rhodanum posted: of fandoms and complete shitshows
As someone who's been involved with fandoms for twenty years now, since the pre-LJ era, one of the most baffling and actively enraging developments in recent times has been the sharp rise of content-policing from within fandom itself, rather than something caused by the intervention of an outside entity (as was the case with the fundamentalist Christian group whose caterwauling kicked off Strikethrough).
This is a great deconstruction of some of the possible origins of anti-culture. It doesn't tie together the anti-culture with radfem TERFs or the "q-slur" advocates, but I wouldn't be surprised to discover that they're all interlinked.
I've never had any issues with any of these people. I've unfollowed a couple of kids on Tumblr because they were complaining about the q-slur being used by...get this...queers. I'm comfortable enough with my place in fandom that if people started getting upset with me because 1. I write incest ships or 2. I write underage characters having sex with age-mates or 3. I write RPF, I am fine with telling them to fuck off.
But not everyone can or will do that.
And it seems very relevant to me right now, because the Umbrella Academy show has both "incest" and underage elements which will no doubt outrage a lot of antis as people start creating fanworks for the show.
But go check out

Date: 2019-02-20 06:22 pm (UTC)If people get upset with me because of those things I unfollow them (though I had to deal with hate from randomers on twitter a few weeks back, which was infuriating). I just hate that antis feel like that kind of behaviour is acceptable
I was surprised that it took until yesterday for me to find people starting to complain about the ‘incest’ I just hope it doesn’t blow up (though with tumblr being tumblr...)

Date: 2019-02-20 09:11 pm (UTC)I have, in the past, had to explain why I write fics (often times with sexual content) about real people. RPF communities used to be locked so that strangers could wander by and make snide comments.
I wasted a huge amount of time and energy explaining to someone why I liked the ship I did in my old fandom, and having to defend myself against her unreasonable refusal to accept that I might like a different ship than her.
None of this is new; it's just that Tumblr, by the way it's set up to work, made it harder to avoid this kind of stuff.
And most times, I don't have to deal with this kind of shit. But I worry about the prevalence of "q-slur" and especially about the radfem TERFs.
Most of us can deal with assholes who yell about writing "wrong" ships. But radfem TERFs actively harm trans people, and that's really unacceptable to me.
*sigh*

Date: 2019-02-20 09:20 pm (UTC)I’ve never had to do that thankfully but that must’ve been annoying.
That’s so sad you needed to do that
Yeah it’s crazy how terfs are getting such a huge following. It awful how much they are damaging kids with that nonsense ugh

Date: 2019-02-20 09:16 pm (UTC)That's what they often do, too. Come into your post where you self-identify as queer, and leave remarks like "You know that q-slur was used against people like us, right? That it's an offensive, derogatory term that shouldn't be used? You should learn more about your LGBTQ+ history."
And usually these are like 15 year old kids, and you're kinda like, "Kiddo, I lived thorough that history. I got beat up/threatened/shunned because I was queer in high school. I remember the AIDS crisis."
*hands*
It's a mess, I'll tell you.

Date: 2019-02-21 02:50 am (UTC)I've seen speculation or outright declaration that some antis are TERFs, and some antis are right-wing fundies, and it's been repeatedly pointed out that a lot of antis are just self-centered jerks who can't stand that other people might read, or worse, write ships that They Don't Approve Of.
The only way to deal with entitled brats throwing tantrums is to give them the cold, hard, Welcome to the Real World shoulder: "No. I don't care what you think."

Date: 2019-02-24 02:06 am (UTC)ETA: Also, I kind of have to laugh given that back in the day I got scolded for tagging incest in my UA (comic) fic when it wasn't "real" incest. There is no winning.
