Thankful Thursday...

Well, dear friends, I have caught a cold and I am sure it is from the doctor I now work for part-time. He came to work on Monday with it and I just know the germs spread from the patient files, door knobs, etc. He hasn't been too sick so I'm hoping this will be short-lived. This is what I get for thinking I made it through January without getting sick (like I did last year). Blecht.

I am thankful for your patience as I get to your posts and thankful for Rebecca Jo's link-up today. Please join in HERE!

How can it be the end of January already!?

Your prayers for me are certainly appreciated. Thankful for prayer partners always!

Peace & hugs!  God bless!

NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY – January 30

NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY - January 30

NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY

In the United States, National Croissant Day is observed each year on January 30th. Croissants are a buttery, crescent-shaped rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The key to a perfect croissant is laminating the dough. Laminating the dough is a process by which butter is folded into the mixture creating multiple thin layers of butter and dough. The result is a mouth-watering flaky crust and airy body.
Legend surrounds this pastry, as is often the case with a popular, worldly treat. What is known, is that crescent-shaped breads have been found around the world for ages. One of these was the Kipferl which originated in Austria as far back as the 13th century. This nonlaminated bread is more like a roll.
Credit for the croissant we know today is given to an Austrian military officer, August Zang. In 1939 he opened a Viennese bakery in Paris introducing France to Viennese baking techniques.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Stop by the bakery for a fresh, warm croissant or try making your own using this recipe: Croissants recipe.

1.  Well, I do love croissants when they are fresh, but day-old croissants need to be turned into a donut.  I happen to really like the croissants that have a donut-like glaze on them!  Sugar overload but so good.  So... do you like croissants?   Yes, if they are bakery fresh. I don't like the Pillsbury croissants you roll yourself.  What is your favorite way to eat them?  Butter, ham salad, egg salad... or those croissant donuts you can find at Publix!
BERJAYA

2.  Speaking of food... How do you handle stress?  A leading question, but when I get a little stressed I go right for the comfort food. Carbs, carbs, and more carbs.
3.  Out of the negative emotions of greed, anger, jealousy, and hate, which one would you say affects you the most?  I guess it is hardest for me to handle hate. I really don't hate anyone. It is such a strong emotion. The news today is so full of hate and hateful stories. I don't understand how people can continue to live their life when it is full of hatred. Life is just too short for hate.
4.  Out of the positive emotions of compassion, positivity, enthusiasm, and initiative, which one is your biggest strength?  I try to be positive about everything that life throws at me. I also try to always be compassionate. I am not always enthusiastic about some things and I don't always step up and take the initiative.
5.  What do you get every time you go grocery shopping, other than the staples such as bread, milk, butter, flour, sugar...  Cheese. We always have cheese in the house and Joe would say that peanut butter is a staple. You can probably throw in ice cream too. Ha!
6.  Please tell us something random about your week so far.  Yesterday started out at the office with one patient scheduled. We ended the morning with six patients. At least it made the day go faster!!  Joe said he was tired of the hamburger/hotdog dinner at the Clubhouse on Tuesday nights so we did not go up there last night. I used to always buy Idaho russet potatoes but a while back I picked up a bag of golden potatoes. Oh my goodness are they good!! They are so creamy when baked or boiled for mashed potatoes and I wedge them and fry them in my Fry Daddy to make French fries. Delicious. I don't think I'll ever buy russets again. I guess that's about three random things all thrown together here!
Thanks for visiting today!! The linky is below if you are joining the Medley today!

Weekend Recap on Monday...

BERJAYA

The weekends are fun, even when I have to work on Saturdays (but more fun when I don't!).  Friday, my day off, Joe and I ran some errands in the morning and I did laundry and some cleaning in the afternoon.  Joe went to play Nickles but I stayed home, begging off with the excuse that I have to work on Saturday. Actually, only six people showed up instead of the usual 20 or so because most of them had gone to some special event at the Elks Club.  Joe said it was still fun.

While we were out and about, I did get a photo of the Southside Cleaners sign...

At work on Saturday, three of our eight patients called to reschedule so it was an easier day than I anticipated. The doc closed the office at noon instead of 12:30.  His daughter gave birth a week ago and his wife has been staying with them in Orlando, so the doc is driving back and forth most every evening and morning. This baby is the first boy, with three grandgirls born before this little guy. I get to see new pictures most mornings. Very cute.

Saturday evening we had Helen and Cheryl over for ham and bean soup, cornbread, and salad.  We totally forgot that Saturday was the Chili cook-off at the Clubhouse. How dumb was that?! We bought tickets and then forgot all about it.  We still enjoyed our evening.

It started raining Saturday night and the temperatures dropped into the 40s.  We are to have highs only in the low 60s all week.

Sunday we decided to not brave the rain and cold to go to church, and just stayed under the covers until after 9:00.  We had a nice breakfast/brunch and then I made some pizzelles so I could take some next door to Jill and Murray, who invited us for dinner.

We had a good time and our neighbors, Sharon & Bob, were also invited.  We played a new-to-us card game called Wizard.  It was fun and Jill prepared a good dinner for us with key lime pie for dessert.

Last week I posted about the woman who boards horses at the farm we visit each week and her daughter and friend who were preparing for a 4-H competition with their horses.  I pulled these photos from Erica's Facebook page to share.  Her daughter did quite well for her first time in competition!  She was riding Mater.

Conversation Starters...
There are actually 200 of them; I just chose a few.

What are some small things that make your day better?  The cartoons in the newspaper; a hot cup of coffee in the morning; dinner out; a smile from Joe...

What shows are you into?  Dr. Pimple Popper!, Chicago Fire, Med, and PD; Grey's Anatomy; The Resident; Outlander; Crikey It's the Irwins; Victoria; The Good Doctor; Blue Bloods; Untold Stories of the ER; New Amsterdam.... I told you we are TV junkies.

What TV channel doesn’t exist but really should?  With several hundred on our cable, plus the Fire Stick I can't think of a thing.

Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?  Both of our 'boys'.

What age do you wish you could permanently be?  Even with all my aches and pains, I would not want to be stuck at any age.  We aren't supposed to be here that long.  I look forward to my Heavenly home one day!

What TV show or movie do you refuse to watch?  There are some celebrities I refuse to watch in whatever they are in... Jane Fonda, Oprah... I won't watch Jimmy Fallen or Saturday Night Live or most of the liberal news programs.

What is something that is considered a luxury, but you don’t think you could live without?  Luxury can be defined in so many ways but our car, the dishwasher, refrigerator, comfortable bed, roof over our heads, clothing to wear, food to eat, clean water... I don't take any of that for granted.

What’s your claim to fame?  Gosh, I don't think I have any fame I can claim.

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?  I can't think of a thing.

What’s your favorite genre of book or movie?  Mysteries, medical plots, funny...

How often do you people watch?  I love to people watch and do it often.

What have you only recently formed an opinion about?  That there is more evil loose in this world than I ever imagined there was.

What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?  We play Nickels on Friday nights with some of our neighbors. Most people haven't heard of it.

What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?  Italy

What is the most heartwarming thing you’ve ever seen?  Babies; Puppies; Kittens...

What is the most annoying question that people ask you?  I don't get annoyed but I am asked frequently if my hair is naturally curly.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?  How to set up a non-profit company on Peachtree/Sage Software.

If you were dictator of a small island nation, what crazy dictator stuff would you do?  Ha!  Gosh, I have no idea. A party on the beach every Saturday afternoon.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?  Get outside and just chill... as often as you can!  Enjoy God's beauty all around you. Take a hike. Sit on the beach. Swing in a swing. Sit on a bench in the park...

We enjoyed having Helen and Cheryl for dinner last night. I made ham and bean soup, cornbread, a salad, and I made a pineapple cake with cream cheese icing for dessert. It is cold here and getting colder (for Florida) AND we are to have rain most of the day today and off and on through the week. Our winter has arrived.

Thanks for your visit!!  Enjoy your Sunday!

Peace & hugs!  God bless!!

My Favorite Things on Saturday 9...

My Favorite Things

BERJAYA
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: My Favorite Things (2018)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This week's artist, Jennie Abrahamson, is very happy living in Stockholm, but she refers to Paris as "a flirt." She enjoys her time there so much she always wants to return. Is there a place you've visited that tugs at your heart and imagination, tempting you to return?  Tuscany. Loved it.

2) Jennie has said her music has been heavily influenced by 80s pop, which was popular in her early teen years. Are your favorite songs the ones you listened to when you were growing up?  Definitely. Love 60s music.

3) "My Favorite Things" is from The Sound of Music. Crazy Sam's high school claim to fame was playing Sister Margaretta in the senior class production. Though not a big part, her performance lives on because relatives love embarrassing her with pictures of her in an especially unflattering nun's habit. Who took an embarrassing photo of you? What were you doing?  I am nearly always a behind-the-scenes kind of person and am usually taking the pictures. I haven't seen one that I am embarrassed about.  Maybe someone else has one of me...

4) The lyrics celebrate "brown paper packages tied up in strings." What was in the last box you received in the mail?  Baby gifts for two friends, from Amazon.

5) It mentions doorbells and sleigh bells. What's the most recent bell or alarm that you heard?  This morning at 6:00 a.m. because it is a work day for me this Saturday.

6) This song has nice things to say about cold weather, specifically snowflakes, and mittens. What do you like about winter?  I am not a winter person and find that even 50 degrees in Florida is "freezing" to me!

7) Dog bites and bee stings are singled out as things that can leave us feeling sad. What's most recently given you the blues?  Getting up at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday kind of gives me the blues but I'll have a 3-day weekend coming up!

8) In 2018, when this song was released, Roger Federer won the Australian Open. Are you good with a racket?  What kind of racket?  LOL  No, I don't play tennis or badminton anymore and I have never run numbers. (wink)

9) Random question -- Your local zoo announced the hatching of three snowy owlets. All males. You won the honor of naming them. Go ahead.  Winky; Hootie; Owlbert

Since we didn't go to the farm (Joe's client) today, I told Joe that I needed to get a few photos to share today so we stopped at Lake Morton, which is Lakeland's bird sanctuary.

There were pelicans gathered on the bank on around the curve above but there was no place to park so I could get a good picture.  The pelicans and the storks always fascinate me, but the swans, geese, ducks. anhingas and egrets are also fun to see.

When I got off work yesterday, I stopped in to help a neighbor finish the HOA February newsletter.  She had some major surgery last week and put out a plea for some help to get the newsletter finished. She works in Publisher and I've used it before so we worked together to get it done. She said no one else responded. I was happy to help and it has been sent to the printer. She told me she started doing the newsletter when her husband died a few years ago so she would have something to do. She does a great job for us!  Her daughter is staying with her right now to help.

Okay, some of you will think this is gross but is anyone else watching a show called Dr. Pimple Popper?  She is a dermatologist and helps people with some pretty terrible skin problems. Joe and I got hooked on it.  We both like Untold Stories in the ER and other medical shows like that. I guess we are weird.

I'm doing laundry and cleaning today (my day off) and have to work tomorrow.  Our Saturdays are always busy so I'll be happy for 12:30 to arrive.

Thanks for your visit today!  Peace & hugs!  God bless!

Thankful Thursday with Rebecca Jo...

Share your thankful list over at Knit by God's Hand where Rebecca Jo hosts a link-up full of gratitude!  Thanks, Rebecca Jo!

BERJAYA

**  I am thankful for my part-time job. I am not necessarily happy about being back at work but the doctor I work for is very nice, his patients really like him, and I really enjoy talking with some of them. God is good!  Thank you, Jesus!

**  I am thankful for my sisters!! Patti called this week and suggested that perhaps this summer she and Greg will drive down and stop in Georgia to pick up Tammy and Bruce and come on down here for a visit.  All three of us 'girls' haven't been together for a long, long time. Not sure what kind of trouble we might get into!!  Sure hope it works out for them to come!  I'm excited!!

**  When I got home yesterday, Joe said his client had to cancel our weekly trip to the farm because of illness. Tests are being done this week, including a colonoscopy so we don't need to be there while they are dealing with that.  We have the week off. I'm not thankful for the health issues, but I really didn't mind having the afternoon back.  I made chicken & rice soup and biscuits for our dinner. Thankful for extra time and thankful for a full pantry. Praise God.

**   I am thankful that we will finally be seeing Joe's cardiologist on Monday. Praise God again!

**  I am thankful for my vacuum cleaner.  There is cat hair EVERYWHERE lately. EVERYWHERE!

**  I am thankful for your visit today and for your friendship here!!

Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!

The Wednesday Medley is Pie-full...

BERJAYA

Welcome to the Wednesday Medley!!  If you answer the
questions on your blog, please link-up below to share with others!

NATIONAL PIE DAY – January 23

NATIONAL PIE DAY

National Pie Day is celebrated annually on January 23rd. (Not to be confused with March 14 which is PI Ï€ Day.)
National Pie Day was created simply to celebrate the pie.  It is a day for all to bake or cook their favorite pies.  Even more importantly, it is a day set aside for all to enjoy eating pies!
The first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age.

1.  Okay, fess up.  Tell us your top three favorite pies, please.  Will you have some pie today?  #1 Coconut Custard; #2  Chocolate; #3  Butterscotch.  I don't think I will have any pie today, but several restaurants are giving away free pie to celebrate and we have a Village Inn right down the street from us...
2.  While we are talking about food... are you a picky eater or are you ready to try almost any new food?  I am not a picky eater.  What is the worst thing you have ever eaten?  Escargot.
3.  Baking could be considered an art as could cooking.  How do you define art?  Art is a form of communication.  It's that simple (in my mind).
4.  Tell us a really stupid joke that made you laugh, please.  Why could the lifeguard not save the drowning hippie?  He was too far out, man!
5.  January 23rd is also National Handwriting Day. Do you have nice handwriting?  I have been told that my handwriting is nice. Did cursive writing come naturally or did you practice in those double-lined practice books until your fingers hurt?  I did practice but probably not until my fingers hurt.  My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Gablehouse, made the prettiest Gs when she wrote her name. I worked at it until mine was as pretty as hers. In fifth-grade, Mrs. Whittington did make us practice our cursive letters on lined paper.

BERJAYA

6.  Tell us something random about your week.  We are at the farm this afternoon, but that's pretty standard and not random.  This Saturday we have a chili cook-off at the Clubhouse. At last count, there were 17 people making chili and we, the eaters, get to choose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  Should be yummy and fun. I swiped (well, she shared it) Mari's award-winning chili recipe thinking I might join the chili chefs but I decided to just be a taster this year. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your visit today!! If you answered the Medley on your blog, please link up below so we can all visit each other!!
Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!
