Hello,
For my first post into this community, I'll post photos of my cruise from Belgium (Antwerp, more precisely) to Denmark (Aalborg) this month, and the beautiful ships I saw (and sailed on) there. We first had a race (we finished third behind the other Norwegian ships) and then we stopped in a little port (Halmstad) with the other Norwegian ships before joining the other ships in Aalborg.

Sultana's Downrigging Weekend 2009 [Nov. 28th, 2009|08:33 pm]

I went down to Chestertown this year aboard the Kalmar Nyckel, so I had the opportunity to take lots of photos. I love working on tallships, but it's always a little sad to be the only one in the area. Chestertown was wonderful--the most tallships I've ever seen together. I also got to sail with a couple other ships, namely Sultana and Pride.

There's more information available on the Sultana's website.

I took a bunch of photos while I was on the Kalmar Nyckel this season. The first two photos are in St. Mary's City, MD; the next three in Philadelphia, and the third in Chestertown, MD.

Kalmar Nyckel is 141' sparred, 93' overall, 91' on deck, 89' at waterline, 25' beam, 12.5' draft. I think her rig height is 105', or 64' when the topmasts are housed (we have to house topmasts in order to go home to Wilmington, DE, because of the I-495 bridge, so we get lots of practice). She's properly called a Dutch pinnace, replica of a ship built around 1625, but mostly it's easier to call her a full-rigged ship.

I volunteered on Lady Washington for a month or so this summer. I had the fortune of sailing with the Hawaiian Chieftain for one battle sail, so I got some nice photos of the Lady (plus an as-yet-unrequited crush on the Chieftain. She's a lovely boat!).

An accidental photo :)

One and All

I was down in Hobart on the weekend and right over on the far side of the Sullivans Cove (I was on Prince Wharf, near Salamanca for those familiar with the city) there were a few remaining Sydney to Hobart finishers biding their time. I could see a couple of masts that didn't look like a yacht's but little else. So I put the camera on max resolution and took a photo on the off-chance I might be able to make out enough to maybe identify it at home. I was expecting a fancy pleasure boat though :)

I saw just the tops of the sails when she came into the Bay a couple weeks ago, then she was docked over in Sausalito...you could see the masts distinctly from SF. Yesterday she motored over to dock at Pier 35 (west side).

I was very sad to learn that the Asgard II, the 30-metre Irish sail training brigantine, was lost off the French coast. She began to take on water rapidly during the night, and the decision was made to abandon ship. All crew are safe and taken care of.
