhere in the region of 125 MILLION Super Cubs built.
In other words the Super Cub is the most produced motor vehicle in history, EVER.  Honda has absolutely nothing to do with this anime- and please ask yourself- WHY would they even waste their time? To sell ‘a few more’? of a vehicle they’ve made 125 million of?
This seems more like a love letter to the author’s favorite motorcycle, it’s not advertising as much as admiring them. The first few episodes have a strong fanboy vibe to them, and for people who have lived with these bikes for so many decades, it's easy to see why they love them. I’m actually a little surprised it took so long for it to happen.

Less is More…

While on the subject of facts- here are some more to give you pause: the typical engine these bikes have is 49cc. That’s literally 0.05 Liter! That is smaller than the smallest mopeds on the US market, which can be driven without a license. Single cylinder obviously- there’s a 125cc version for the daredevils out there- but the standard motor is less than five horsepower! That’s right- FIVE.
So this anime is NOT going to be about young school girls tearing up the dirt track or starting biker gangs- they’re puttering around on a glorified bicycle with a mackintosh and little more. The question is- does that make for good anime?

YES. Yes it does, it’s charming and cute and very enjoyable. Koguma is adorable in a way that’s hard to describe- it’s moe kind of, but put a visor helmet on her and she’s even more cute. The motorcycle is lovingly detailed, I suspect a generic CGI model; from a mechanical angle my favorite part was when she took it to have the oil changed. It was very kind of that old man to do that for her- even though it takes enough oil to fill a dixie cup.

Koguma does eventually meet a couple of other girls- one who is a fellow biker and the other a Student Council girl- but that’s all, a small cast with an anime like this works so much better. Sometimes less really is more.
The production values are similar to what you get with things like Yuru Camp- lots of shots of scenery but it’s often kind of grey with lots of power lines, guard rails and wide streets. The most scenic parts were the winter episode- which was probably my favorite- and the final episode. Most of the time they just hang out, discuss what accessories to buy for their mopeds, and go riding around, twist-grips cranked all the way, KNEE DOWN at the blistering speed of 35mph. Hahaha..

You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda-

There are a lot of things the anime could have done better- Koguma was cold and emotionless most of the time, it would have been nice if the old man introduced at the beginning had more of a role in the story; like as a mentor to Koguma and Reiko; Shii was wonderful and the one who does her voice in the English dub made her even more endearing. A few more road trips would have been nice- like a New Years ride, things like that. It had a lot of potential but felt a bit too calm and safe.

If you’re into motorcycles even a little bit- you should watch this. If you like motoring ANYTHING, same. If you just like CGDCT anime, this still works, or if Yuru Camp, Zatsu Tabi, Encouragement of Climb had any appeal to you- this will too. But if you like Battle Shonen, I’m afraid you’ll be bored out of your mind- but you hardly need to read this entire review to get that message.

The source material is a plagiarist's loose Japanese adaptation of Salem's Lot by Stephen King. -1
That said, Salem's Lot is just a mediocre modern ripoff of Dracula by Bram Stoker from the perspective of those who stayed in the city while Jonathan Harker went to go send Dracula off to become their neighbor. And frankly, Shiki is by far probably the best adaptation of Salem's Lot to date, and the anime does plenty artistically in its own right, so you could certainly do a lot worse than this, which is better than even most Dracula adaptations.

It's ok despite its many flaws.

The anime tells an amazing story, but it is unfinished. Each story should have exposition, an inciting incident, rising action, a climax, and a resolution. This is basic stuff. However, this title lacks the last two elements in the main characters’ storyline. I do understand that the anime is really slow, and this is not a con, especially considering how well it is implemented and written in this case.

I've been on a pretty hardcore rom-com kick lately, and this ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the season. There have been some fantastic romance series recently, and *I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class* managed to stand out by avoiding a lot of the usual clichés that the genre tends to lean on.

Sweet without giving you a toothache. There are a few chances I would have liked to see. The "student teacher" relationships are presented a little too seriously but so far it's not that big a deal. There's no conflict; it represents the peaceful, funny, and loving everyday life of a girl who doesn't have to worry about anything. It's recommended for people who want to relax and enjoy a cute and mundane isekai where nothing will actually make you feel worried or anxious.

TLDR: good at making you feel bad (in a good way? probably) just trust and watch past the first few episodes

Calling this show bittersweet would be similar to calling an apple a fruit. perhaps, its more similar to calling a tomato a fruit because, after finishing, i feel much more bitter. If you wish to watch a show that definitively will cause you to stare at the blank screen, after the last episode, contemplating suffering like the Buddha (very much so the mood i was in), stop reading reviews and just watch it ( its okay to finish mine though ( •̯́ ^ •̯̀) ). ... Its doomed yuri Romeo & Juliet but with way more drama and much less lovable characters ; this Japanese Shakespeare really needs a therapist (or a search warrant), check it out, and if you don`t want to? Check it out anyway. All good roller coasters need some danger... this one could do with a few less pedophiles... but its more fun that way. Surprisingly wholesome at times... if you don't think about the pedos... or the... other stuff.

In all seriousness, it differs from the majority of Tragedy or Doomed Yuri or Psychological horror shows, mainly because i cant put it under any of those category. Its truly a unique show in its home fields and, in all honesty, it'll probably make you feel depressed and not even in a cry cry type of way but more so you'll just feel emotionally drained AS the author intended (probs), which is a testament to its quality (probs). Maybe I'm a media masochist, but either way its quality in the majority of anime-tickboxes™ is astounding, especially for this strange co-studio that made it. There isn't much i can say about the story without spoiling as most aspects are so closely related but i can say it is grimy and genuinely jaw shatteingly surprising - of which most surprises are quite hard to predict and not very cliche.

The problem is... I`m saying this from a perspective of somebody who has finished and mentally processed the show. What I`m getting at is, at the start, the show is utter shit... of course not in the completely irrevesable way but mostly because the characters are terrible (or so it seems). main girl Matsuzaka is an above averagely written yandere in comparison to others in a similar genre cough-yuno-cough, whose motives are a vague medley of "love" and "trauma" (or so it seems). Perfect good girl shio is exactly that, "perfect", annoyingly so and a clear attempt from the author to get us to like her (or so it seems). everyone else is relatively normal and disinteresting (or so it s- ... I`ll stop) they mostly just fit plot points, hida = friend, koube = flyer guy, etc, etc.

It seems that this plot therefore is just about the two mains, while this isn't true, due to some "questionable" event that end up happening in the first few episodes, the "weak" viewers get weeded out. this leaves mostly an audience of weirdos from this hyper specific niche of gross psychological yuri horror (also anyone who gets hooked). as you can imagine this is horrible for the shows ratings as it effectively makes a large amount of people hate it from the get go. This isn't very good.

But as you can imagine, the story needs this rough start to be effective, it tells you they die, gives you a mystery and then drip feeds you clues until the very last moment, therefore its exceedingly hard to give good explenation at the start in a show such as this and (most) the bad character writing is purposeful (some pointless fat here and there). what I`m trying to say is stick with it, scooby doo wouldn't be good if they unmasked and told you who the villain was at the start, and when it comes to more complex mystery than "here the bad guy" it is quite hard to give background. the characters get twisted and your opinions of them too until both are thoroughly rung out and you`ll definitely "rung" at the end.

Why? Why make an adaption of the sequel series first?

This may come as a surprise to certain people, as Kingdom of Caliburn is currently not listed on MAL as of writing this review, but Kingdom of Ruin is a spin-off series to Kingdom of Caliburn.

I discovered the series that came before because something honestly didn’t add up when I watched Kingdom of Ruin, but if I were to put that into words, I honestly felt as if Kingdom of Ruin skipped some essential world building that in turn was important to understanding and potentially even enjoying Kingdom of Ruin. This led me to looking at ... the fandom wiki for answers, which in turn led to me discovering Kingdom of Caliburn.

Which in turn led me to having a different understanding of Kingdom of Ruin, and an actual appreciation for what Kingdom of Ruin is aiming for, even an understanding of where the series is going, rather than seeing it as simply a vapid revenge story filled with a ton unnecessary gore and violence that was over focused on the messaging to the point the series honestly, I believe, has managed to turn off quite a few viewers.

The next question, one I can’t answer as I’ve not read either series, is to wonder how much of this has to do with whether Kingdom of Ruin is truly a stand-alone piece, or that the adaption suffers from those adapting it over focusing on the messaging going on. If the adaption is true to the Manga, then Kingdom of Caliburn is actually necessary for understanding and appreciating the narrative. On the other hand, did the adaption cut material that shows up in both series for the sake of being heavy handed with the messaging.

Which brings me back to why make an adaption of the sequel series first?

This absolutely doesn’t make sense if Kingdom of Ruin isn’t a stand-alone piece, although if the publisher and creator mistakenly thought the piece to be stand-alone enough they may have pushed forward, not realizing that one of the reasons Kingdom of Ruin sells is because of the Kingdom of Caliburn fanbase, to which one shouldn’t underestimate the importance of a built in fanbase for selling a product.

On the other hand, if this is a stand-alone piece, it means things were actually cut from the adaption that were important to understanding the series in question, making this a series that was poorly adapted from the source material.

Either way, I can’t recommend, though in saying this, my recommendation may end up changing if Kingdom of Caliburn were to itself get an adaption, if the former reason is the reason behind why Kingdom of Ruin’s adaption ended up the mess that it did.

But I can also say that Kingdom of Ruin very likely isn’t the vapid revenge story that it appears to be because of the Anime, simply because of what I learned from Kingdom of Caliburn, which in turn does make me suspect Kingdom of Caliburn is in turn far more integral to Kingdom of Ruin than expected.

The story here is pretty average and predictable, relying heavily on the clear trope of an unpopular boy with a popular girl, though this time it adds a love triangle into the mix. The first season had an impact on me when I was a teenager and many many years later, the impact was big enough that I did remember how interesting this anime was even though I have forgotten 99% of the animes i've watched when I was younger. Subaru has never been an interesting character. Call it the "Isekai disease" but these characters tend to be random losers we know nothing about and because they were hikikomoris, their lives are dull and uninteresting. The point of the genre is to forget that life and live another life in another world. We were unaware of Subaru's ... past and he has always been an idealistic kid simping over a girl but the setup during the first season gave the anime a better success compared to a vast majority of Isekais. The loop concept is interesting, the physical and psychological torture endured by Subaru gave the impression that the depicted world was a rough place. There wasn't really any comforting moment even though the season was 25 episodes long. Indeed, considering the problem to be solved implied a shocking and unpredictable end during the first season. The anime had the audacity to show us violent scenes to make us understand the pain Subaru came across.

However, the second season is nothing less than a glorified 25 episodes stretched single arc that pitifully tries to make us feel pain using psychological means instead of showing us violent scenes like the first season. While long dialogues with a lot of infos and details to make us understand a character's psychology works in a novel, it is a blatant insult to cinematography and that is precisely what this entire season did. We are supposed to feel the sorrow of Subaru and the impact of his choices meanwhile 75% of the season depicted him as a naive kid spouting about the "power of love and frienship" during all his speeches. This season is nothing more than a giant filler episode you could find in Boruto.

The season introduced interesting concepts regarding the sins and the witches. But it seems to me the animators were more focused about the "waifuization" of these witches than what really lies beyond. 2 episodes in which we can finally use our brains to analyze and understand the deeper meaning behind their behaviour and their related sins and that's all.

On the same note, this seasons really tried hard to be a "character development" moment with the trials that force the characters to face their past and the hidden consequences of their decisions (for Subaru). I won't even speak about the low quality of character's past and the related flashbacks. Let's just say Subaru was a better character when we didn't know anything related to his previous life because that part was litteraly treated as an entire joke as if it was a comedy.

Regarding the consequences of his actions, this part lasted 5 minutes at most. How can we believe these 25 episodes of 30 minutes each were full of mature and interesting conversations if the most important topics are either treated as jokes and poorly written or if they last 5 minutes ??? A single boring motivational speech about simping and love lasts literally longer than every major thought provoking moments during the entire season ???
You've got a story about sins and interesting powers related to these sins and everything you show in 25 episodes is just a mix of waifus and Boruto level speeches for 20 episodes ?

The season is so bad even the rhythm is an insult to my brain. I do remember that moment a flashback began until the end of the episode. Then, for no reason, another flashback about another unrelated character begins at the start of the following episode and then we finally see the end of the first flashback. Wtf am I watching ???

I could speak about how dull side characters are during this season of about the scandalous amount of time we get to see them considering how bad they are. I could explain how much of a mistake it was to lock this season on one arc and one location. How disappointing and naive character development is in this season. But at this point, just read the novel if you're a reader or just go beyond that season if you consider watching this. It really is a time consuming and time wasting season.

I think the shorter episodes worked -incredibly- well for something like this. I have seen other slice of life animes that feel like they draaaag on because there isn't too much substance within the show, so having 5-15 minute episodes felt really easy to sit through and enjoy.

They make the joke that the male MC is pretty dense but damn.. he really can't pick up on context ...

Agents of the Four Seasons was one of the most disppointing series of the season. Because with a lot of shows, you usually know what you get. If I watch the new Isekai, I don't expect much. But this show at least tried to imply early on that it wanted to do something unique and not just go the same route every other show takes. And there were moments where it was able to achieve what it wanted to. However, most of the time, the ideas fell flat for me and that had mostly to do with how the writers decided to present us this ... story. But let's start at the beginning.

The show takes place in a sort of fantasy type world. Because instead of seasons just coming and going, you have agents who got powers by the gods to invoke the new season. So basically, whenever it's time for Spring, the agent of Spring has to travel around the world and bring Spring to all its different locations. Which sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare, but let's ignore this for now. Because even without that, the anime shows early on what problems come with such a system, since there was no spring for 10 years as the agent of spring had been kidnapped by a group of insurgents and therefore couldn't perform the ritual. Though, it's also not 100% clear what the consequences of this truly were. Because in episode 1, it is implied that this meant eternal winter, but later on, we meet the agents of other seasons and it doesn't seem like they were out of a job for 10 years either. But all of that isn't really important anyway, because the core of the story isn't the magic or the system around this magic, but the agents and their guards who are all treated less like humans and more like objects. With Hinagiku, agent of spring, being the prime example. Because when she was kidnapped, the spring village barely cared to even look for her. They just hoped she would die, so another one got her powers. And you can already see how this type of story telling can resonate with people. And tbf to the show, it did for me as well in the first episodes. Because while the characters are rather typical, the anime gave me enough information to understand where everyone is coming from, what their feelings and even their wishes for the future are and how these traumatic events from the past influence their decisions in the present.

Now that all sounds fine on paper. The issue is that the show is way too focused on the past than the present. And it does that by showing flashback after flashback. And don't get me wrong, I don't think flashbacks are bad in themselves. For example, when it comes to the story of the agent of summer, this worked well enough. The anime gives you information about the agent's and guard's past and then uses that information to drive a plot in the present in how they overcome their differences and strengthen their relationship. This is how flashbacks should be used. Tell us, the viewers, the necessary information, so that we understand the present conflict and there is a sense of progression when this conflict is solved. However, the show doesn't do that for our main characters: Hinagiku, Sakura and even Rosei.

As mentioned, we get a flashback early on that already tells us what we need to know about our main characters. What was the traumatic experience and why they are the way they are now. However, for some reason, the show decides to give us basically the same flashback three different times (actually four, not counting the first one). Because it shows us the same event from three different perspectives. And this could be interesting if the characters were fundamentally different, so that learning about them gives me more insight into them. But only very few aspects of the additional flashbacks really add anything to the characters, because they are all so similar to one another. Take Sakura for example. Early on, we learn that she is now a lot stricter with herself because she blames herself for Hinagiku being kidnapped and that she only trusts herself, because the villages stopped the search for Hinagiku early on. From this flashback and the scenes in general, we also already know that Sakura isn't just doing the guard job as her duty, but that she has feelings (in one way or another) for Hinagiku. That should be fine. So then we get her personal flashback, which only adds that before meeting Hinagiku, she was all alone and isolated and Hinagiku was her first real friend. I mean, sure. But what does this information add to our character? We don't suddenly see her differently in the present, because this bond between the two was already clear beforehand. All this flashback adds is another "trauma dump" for our characters that is supposed to invoke an emotion in the viewer. And this would be fine, if her trauma was significantly different, but in the end, she is the same has Hinagiku and yes, even Rosei. All three of them had an isolated childhood with no friends and only meeting each other, they had their first memorable relationship. The show basically tries to use the same story three times to get the same emotional response out of you. And I just don't think that works. Even worse, it takes away from the original flashback that did actually invoke an emotion in me, because now it feels like I was just badly manipulated.

The second big problem of this decision on focusing on mainly flashbacks for the emotional core of the story is that the development of the characters just feels very strange. There isn't much present day story so the whole development is pushed to the final three episodes where things now have to escalate very quickly. So quickly that the show even has to mention it by saying that despite the fact that the insurgents shouldn't have any money or influence to pull that off, it seems they do again. No real explanation how btw. And all of that also lessens the impact of the traumatic experience. If the show was about the characters overcoming their trauma throughouth 12 episodes, it would feel so much more natural and earned than them squeezing that into the final three episode arc.

Now, I was very negative here, so I want to make clear that the show also has some good things about it. Firstly, the visuals are good. They are not super outstanding, but especially when it comes to colours, there is a clear intention that helps set the tone for the scene. And I also think, the general idea is a good one. Having the agents (and guards) be isolated "tools" which then rebuild their "humanity" by finding meaningful relationships with one another is a strong emotional core. And it works when the show focuses on that in the present as shown with the agent/guard of summer and autumn. And I will also say that they managed to make Hinagiku's past dark enough so that you can understand the trauma that came with it. It's just that that I think focusing more on the trauma with several flashbacks instead of focusing on overcoming that trauma is what holds this show back. If we actually spent a longer time with the characters in the present and see how they slowly but surely learn to move forward, then it would have made a bigger emotional impact on me compared to showing me the same traumatic event several times. I guess, you can say that reliving these events in your head is part of it being trauma. You can't just forget it. You remember it, even if you don't want to. But if that was the idea, then I think there should be a better way of showing this.

This anime isn't as good as I expected. But I need to be brutally honest anyway. When the first season of of this anime dropped, it left audiences with a sense of cozy feeling. It executed the slow-burn, "will-they-won't-they" trope with a decent plot structure and enough charm to marks itself as a comforting romance staple. The expectation for Season 2 itself is indeed high, with our main couple officially dating. Unfortunately this sequel completely misses the mark, delivering a plot that replaces genuine progression with a depressingly loop of eventless monotony. It's kinda disappointing sequel that ultimately feels like a massive waste of time.

The ... main issue plaguing this season is at its plot structure. The narrative pacing is a total mess, characterized by a strangely repetitive cycle. Almost every arc follows a repetitive formula: a brief segment at school, introduction to a potential conflict (optional), resolution, and a lovey-dovey stuff happening in the apartment.

The wasted potential plot here are very frustrating. Romance sequels where they're dating should explore the complexities of a new relationship, yet any hint of dramatic tension or external conflict is lacking. Situations that potentially possess enough narrative weight to be stretched into three-episode arcs are instead resolved instantly to a single episode. The writing constantly takes the path of least resistance, rushing through meaningful friction just to return the characters to their status quo. Without any conflict or stakes, the show becomes borderline dull and entirely uneventful.

While the beginning of the season seems promising, the series literally quickly fell off. While yes the main couple officially together, their dynamic feels like it's taking a step backward. Rather than building emotional depth, the series leans heavily into superficial intimacy that borders on a "soft-ecchi". The rapid kissing, hugging, saying "I love you" or something like that including neck-biting which they do it casually feels shoehorned in and hollow.

Season 1 you got utilized domestic interactions to build a "bridge of trust" between two lonely individuals, but Season 2 uses them as narrative filler. The anime serves an absurd amount of production value to animating unimportant, repetitive domestic acts that serve no purpose to the plot whatsoever. What was once sweet at debut season quickly becomes cloying, annoying, and feels uncomfortable to watch. All the lovey-dovey stuff loses its impact when it isn't earned through story progression.

If there is anything to save this series, it lies in the production. The animation are actually really visually appealing, maintaining the clean character designs and soft, warm lighting that fans appreciated in the first season. However, beautiful aesthetics cannot fix a hollow script. The visual polish only highlights how little is actually happening on screen.

Additionaly, the supporting characters does absolutely nothing to alleviate the boredom. They're completely uninteresting, acting merely as background cheerleaders for the main couple rather than serving as distinct individuals with their own subplots. And ironically they actually more well-written than the main ones. When the season finally finished, it does so without providing a single grain of satisfying payoff.

This anime could have been the ultimate comforting romance sequel. Instead, its straightforward, conflict-averse approach completely ruined its momentum. It trades genuine emotional development for a repetitive, apartment-bound loop that leaves the viewer feeling stuck in place. I walked away from this season forgetting most of what even occurred because so little of it was genuinely memorable. While given the high expectations built up by its predecessor, this sequel simply wasn't worth the shot. Not recommended.

I don’t necessarily want to call this a waste of a great premise, because all things considered this is a fairly enjoyable comedy show, but when you start to think about the greater potential of the show it’s hard to not fantasize about what could’ve been. The idea of showcasing a world where the final boss had already been defeated and how the resulting aftermath isn’t so much an era of peace, but rather one of recession, is actually fascinating and because this ends up being sidelined for what’s essentially small/mid tier business vs Walmart I can’t help but feel at least a little disappointed.

This ... expectation isn’t entirely on my own self perception of the show either. Much of the finale is based on the idea that maybe there does need to be a final boss in the world in order to maintain a more stable economy for the humans. Those who dedicated their lives to becoming heroes now have to work minimum wage jobs rather than exploring, collecting treasure, and eventually saving the world. Since most of the economy was centered around selling items to heroes, many items are now hyper deflated in terms of value, swords and such are being sold off at pawn shops for 1% of their original value because there’s no need for them anymore. The show makes an effort at exploring this premise but it mostly ends up being hand waved rather than given proper development, which is a little unfortunate given that it’s the titular purpose of the show in the first place.

Granted, it’s not as if I’m unaware of the kind of show this is. At the end of the day, this is a fish out of water comedy with ecchi elements, and on that front I think it ends up succeeding. It’s not like anything in here tries too hard to go beyond standard, but I found most of the bits end up paying off fairly well and Fino does her job well at being an eccentric, ignorant, cute girl with decent chemistry with Raul. I would’ve liked if more of the cast was allowed to have more of a personality, especially with regard to the “rival” Airi who ends up being a fairly underwhelming tsundere, but they do enough to maintain momentum while Fino and Raul do their routine.

While the comedy isn’t anything you wouldn’t have seen before if you’ve seen any amount of ecchi-comedy from this era, I think where Yuushibu finds success is in how much it’s willing to commit to the bit. This is very much the kind of show that’ll cause people who dislike fanservice in anime to go crazy. If it’s going to show a perverted old man groping someone it’s going to preface it with a heroic theme song, which ends up becoming his theme song as it plays every time he’s on screen. This extends to practically every bit in the show, perverted or otherwise, and I find it works more often than not.

It’s just such a shame that such an interesting premise had to be delivered in this manner because, for me anyway, it had so much potential to be something even greater. It keeps these elements at a distance, only occasionally making mention of Raul’s past as someone who will never be a hero and using Raul’s bloodline as a joke more than anything, which diminishes the value of the climax as a result. I don’t mind most of the show being centered around what’s essentially minimum wage work, but it could’ve been utilized to tell something a lot more compelling rather than simply being the backdrop for comedic purposes. While I would’ve liked to simply accept this premise and move on, the show deliberately makes allusions to it throughout its entire runtime, creating this odd dissonance between its more interesting premise and actual content on the screen.

For instance, one episode ends with Fino wondering if it would be better for her to return to the demon world and become the new final boss as a means of stimulating the economy… only for the next episode to begin with her drowning an omelette in ketchup and saying that she doesn’t linger on the past. Every serious moment is subsequently followed by some form of levity, and I wish they’d just go for one or the other. The show is more than willing to commit to its bits, but I don’t think it makes enough of an effort to truly commit to being a comedy rather than something more (or vice versa), and these half measures permeate throughout its runtime, diminishing its overall value.

We’re jumping into the world of Steel Angel Kurumi again with 4 OVA episodes that serve as a direct sequel but let’s be honest and say it’s truly an epilogue of the original steel angel Kurumi series because that is what it truly feels.

However in most epilogues from my experience in the anime world, they tend to be a little more on the comedic unhinged side of things, but for steel angel Kurumi I’m actually very surprised and in fact pleased that three of the four OVA episodes focuses on giving each of the main three steel angels some heartfelt character development that feels ... like it gives proper closure to the distinct personality types of the three main steel angels.

The first episode focuses on Saki becoming an actress and finding out that she truly excels in the world of acting, and she must make a tough choice if pursuing a career that she loves is worth giving up the companionship and comfort of her friends.

The second episode focuses on Karinka and the fact that she has a secret admirer. She ends up going on a date with Kamihito accidentally thinking that he is her secret admirer. However, throughout the date she gets to learn how to handle awkward romantic situations, and what truly makes her happy.

The third episode fixates on Kurumi wanting to do everything in her power to become a traditional Japanese housewife to impress Nakahito even overworking herself in the process.

The fourth episode is where you get the unhinged humour that you would totally expect during an epilogue of an anime series. Word gets out to the antagonist steel angels that Nakahito could unlock the power of the steel angel by a kiss from his lips, so every steel angel in existence shows up on Nakahito’s doorstep wanting a kiss from the reluctant Nakahito on the pretense that it would unlock some hidden ability within them. Obviously, Kurumi is not too pleased about this, and a contest is held with all the steel angels to see who gets a kiss from Nakahito but a new challenger appears to get a kiss from Nakahito herself and she isn’t even a steel angel. This episode has some of the best humour in the short OVA series.

Despite encore only have 4 episodes with each episode being only 15 minutes. There really isn’t a lot to unpack, but I do enjoy the fact that there are some good heartfelt moments for the first three episodes. These episodes do have some brief moments of humour, but they understand the focus of giving each main steel angel her opportunity to shine with regards to their wants and needs. Character development doesn’t feel cheap and I think it’s a great way to showcase the personality traits of each steel angel without having to resort to humour to do it.

The animation is the same as the original Steel Angel Kurumi series and the music is still just as serviceable as it was in the original series as well. The English voice cast is the same, and this epilogue series is just as enjoyable as the main Steel Angel Kurumi series. The episodes have the same opening song as the original Steel Angel Kurumi series, but the ending song is different, and I do personally prefer the ending of encore over the original series. During the ending credits of encore, it shows different scenes of animation from that specific OVA episode.

Overall, Steel Angel Kurumi Encore is a great companion piece to the original Steel Angel Kurumi series and it’s a suitable epilogue that shows the lives of the steel angels after the main story is concluded. It gives a detailed analysis into the character traits of the main steel angels that flows into the aura of the original series.

Master Keaton is one of the finest slice of life storytelling examples of the legendary studio madhouse. Every episode is kinda predictable yet uncommon in plot and narrative. There isn't much you can actually hate from this anime. My clueless first friend has basically almost no flaws that you can clearly point out, and overall is a really great anime.

For anyone who's read the light novels, the movie is a disappointment. Even I, having read light novels 12 and 13 which the movie adapts, struggled to follow the plot or find it interesting. The story takes place around the middle of Season 4, after the Dwarf arc and before the Re-Estize invasion.

Unlike a lot of shounen that attempt to insert comedy and fail (hmm hmm Demon Slayer), the comedy has a fair amount of laugh-out-loud moments and consistent funniness. Science, as it's presented within Dr. Stone, might be one of the most interesting and thoroughly developed characters presented in an anime. That said, Science is not a person, but it shapes everything within Dr. Stone with mostly fantastic results. The problems usually come from things that happen to not be science, such as characters, motivations, shark-jumping plot-twists, and more. Despite many shortcomings, the power and intrigue of Science is so strong that the show somehow manages to work for most of it's runtime, except for when it doesn't, of course.

As a whole, I actually really enjoyed my time watching Dr. Stone. I would ... probably give the series in it's entirety a 7 or an 8. I didn't care for how the series was ended, but given the way the author had basically written themselves into a corner I don't think it would have been possible to come up with anything better at that point. The ending of this show was sealed the moment Why Man showed up on the radio for the first time. I'm not even opposed to the addition of supernatural technology like the Medusas, but I do wish they felt more like proper inclusions in this stone world.

I thought long and hard about both what would happen with the Why Man, as well as what I thought would be the most satisfying thing to happen. And at a certain point it occurred to me that nothing they could do with or to the Why Man could possibly meet my expectations. So because of that, I lowered my expectations and they were largely met with something I consider to be acceptable but not particularly good. At a certain point I stopped enjoying Dr. Stone as a thoughtful and provocative anime, and more as a popcorn fun casual anime, which I think is a shame because it had a lot of potential to be more meaningful and deep, while still keeping the comedic and fun parts that people have come to expect from Dr. Stone.

Dr. Stone is a show that is almost entirely about science, but sometimes it isn't, and that's when the cracks start to show. Subjects like philosophy are brought up now and then but they're largely brushed aside in pursuit of scientific progress and plot progression. I don't want to go over Tsukasa's arc in-depth because that was so long ago, but I do want to mention it because it's the first time I noticed this pattern. Whether you agree or not with Tsukasa's argument is one thing, but once his "bad" philosophy is dealt with, he's essentially pushed into a corner and it's never brought up again. It's funny in that somehow, I'm able to accept the fact that Senku could somehow count every second of his life for 1000 years, of that there's a magical alien device than can somehow petrify people with voice commands, but when character personalities and motivations are unrealistic, that's where my immersion seems to break.

Xeno is very much like Tsukasa in this way. Once he was "defeated" by Senku, he basically shut up for the rest of the series and let Senku and science take the wheel, occasionally chiming in for cheeky one-liners. Stanley is essentially a psychopath murderer with probable PTSD and he just sort of randomly stops being bloodthirsty at a certain point for...some reason. He might just be happy now because Xeno is safe, we don't get much explanation on this aside from a few actions and lines of dialogue. In the worst examples antagonists like Ibara are basically retconned because of how basic and two-dimensional they were. There are so many interesting antagonists that could have been introduced into this world where science and progress is starting to appear once again, and I think it's a shame that many of these ideas were left unexplored.

One of the problems with Dr. Stone in the later seasons is that there are so many characters, and so many different science things to do, that it's just impossible for characters to get proper development. It's very rare for characters to not be one-note gags, and when they aren't they often don't get the time they needed to develop properly. This is also a problem One Piece has, an anime that has far less main characters than this one does.

The final season feels a lot like filler, outside of the last couple episodes that explain what Why Man is, and what happens after that point. A new member is recruited, someone who's good with numbers, but his introduction and inclusion feels very rushed. Moving up the tech tree into spaceships is interesting, but it's also such complex science that it becomes hard for people watching to parse and remember. Earlier seasons featuring simpler science felt engaging because learning how to make something like soap is practical and it feels useful, but rocket science might be a bit much for some. The Why Man is not framed as a particularly threatening antagonist even though he very well could be. The result is a season which feels much more relaxed and casual than previous ones, which may be enjoyable to some, but I personally found it a bit redundant.

The final reveal, Senku's final invention, is honestly a perfect cliffhanger to end on. Silly enough to match the tone of what's already happened, but practical enough to make sense as the next step up on the science ladder. By this point the story has already become impossible to believe in as real in any way so I'm at least glad they decided to embrace the absurdity on some level.

In short, the last season of Dr. Stone was pretty good, and although it doesn't meet the highs of previous seasons, I think it mostly sticks the landing, even if I have lots of problems with different shortcomings of the anime, mainly that of character progression, motivations and belivability. But it's easy enough to look past parts you don't like because no other anime acts as a love letter to science in the same way or with the same level of passion that Dr. Stone does.
