Check out the kickstarter for TUG, an indie open-world-sandbox/multiplayer RPG -- they're still a ways off from their goal and the kickstarter closes at the end of the month, and they're trying to do such cool things. I want to play this game so much.

Like -- here's a post on how exploring the world and discovering fragments of history is intended to be a key part of the experience. A+ nerd lure.

And then here's a post on creating diversity of character type and refusing to go the route of "a white male muscle-bound lunkhead or a scantily clad woman." Hell yes.

...Then just because the designs are adorable check out the posts on companion creatures and the local wildlife. I want one of those surly ram-bears so much.

Funding tiers start at only $10, and you get a playable copy of the game for that pledge. This team is trying to do so many neat things, and as I post this they still need another $40k to reach their goal. Please pledge if you can, and signal boost if you know people who'd be interested!

I will be over here trying to decide if I can afford to up my pledge to $45 and get the BABY SABRE TOOTH TIGER PET omg

I've been quiet again, I know! I'm having some brain chemistry stupids, and recognizing it helps keep me from being terrified of the feeling but it still leaves me distressingly short of energy. I hope that I've just turned a corner on it and things are starting to improve, but we'll see. I'm kind of tempted to declare comment amnesty and just purge my DW inbox, because looking at the "Inbox (54)" makes me cringe and get avoidy. sob. IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S MY BRAIN BEING A WINNER.

[personal profile] chagrined got me into Glitch last month, too, which is about the right speed for my level of engagement lately. this is my little guy (he's named after my Skyrim orc, and his character model is clearly like Jade and Karkat's baby or something); feel free to add me, if you play, and I will totes add you back. :3

Tonight signups open for [community profile] hs_olympics, which is exciting! I can't narrow down my ships to three, though, so I'm probably going to chill a bit and let other people sign up first so I see what the spread is. I keep wanting to go for something ludicrous like Dualscar♥Eridan (Team Vvanity, you guys). And I've always had a soft spot for Equius/Tavros that the Ask Team Bara folks are really encouraging. And SolKat are my forever failboys, and even though it's not my flagship this Team Wonkhonk recruiting post is adorable. And and and, the list is endless.

Also seriously self give it a little longer to make sure you're out of the woods on this low spot before you commit to new things.

Are any of y'all playing the new Alice game yet?

Because holy crap. I am in chapter 4 of 6 and I am adoring it so hard. Even though I'm pretty crap at platforming and fall to my doom like clockwork. The design is beautiful, the combat is exciting and smooth, the supporting cast is creepy in a very cool way, Alice herself is an awesome character to root for, and I could listen to the Cat purr at me all day.

not a lot of specific spoilers under here; talking about how the game handles its themes and particularly the idea of 'madness' )

In short: I was expecting to like this game on a much more shallow level than I do!

So I've been playing Rune Factory lately, on the bus and sometimes in the evenings when someone else is using a console. It's a farming sim, a game by the same people who made Harvest Moon only with the addition of dungeons and monsters. It's a quiet little game, and really good for the part of my brain that's soothed by accomplishing a lot of small tasks -- watering the field, gathering the crops, chopping wood, crafting items.

Mostly I find I have to not think about it on any analytical levels to get much out of it, though; it's very simple, story-wise, which means it does stuff like establish oppositions between Good Agrarian Kingdom and Evil Technological Empire...and it sets up one of the major goals in the game as "marry one of the girls in town."

So, you know, this means that every girl of a remotely appropriate age is a potential match for the player character; each one fits a fairly generic "type" and has a set of conditions you have to fulfill to raise her "love points" until it becomes possible to propose to her. There are a number of events in the town's social calendar on which boys are supposed to give particular items to girls as courtship rituals. So far as I can tell, it is entirely a one-way affair -- boys do/give/demonstrate, girls simply have conditions that must be met.

None of the game's mechanics are all that complex, so it's not really a surprise that the relationship dynamics function this way. But it still leaves me a little restless, and half tempted to write fic against the heteronormativity -- to just queer that little town as much as I can, because you know, we do happen even in little farm towns. I did.

So let's say you have played all the Final Fantasy games you can get your hands on; you have beaten Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts and finished Jiminy's diary (that cricket hates you, doesn't he?) and your PS2 is suffering from neglect. Or replays.

And you know, there are a lot of other ways to make that machine work for its money. Below this cut is a partial list of PS2 RPGs that I've played at least part of and enjoyed. These are not critical reviews: my goal here is to convince you that one or more of these things would be fun to play, and then maybe even write/draw for. (I will be writing for at least three of them in [community profile] kink_bingo, I expect.) So I will be focusing on the positive. You can always feel free to ask me if you want to know what a game's weak points are. ...And you can also feel free to leave recs of your own; there are games that we own that I haven't listed here because I just haven't played enough of them, and there are plenty of games out there I haven't had a chance to play at all. And hey, there are games I didn't like that somebody else might want to pick up on the strength of your rec. I will be trying to keep spoilers to a minimum here, and I ask that you do also. :3

this goes on for a while )
...I could keep going. There are other games I wish I'd gotten around to here (ask me about Okami, or about Psychonauts). But I have barely done any work at all this morning, and this is more than enough for now. Right? ...No, probably not. Somebody rec me something cool.
