I miss the days when I wrote thousands of words every day, and I'd post them here, and there were all these lovely people who would read them and say "Good job!" I mean, now I do eventually get money for the things I write. But at the end of the day, I miss the "good job" posts.

Hey folks!

I was being nostalgic over on Facebook about the good old days on here, when I would write a chapter then post it and get instant feedback. I miss that! So I thought I'd check in and say wah-hey to y'all. I'm still around on the Twitter and the Facebooks and the Tumblrs and Instagrams and, sheesh, there's so many. I even technically have a TikTok, but I've never posted there and have no plans to.

I also have a Patreon where you can get an exclusive story once a month if you subscribe for $1. That also gets you access to all the stories I've ever posted there, so it's like... 40? 50? There have been a lot. 

What's new... last time I posted, I said someone (Kate Spence) was making a short film and play based on my novel Can You Hear Me. She finished the film and it's taking out film festivals left and right. Just so many laurels all over that poster now (at the bottom of the post). So proud to see how it's being received and all the attention being heaped on Kate for her work. 

I have a book coming out tomorrow! It's called All Your Storms & Ships Called She, and it's the first book in a new series about lesbian pirates.

Oh, and earlier this year I added Chicago to my list of places I've traveled. The old homebody is starting to get good at this travel thing. 😁

Um... okay! I'm bad at these big sweeping update things. So I hope everyone is doing well!

I haven't posted here since around the time our last President was elected, so might as well wave to everyone who is still around. I've written a couple of things since my last visit. Riley Parra had two seasons! Liz Vassey and Carolyn Ratteray (Gillian and Priest) were NOMINATED FOR EMMYS for their work on the show, which is a source of pride. My novel CAN YOU HEAR ME is being adapted into a stage play and a short film called Static Space, and the woman I cast as the main character is doing the adapting (and she's actually playing the character I wrote for her!)

So yeah. If you're on the Facebook or Twitters, you can find me over on those places a lot more frequently. Just look for me. I'm probably the only Geonn. ;)

I'm not sure how many people still see this, but I know there are some. And Livejournal is where I started this journey, so it feels right to make a comment here.

Way back in February of 2009, I started something and said I wasn't sure what it would end up being. It turned into the first Riley Parra story. Over the next five years, I wrote five "seasons" of her story. Right after the series ended, I started on a path that I never would have expected: turning the novels into an actual show. It's been about two years, but we're now so close that we're talking production!

To that end, we need your help! The show is happening no matter what, but we need a little extra to make the show as amazing as we know it can be. Stunt coordinators, visual effects, and locations require moneys. You can help by donating anything you can spare, and you can get some nifty perks at the same time (signed copies of the first season! A digital version of the script! Behind-the-scenes photos! Riley Parra's lips! Wait, what...?)

Please help out if you can, or share the word if you can't, and help us make Riley as amazing as we know she should be!

This is Marem Hassler.

Marem is the actress who has been cast to play Riley Parra in the Tello Films version of the story. The picture was posted this morning to her Instagram with the hashtag "MyRileyParra." She's working out the specifics of who Riley is. Would she wear old-school Adidas (I say yes, but this isn't a democracy... what Marem decides goes as far as I'm concerned). I can't believe I'm sitting here looking at pictures of a woman who is going to bring Riley Parra to life. I've actually seen her read the script, and the second she introduced herself as Riley, I was in. This character that I dreamt up, whose name I chose, whose identity I put together word by word, is now getting life breathed into her.

Riley is one of my stories that I still remember the origins of. I had no idea where she was going or who she would become. I had the character, this tough-as-nails detective who was facing down actual evil in the world. I didn't even have a real title for her series when I started writing it (some might say I STILL don't have a real title for it... ;D), but I knew I wanted to tell her story. I told it, I finished it, and now it's coming to life in a whole new way. All these years I've written novels and stories based off actresses, either people who play the role I'm writing in another medium or actresses I've cast as my original characters so I can see them properly in my head. I never really had a solid Riley in my head. There were two or three who I thought were VERY close, but none of them were the official look. Until now. Marem is who I would choose to be Riley and, by some twist of fate, she IS Riley. That's... mind-boggling.

Not only that, the fact she's doing this prep means we're really close to filming. Actual footage of Riley Parra! ::gasp:: They're supposed to start filming in October, I think, so keep your eyes peeled here for updates! Hopefully I'll have more cast announcements soon! I can't wait to see Riley and Gillian together. ;)

I feel like a father walking his daughter down the aisle. I know Marem will take excellent care of her.

This is a story I've told before, but it's a good one. And this will hopefully help people who are coming to my blog because of the Storybundle. To which I say...



One morning, I woke up with a segment of a dream still rattling around in my head. All I had was a single "scene": Two women, one black and one white, covered in mud, blood, dirt, and grime. One was wearing a heavy leather duster. The other was a redhead. They were joined by a man who was looking much more composed than either of the ladies. The three of them stepped into an elevator. As the doors closed, the women looked at each other and started to laugh. The man rolled his eyes, exasperated. Beyond that, I only knew that their names were Trafalgar & Boone.

It was such a strong image that I went to Twitter and sort of off-handedly described it. Three different followers pushed me to do more with the idea, prompting me into making it a steampunk lesbian Indiana Jones analog. Who wouldn't want to write something like that?! I had other projects on the table at the time so I set it aside, but I kept coming back to it. Eventually I had to start writing, and the world of Trafalgar & Boone unfolded around me. It was a world just emerging from a Great War, which had been fought with magic. It was a London with airships ferrying passengers across the Thames. And it was a world on the brink of something horrible wrought by the overuse and unpracticed use of magic during the war. Strange and powerful things are afoot in the world, and only by two former enemies joining forces can anyone hope to survive.

Since being published, Trafalgar & Boone have been the recipient of several honors from Kirkus Reviews. It was given a rare starred review, named one of their best Indie books of the month, and one of the best indie books of 2015. The covers, by Rita Fei, are so spectacular that I don't know how I lucked into getting her to do them. I'm trying not to create plots simply to see what she can do for them.
