Guns and dogs. A combo since the beginning, I imagine. But perhaps not always Yorkies and guns.

The above pic is “the other sticker” on the car also shown below. I love that even a small town like Anderson has residents from many other places and cultures. For example, I took a photography class at Tri-County Tech. (Have you seen the Anderson campus? Very nice.) We went around the room sharing our names and backgrounds. The older lady in the front row introduced herself, speaking in what sounded like an English cadence. She said with a smile, “I’m Susan. As you can tell from my accent, I live in Iva.” The memory still makes me chuckle, she delivered the joke so well. She indeed is from England. (For those not familiar with Iva, it’s a tiny town in southern Anderson County — almost to the Abbeville County line.)

I like puzzles. I don’t much like math. The above equal signs repel me — too much like equations. But the words lead me to believe I could figure out the message with a little work. I THINK I have it solved. You?
(Okay, maybe it’s not THAT hard…but it did take me a minute or two.

These beautiful flowers are growing behind The People’s Bank on Clemson Blvd. I have NO idea what they are. They strike me as daisies. But more realistically, a type of Camilia? Help, anyone?

Downtown, of course. I love the medallions at the top and the different way they are treated on the two buildings. The diamond brick pattern is pretty cool, too, huh?

A few weeks ago I strolled down W. Whitner with a friend, heading toward the Chiquola. We turned right on Townsend. Angie pointed out the above nondescript building — with an important mission. Clean Start is a local nonprofit that provides shower facilities and other amenities to the homeless. Clean water. Fresh soap. It’s so easy to take those for granted. Thanks, Angie, for showing me this important place. And thanks to those who make it possible.

Outside the downtown Anderson firestation is a travel camper with “Safety House” painted in large letters on the side. It has a rope ladder and a fire extinguisher and is used, I imagine, to educate children about fire safety. The sight of the safety house (with the cute kids in the pic above) reminds me how many local homes burn throughout the year — and that I haven’t checked my fire detectors in way too long.

I was shocked and hurt, as many were, to learn that Mountain Creek Baptist Church, organized in 1789, burned Monday night, February 9, 2009. The Anderson Independent’s article found here identifies the church building as 165 years old. 1844. Quite a legacy. (I wonder if this lady, her tombstone found in the church’s cemetery, assisted in the church’s building efforts.) The newspaper’s article also links to photos taken by photographer Sefton Ipock. They are really moving. Check ‘em out. This article explains how to help the church rebuild.
I took the above photo March 16, 2008 — a Sunday morning, as you can tell from all the cars in the church parking lot. I could KICK myself hard for this horrible photo. As I often do, I took the snap, thinking the cars made the pic impossible, and I would go back later and take a better one. Did I? Unfortunately, no. *KICK* *KICK* *KICK* The church is found on Hwy 29, a “fur piece” into Anderson County. I remember my grandmother taking us to family reunions held at this little church.

This church, River of Life, sits on the corner of McDuffie and River Streets. I like the expansive feeling of the steps. Unfortunately, my wider angle lens distorted the perspective a bit — oh, and then there’s the white “blow out” by the doors. *sigh* I will try to capture it again the next walk I take downtown. Maybe an angled shot would work better…
