Enjoyable romance show, with a handful of characters that i found enjoyable to watch. The show did like to throw the same jokes but not too much where it felt too repetitive. It knows how to take make things feel carefree and work with it jokes but also provide the seriousness required for story development. The I enjoyed the look of the characters as the animation and art style really fit them. It's funny that I was in the mood to give Paprika a watch after seeing Christopher Nolan's Inception. Not to mention, this movie is gonna be twenty years old later this year. Kinda crazy when you think about it. Being the final movie before Satoshi Kon's passing due to pancreatic cancer back in 2010. I remember watching this a few years back and once in a while would listen in on the English version. Though, we've seen the Japanese version since I couldn't find the English dubbing. No complaints since I'll share my thoughts about it later. Either ... way, we're here to talk about dream diving but in a perspective of a psychological style of surreal science fiction.
Based on the book of the same name written by Yasutaka Tsutui, Paprika takes place in the near future where a newly created device called the DC Mini allows users to view people's dreams. The head of the team working on this treatment, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, voiced by Megumi Hayashibara, uses the machine illegally to help psychiatric patients outside of the Institute for Psychiatric Research by assuming her dream world alter-ego, a detective named Paprika. Her closest allies are the chief of the department, Dr. Torataro Shima, voiced by Katsunosuke Hori, and the inventor of the DC Mini, Dr. Kosaku Tokita, voiced by Toru Furuya. One of Paprika's patients is a detective named Toshimi Konakawa, voiced by Akio Otsuka, who is plagued by a recurring dream regarding an unknown colleague and a victim in a homicide case he is investigating. He was given a card with the name of a website where he could visit a bar to meet up with Paprika, who compares the internet to dreams. The Radio Bar is run by Kuga and Jinnai, voiced by Yasutaka Tsutsui and Satoshi Kon himself.
Dr. Chiba and her colleagues have a meeting with the chairman of the company Dr. Seijiro Inui, voiced by Toru Emori, was informed about the theft of three DC Mini prototypes, which led Torataro to go on a nonsensical tirade and jump through a window, nearly killing himself. Upon examination that involves a random parade of random objects, Kosaku recognizes his assistant, Kei Himuro, voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi, which confirms their suspicion that the theft was an inside job. If they don't find the stolen DC Mini prototypes back, there would be terrorism being committed from within others' dreams. So it's up to Paprika to search for the mastermind within the world of dreams while Atsuko and Kosaku find the prototypes before it gets worse after a couple of more homicides that had occurred in the real world.
This movie is bonkers in so many ways as it jumps between the real world with Atsuko, Kosaku, Torataro and another member of the research facility, Morio Osanai, voiced by Koichi Yamadera, to finding the perpetrator who stole the prototypes while Atsuko's alter-ego, Paprika, would have to go deeper in the dreaming world whenever Atsuko sleeps. Being monitored by Torataro, by the way. In the meantime, Detective Toshimi would go to the Radio Bar to drown his sorrows, which turned out to be a repressed memory from his youth. Exploring the themes of duality and identity, dream vs. reality, and technology and the collective unconscious. It also explores more on psychoanalysis when it comes to how dreams are portrayed as gateways to the unconscious, where repressed fears, trauma, and hidden desires are manifested. And boy, howdy, it gets trippy as hell when you go into the dream world. Showing off that detail of dreams like Paprika jumping from one panel to another like in the beginning of the movie to movie references that were featured in the detective's unconsciousness such as Tarzan, Roman Holiday and the Greatest Show on Earth. Of course, it doesn't stop Kon adding some extra Easter eggs in his own movies such as posters of his previous movies and tidbits of blockbuster bits like seeing a Gremlins doll in one scene. You could say that dreams are like movies. Actually, this movie is a deep dive into how Satoshi embedded his personal love of film and cinematic references within them. Makes sense for how that trauma reveals a little more than what you were guessing.
In terms of characters, they are fun for their given role as well as the voice actors who provided them. I will be honest, Toshimi's repressed memories confused me back then when I first saw this. I would assume that it helps his trauma and assisting Paprika, let alone infatuated with her, is what got him to get over it. While watching this again for a thorough review, I feel like there was a bit more to it than that. But I digress. There is also a bit of a surprise villain in this movie, who is the same person who stole the DC Mini prototypes, that shakes both worlds into a philosophical case of multiplicity, leading to the subjective nature of human experience between dream and reality. It's much more sinister for what unravels as we enter the third act. Then we have that sense of empathy and connection when it comes to Paprika using dreams to counsel patients. It's how the research facility is looking to use the devices without knowing the dangers of escaping into dreams along with controlling others' dreams. Especially when Satoshi and his co-writer, Seishi Minakami, were doing since their previous work for the Paranoia Agent anime. The voice acting is incredible in the Japanese department. The English version, by memory, is also pretty good with Cindy Robinson, Yuri Lowenthal, Micharl Forest, David Lodge, Paul St. Peter, Doug Erholtz, and Brian Beacock.
The music is composed by Susumu Hirasawa, and it's pretty good for how the vibe in the trippy dream world is like along with Madhouse. Let me tell you what I am not lying about when I keep saying that this movie is trippy. If you're familiar with that famous parade scene, which is near the end within the third act, it's the perfect example of how it might break your brain. The animation is also creative when it comes to Paprika herself. Again, with how she would jump into different surfaces like in the beginning sequence and during the time when she was searching for the mastermind who stole the DC Mini prototypes. How the animation twists and turns is so surreal, it might as well break the fourth wall itself with how the characters interact within their own dreams. Disturbing at times, too. Putting psychological thrillers to a whole new level like getting under someone's skin. Yeah. I certainly made that type of joke somewhere on social media. Not a lot of blood and gore, though. So you don't have to feel queasy aside from a few bodies falling from the sky. Again, how does that old man live after falling from that high? Anime movie logic, I guess. To me, this was some of the best kind of animation when it comes between the real world being normal to the surreal dream world.
Overall, this was an amazing movie given that it's Satoshi Kon's finale before his passing. You really could imagine him and Christopher Nolan meeting one another and shaking hands when it comes to making movies involving dreams but in a different atmosphere. I know I'm comparing both Paprika and Inception a little too much. I just love the concept of the both as equally as to how I loved them ten years younger. Of course, it's not the first time when you watch a movie that takes inspiration from another movie of the past. Hello, Perfect Blue and Black Swan. You'll both be next down the line when I get around you. Whether you're seeing one or the other. Paprika and Inception are what I highly recommend when it comes to dream diving. I am going to give Paprika nine Paprika under your skin out of ten. 9/10. Yes, it's a bit grotesque. It's like how I love me some body horror here and there. Then again, this isn't really a horror movie. See y'all in my dreams, regardless.

Other than that tho, I really liked this, even the romance aspect is cute. And I love how they make it clear that the agent and the agent's guard have a every strong relationship, but they dont make it weird (Sakura being the only exception).

This is my second time watching it. It's fantastic. The first anime to age up the shounen recipe and the fight scenes are great (in the second episode there's an ambiguous moment where it looks like they've cracked the "camera lens"?!)

Here is the thing with the shounen recipe: it works great. It's good to tell children (and remind adults) that they have agency and can make a difference. The issue is that, in reality, kids don't always win and then when you're thrust into the adult world, you're not always granted the time to adjust.

I wish i could like this anime but there are things you simply grow over when you watch romance anime.
1. MC is wimpy, unsure, constantly is full of himself and thinking about helping Mie instead of actually doing it, after he gets grip with reality he finally does.
2. Comedy repeats again im not against comedy but when they use same trope 18 times in one episode it gets bit boorish.

I am a webtoon reader, so I know what people dislike about this adaption.

But I honestly don't care what potential this has or what it should/could've been.

This isn't a masterpiece, but I will still recommend it. If you like the story again at a later point, but I will always recommend to consume this story in one way or the other. It's amazing!

Yes I know the animation is lacking and there are some pacing problems, but overall the story is amazing and Arthur is at least for me a good adaption of the "from another world and another life" trope.

Wow. I loved Chainsaw Man more than I thought I would. The characters were simple but well-done, the "camera" angles were very effective, the tension had me wanting to watch more and more. The art was beautiful, the fight scenes were amazing and the story just made sense.

Going into this I definitely wasn’t expecting to get yet another remix of Quintessential Quintuplets. Due to the massive success of that series that formula is fairly popular in romcom series these days, and while I’m not opposed to it in general it can easily make for a restrictive and familiar viewing experience if they don’t make the gimmick interesting enough. Mabotai does better than most, choosing to mix in action elements and crank the ecchi levels up a notch from its contemporaries, but at the end of the day it can’t quite escape that feeling of being a derivative work rather than properly cementing ... its own identity.

About half of the show’s runtime is dedicated to character interaction and this is where the basis of my comparison to those kinds of series comes from. Yuuki begins as a complete outcast in the group and is looked down upon as their caretaker, then the show follows a systematic approach where each girl gets their own little mini arc which ends with them developing a crush on him. It’s all very standard and overall serviceable, although it leads into the most drastic missed opportunity in the show. By developing the relationships in such a rushed manner it completely sidelines any form of real character development and worldbuilding and downgrades the girls into tropes. Shushu is the mischievous and assertive type, Himari settles into a friend type, and Kyouka is a tsundere. While the methods they chose to develop their relationships with Yuuki are fine, mostly in the form of combat scenarios or training arcs, it ends up leaving a lot on the table in terms of characterization and doesn’t do much to make the viewer care about them.

This is most egregious with Kyouka who despite being the main heroine barely has any sort of backstory given to her. You’re very briefly told that her entire village was slaughtered by one unique monster and her objective is to become the supreme commander of the defense force… and that’s all you get. Strangely enough, it feels like she ends up spending the least amount of time with Yuuki, only really making use of him in combat and disappearing once his reward is given. Of all the characters she’s the one you’d expect to spend the most amount of time with Yuuki but she barely feels like she has any presence in the show at all. It feels like she was supposed to have more of an arc throughout this season as well, given that she becomes increasingly jealous of Yuuki’s popularity with the other girls with every episode despite showing no real interest in him. It’s such a strange decision and it ends up making everything else suffer as a result.

The element which suffers most ends up being the plot. While it’s not like there’s a lot of plot to begin with, this season consists of introductions, a mini tournament arc, and then the climax where the actual plot is infodumped in the final episodes, the lack of general set up makes it feel more rushed than it needed to. While the show is more than willing to keep things standard it surprisingly doesn’t use Yuuki, as an outsider, as a means to explain the world of Mato, the peaches, as well as the organizations to him. While this could be chalked up to it being common sense in this world, it makes some of the reveals later on lack proper impact because the viewer doesn’t have the proper kind of context built up throughout the show. It’s not like the plot ends up being terrible as a result, but it tries to get the viewer interested far too late in the runtime and it’s efforts aren’t nearly enough to stick the landing.

Unfortunately I have to say the same about the other half of this show, the action elements end up falling into a similar category as the characters. When it comes to the humanoid characters the show ends up looking fairly decent most of the time. It’s nothing that’s going to blow you away but it’s definitely not bad, Kyouka in particular looks pretty good with her fancy sword techniques and she earns her spot as the commander of her unit. Unfortunately there are only so many humanoid characters and this level of quality does not extend to the monsters. This is especially an issue when it comes to Yuuki, given that his entire ability is turning into a monster. It’s far from the worst CGI I’ve ever seen but it’s also far from the best and whenever he has to enter an extended battle it always ends up looking for the worse. Sadly this also ends up extending to the final episode, which features a kind of kaiju battle which looks very much like it belongs in a cheap video game. Yuuki’s movements generally aren’t too restrictive or slow, but it doesn’t look great for the most part and I think it’s for the best he doesn’t end up being the focus of combat all that much in this season.

I didn’t mind watching Mabotai, and for the most part I enjoyed it, but I just wish that it was willing to take the opportunities it set up for itself. There’s such a significant amount of small improvements which could’ve been made across the runtime, and when you sum them all up you begin to realize there’s a fairly significant amount of quality left on the table. It feels like it had a hard time deciding how to split the action, plot, and characters up, failing to realize that these elements have a symbiotic relationship. Fleshing out the characters adds more weight to the plot which in turn adds more weight to the action, but they treat these elements as if they’re independent of one another. The characters get their moments, then the action gets its moments, and then the plot gets its moment, and because it has to constantly shift gears it runs inefficiently. For a show which ultimately plays it by the book it somehow failed to realize that sometimes it’s best to stay in standard.

After giving season 1 a 10/10 (to my tastes) I have high hopes for this show.
I give season 2 a 7/10 for solely one reason. No spoilers ahead.
There's a "plot twist" at episode 8 that renders the remaining episodes of the season a complete waste of time as literally nothing of substance happens what so ever. Any toddler can perfectly guess at exactly what happens for the remaining 4 episodes, it is THAT cliche. It honestly feels insulting to have my time wasted by a show I thought had great potential.

When it comes to this show, I had an amazing time. Seihantai na Kimi to Boku is one that tried desperately to subvert annoying anime tropes, and succeeded in doing so. I had already been well aware of its existence by the trailer's announcement and was firmly impressed with the artstyle, convincing myself Cloverworks somehow snagged another rom-com.

This anime is a short webseries available on Youtube.
At first I was put off by its low-framerate 3D animation and its limited expressions at times (despite the beautiful artwork), but the stories ended up being interesting and thougth-provoking, expecially the last ones.
This anime's theme was about finding your true self despite the social pressure, but also about the darker consequences of some of your misplaced wishes.
I'd recommed a watch, if you can withstand some of the artistic flaws.

P.s:
The music of the anime was also quite good.
I liked the witch Nina and all the "clients", except for Akihiro in ep3. And IMO Haruka in ep1 ...

Well... Hmmm... It's the sort of anime where you reach the last episode and you wonder "why did I watch it?".
It's not bad. The art does the job, without being anything really good. Music is probably there, but well...unremarkable. Performances are okay. The story could be interesting, MC knows she's supposed to be a villain and fights her destiny. And here lies one of the interesting points, she does know and we get glimpses of what should really happen, of how Pride the mc is supposed to act and be evil.
Sure, why not? So, all in all, you could have a pleasant anime, sufficiently well ... executed to be worth a watch.

But then, there are the plotholes. Well, plot ravines? Plot Mariana Trench?

And there are quite a few of those.

Like, for example, the Queens must have the gift of foresight. Ok, cool. So the current queen has seen that Pride, the MC, is a total evil bully who will be a horrible queen. And what does the Good Queen do then? Take steps to educate the MC? Give the MC stellar examples to follow? Find a better successor? Nope. She just decides to mostly ignore the kid, stuff her in some mansion where she can terrorize the staff, and forget about her existence. Yup, stellar parenting.

Another example. Stale, the MC simp (sorry, it's basically 99% of his personality), says at some point a character just has to wait a couple years, that once Pride the MC becomes queen, everything will be better and everyone will bask in eternal bliss. Why wait though? Is the current queen bad? Evil? Corrupt? Inept? Nope (well, maybe inept, considering her parenting skills). She's kind and good. So...why wait? Why isn't the queen changing the realm? Is something wrong with the realm in the first place? Well, no idea. We discover almost nothing of the world...

Also, technology is all over the place. So you have knights with swords facing bandits with...pistols? But surely, firearms are super rar...ah no, basically any thug in the street can have one... But then, why do the knights bring swords to a gunfight? No idea.

A high ranking character wants to find someone with a specific power. Surely, there are plenty of ways to achieve that, right? Issue a proclamation, hire a talent agency, ask around, etc.. Apparently not. There is only one solution: a mandatory registration. Yup. Makes sense.
Etc, etc..

Those plot holes seem to stem from the same real issue: the whole anime is made to make the MC look good. She's basically a big Mary Sue. Which means the stakes very quickly lose any importance. But the author still has to pile them on poor Pride so she struggle, find her inner strength and after much turmoil and tribulation, finally overco...Yeah, no, she basically steamrolls everything. Either herself because she's OP (but that sort of makes sense?), or she just happens to know who can solve the issue and that person is just there. What a coincidence, heh? And it's a pity, because the author could have gone a different way, could have Pride fail and overcome real challenges and pains. But the author chooses not to.

There is also something weird about her appearance. Season 1, she starts at more or less 6 years old, then we have a part where she's 11, then the last segment when she's 13. But the visuals and attitudes don't really match. At 11, she looks and acts 16 and at 13, she makes a decent 20-something... It's a little weird.

And there is a second season? Oh dear...

Its calm and steady pacing never becomes boring, ... as each episode naturally builds on the last. Combined with an unpredictable world and a well-crafted magic system based on clear rules rather than unexplained powers, the story offers a refreshing take on the fantasy genre. My only criticism is that the season ends without much closure, feeling more like a pause than a true conclusion.

Art / Sound

The art and animation are undoubtedly among Witch Hat Atelier's greatest strengths. The anime faithfully brings Kamome Shirahama's detailed illustrations to life with fluid animation and remarkable consistency throughout the season. Its realistic yet cozy art style perfectly complements the calm, magical atmosphere, while the breathtaking backgrounds and distinct character designs make every scene visually memorable. Conclusion

I can understand why Witch Hat Atelier may not appeal to everyone. However, those same qualities are exactly what made it so special to me. As an artist, I was constantly amazed by the care put into every frame, from the breathtaking backgrounds to the smallest visual details. To be honest, after I saw the first couple of episodes, I decided to hate watch the rest of the show so I could be justified in trashing it. BUT, I've come to a different conclusion after finishing the anime. Trust me, there are still mostly problems, but there's some good things.

First off, the music, character designs, and animation were great. They definitely didn't slack off on production and I appreciate that, but the first couple of episodes were HELL in other areas. I think I asked myself the same question about 50 times while watching this show, "What's the message here? What's the point ... of showing us a perfect guy who complains about his steak being too juicy and his lobster being too buttery?" These episodes really ticked me off.

Another problem is how cringe and unrealistic the entire story feels. The MC is basically a mega Chad who's quite literally perfect in every way possible. He genuinely doesn't feel like a real human being (similar to the other male characters) which is why I disliked the show. The dialogue is really awkward at times and most of the conversations don't mimic how high schoolers actually talk at all. As a slice of life show, this shit doesn't feel like real life AT ALL. I also want to mention that Kenta's 3 week transformation was bullshit. He went from a fat chud loser, to a toned slick 7/10 decent guy. He also lost WAY more THAN 2 kilos.

Another problem I had was his gloomy monologues that sounded extremely pretentious. All of a sudden, his tone becomes really sad out of nowhere and he'd rant about stuff that doesn't sound sad at all. I actually like monologues in anime, but most of the slop that came from his mouth didn't carry any actual weight since his life is amazing. I get that he has his own types of struggles even if he's the top of the top, but watching him try to promote self improvement/transformation doesn't feel very convincing. People enjoy zero to hero stories because it proves that you can make it if you try hard enough, but there's no point if the hero started as a hero.

"The main character has a tragic backstory, he is zero to hero!" First off, I still don't know his backstory (the anime didn't reveal too much), so I can't say that his life was always fluff and rainbows, but EITHER WAY, if he DID have a tragic backstory, his character still wouldn't make any sense. I'm not going to fully explain why, but writing a PERFECT character is impossible. Perfect people don't exist and we all know that. Our mistakes and flaws are what make us human and that's why I hate his character. He doesn't reflect that idea at all which makes his personally seem unrealistic. Also let me just point it out one more time, THERE'S NOT A SINGLE HIGH SCHOOL BOY WHO IS LIKE THIS. In fact, none of the characters seem like real people, especially Kaito and Yuusuke. They are 100% robots.

I'm really jealous of the main character, I hate when people complain about their lives when they're in heaven, but I think I understand how he's able to complain so much. I'm probably wrong, but I'm pretty sure he's able to complain so much because he cares about others so much.

Regardless of how much I trashed on this show, I actually did enjoy hate watching it because cheesy/corny moments make me horny. I really enjoy bad shows that feel unreal because they make me laugh.

Another season has passed, and unlike the previous one, which felt clunky, cringeworthy, and genuinely dull, this season is at least more eventful by this franchise’s standards. Even so, it still ends in the exact same place: more breadcrumbs, more hesitation, and more of the same “will they, won’t they” dynamic that is clearly being stretched out for yet another season.

At this point, I have to be honest: the series has gone on long enough that I no longer really care who Kazuya ends up with, whether that is Chizuru, Ruka, or no one at all. The story has dragged this central romance out to ... the point that it has lost much of its emotional impact. It desperately needs a new hook beyond just the main love story, because right now the two leads still do not seem to fully understand their own feelings, let alone what they actually want from each other.

Kazuya remains the same low-self-esteem simp he was in season one. Whatever growth he has shown feels minimal at best. You could argue that this is realistic, since people do not change overnight, but even so, in his current state he still does not seem close to deserving the love and attention he receives from his crush. What makes it more frustrating is that this season seems to reward him anyway. Or rather, the people around him start rewarding this same weak, indecisive behavior, to the point that it almost feels like the story is pressuring Chizuru into liking him. In fact, this may be the worst version of Kazuya I have seen in the past five seasons. It almost feels as if his character development is moving backward. Even his supposed depression arc is handled only superficially, which gives the impression that the author knows the audience does not really want to engage too seriously with that side of the character because it might hit too close to home.

As for Chizuru, her constant indecision does her no favors either, and I can understand why a lot of viewers have started turning on her and placing all the blame on her side. Personally, though, I think that is unfair. If Kazuya were able to show more maturity, confidence, or capability, I imagine Chizuru would be much more willing to genuinely consider him. Instead, it often feels like the story is trying to push her toward giving this pathetic man a chance whether it feels earned or not.

Plot-wise, the first half mostly serves to wrap up material left hanging from season four. As much as the community hyped up certain moments, my reaction was mostly just, “That’s it?” The story barely moves forward. Most of the cast are so passive and so unwilling to challenge the status quo that they cling to whatever lies are available just to keep the situation intact. That makes the entire narrative feel awkward and artificial. Honestly, without characters like Mami and Yaemori pushing things along, the two leads would seem completely incapable of managing either themselves or their relationship.

The animation is also questionable at times. It almost feels as though the production knows it has a lineup of top-tier voice actors and is relying on them to carry the entire show. Some scenes barely move at all and consist of little more than characters talking to each other. There is also a noticeable amount of reused animation from previous seasons, which really captures the spirit of the series at this point: do the bare minimum, because the fans will consume it anyway. I especially feel bad for people watching this weekly, because some episodes genuinely feel like a PowerPoint presentation. I binged the season and still found it irritating, so I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to wait an entire week for that level of output.

The storyline itself often feels mechanical. You can clearly see the outcome the author wants to set up, and the way he arranges the scenes to get there feels robotic, as if it lacks any real understanding of how people actually behave. Side characters are also pushed aside and only brought back when the plot suddenly needs them. What happens to Ruka this season, for example, feels deeply toxic to me, but because the author does not seem interested in really addressing that, she is left to endure it alone and continue acting cheerfully for Kazuya.

Overall, I still have a lot of thoughts about this show, but the actual experience of watching it now mostly comes down to sunk cost. It is not completely unbearable, but it is mildly annoying, consistently disappointing, and by this point my expectations are so low that I barely expect anything better anymore.

While I wouldn't call the story of this anime 100% original the fact that it is such a ridiculous anime actually helps it a ton to camouflage upcoming plot points. Kill la Kill also has no filler episodes helping it maintain a great pace with every episode. The plot is honestly pretty solid, the characters are enjoyable, distinct, and creative. Show has a lot of its own identity and doesn't just rely on generic settings and tropes. Pacing is nice, and they have a balanced ratio of comedy-action-emotional scenes.
If you're okay with ecchi? I recommend it. If you're *looking* for ecchi? I definitely recommend it. If you're averse to ecchi? best avoid.

But the one thing that makes this stand-out to me? It's the only modern anime I've seen willing to use fanservice like they did back in the 2000s/2010s. It feels like I'm watching Highschool DxD or Infinite Stratos again.
