... And to be perfectly frank? I very nearly didn't, because it took three tries before Firefox could give me more than a "we couldn't find that page" for the DW shop.

And DW has been like this for months now. Pages not loading; replies to posts not loading; comment threads not expanding. Sometimes over and over so much I have to close a post and go back, which is annoying as fuck and also doesn't always work anyway.

bitching about DW and Denise )

I've pivoted from a (clunky, never did get the bugs out) IRC server to setting up a private Discourse server, which looks like it'll offer a lovely package of forums(!), ability to assign private forums(!!), and a perfectly suitable chat function including Markdown and emojis and file uploads, with private chat(!!!).

So when Discord chokes and dies and this place becomes unusable, a backup has been acquired. It's going to cost me more than the IRC server but right this second I do not fucking care. I'll pass a plate if I have to.

This goes right alongside the pantry preparations and whatnot that we've been slowly accumulating when possible for the last ~month, because believe you me the global economic shock is coming. (also fuck the US and may Israel become a crater.)

Aside from all this it's been playing FFVII (although I've fallen half off the trolley there atm), actually enjoying a few mobile games for the moment, and digging into my Alternity sourcebooks and letting the scifi wash over me. And I got some progress on the FF Lindwyrm project.

I'd still like to make a zine at some point. And put another box together. Small steps.

So YSST kicked off this week and I must say I was pleasantly surprised! Not that the episode was good -- all signs pointed to this project looking pretty damn good -- but that it actually left me excited to see what the fuck is happening. Also that it raises Many Questions[tm] if you've been around the block for decades but kicks off in such a way that watching it without having seen YST is fine, which is good.

Nasti being right there is also Good and lol props to Sunrise for keeping her under wraps right up until just as (after?) the first episode aired, lolololol --

Hopefully it can keep up as it began. It's absolutely seriously not taking itself seriously, except when it does, which is everything I could ask for in a start.

one growing suspicion I had over the promo months panned out (and how!), I wonder about the bigger red-string-and-pins suspicion even more now ...

Meanwhile in a continued Series Of Sure Coincidences Lolsobwhat, I decided to shell out and get me an omg.lol account the same day Denise started screeching about LJ's imminent demise (and not not~ long after Denise annoyed the fuck out of me wrt Dreamwidth, last month); now the day I activated my account on omg.lol's irc server, Discord is preparing to go public and is filing for a public offering.

Well, a major reason I was interested in omg.lol specifically was its irc (and other similar things), so time to dig around even more and prepare I suppose --

Whether waiting for Neatnik to finish its webhosting plans to go along with omg.lol or finally getting around to Neocities or Nekoweb or something, I need to get on with that. Maybe I can even pull it off before the year is over? Maybe?

I'm gonna take the YSST win, though. Yep.

A few months ago, via family things, I came into some money and was told as long as a certain portion was socked away, it was mine, do what I want with it. Said portion was dutifully socked away, and I've proceeded to spend several months careening around screaming like an opossum that I'm managing to Do It Wrong while making preorders/Kickstarters for books I thought I've have to miss, making a number of donations on a few occasions, tackling the holidays better ...

... finally buying a new vacuum and a bunch of other household/wardrobe necessities >.> ...

And am still sitting on the majority, stressed and anxious because Spending The Money.

Then it came to my attention that Arcade1UP may be defunct and I was egged on by several enablers pulled the trigger on a long wished-for thing that was by no means cheap but. But.

But now I have a 3/4-size assemble-myself Pac-Man cab on the way.

The other games on it will be nice (Galaxian! Galaga!) but it is first and foremost a Pac-Man cab. Sized like it was made for me.

I don't know if the brainweasels will even get me as much as usual, because this is something I have wanted very nearly my entire bloody life.

... who am I kidding I live to be guilty and miserable

But.

Arcade Pac-Man. With a joystick. omfg.

We have a new Classic Mega Man announced! Mega Man Dual Override!

... predictably the fans are being the most stupid whining motherfuckers ever to not be mercifully drowned in a toilet bowl. *lies flat*

Apparently this isn't the only thing coming down the pike, though, according to Protodude:

"So, what I can say:

This project has been in development on and off for a couple of years. It is not Taisen. It is, and at one point was titled, Mega Man 12. It was originally planned to be announced earlier this year, as far back as spring.

It is a keystone project for the 40th anniversary. Not the only one, but a big one.
"

Spose I'll keep a sliver of thought and hope alive for X9 or anything X-series tbh, but we'll see -- Capcom deciding Mega Man is going to be upjumped to a core IP could mean just Classic, or ...

Every time I feel even the slightest frisson of "I should at least post more and those posts should be more ~fandom", (ao3/dw/tumblr-centric) (transformative) fandom reminds me why no, actually, "fandom" can fuck itself, lol.

The last two months or so have been especially remindering!

What with

- the Relationshipping/Mod Cabal discord server horseshit (that poor recip) and the circling of the wagons to protect all those fuckhole exchange mods

- the sniveling cowardly and greedy fuck rampaging across [community profile] fandomgiftbasket (because they want their gifts nownownow)

- the other sniveling cowardly fuck (who clearly thinks too much of themselves and of fandom) who decided to scurry away to FFA to sniff instead of actually engaging with opinions (ahahaa did you think one of us wouldn't see you)

just off the top of my head --

Yeeahhhh I'm good. I'm going to keep on just randomly posting to show I'm not dead and periodically adding stuff to [community profile] loneknight, and fuck ~*Fandom*~. Always knew it was a cesspool; seeing more and more accelerating evidence of that these days.

(that said, props to the folks who also decided the sniveling fuck having a tantrum on [community profile] fandomgiftbasket can fuck themselves, and all tossed in to fill baskets. you folks are good folks yo.)

Lol. Fukkin lol.

Okie so when I said on [community profile] fandom50challenge I probably wouldn't be posting as much this month I didn't actually mean I'd be falling off the trolley altogether, but here we are? It's kind of been a possum scream couple of weeks.

This post is for a different kind of possum scream though!

The fannish kind where I go "Sunrise are you actually seriously putting new canon material for a Gundam setting into a goddamn mobile game?!" -- and honestly the mobile part isn't even what's getting me! If it was a bog standard console G Generation game I'd be just as fucking baffled!

(the timing is dumb as balls because it's for Cosmic Era and SEED Freedom was last year; I blame how delayed G Generation Eternal was)

But yeeeaaaahhhh filling in, apparently-supposedly, what Kira was doing and what Athrun was doing between SEED and SEED Destiny -- as opposed to SEED Eclipse, which is also between series but is about a new cast altogether -- and it's stuffed in a bloody SD G Generation game.

A mobile one at that.

I guess arguably being a mobile game actually makes it more accessible to fans ...?

Still. What the actual fuck.

Also where is my fucking new Wing material in this 35th anni Banrise where the fuck is it
taichara: (pissing off strangers)
It's not secret (except that I barely post about Granblue online, but whatever *shhhh ~*) that I've been eyeing Granblue Fantasy's degeneration over the last stretch of years for ... almost exactly that stretch of years.

(also fucking depressingly hilarious was summer past and me + [personal profile] kalloway spending a weekend picking our way through three years of Granblue flagging where and when we estimated the rot started -- and then the Grand Reveal that oh, there was a new director! and surprise! he'd actually already been doing the work behind the scenes for ... about three years as of then. aka exactly where we pinpointed the cliff.)

Anyway this isn't about that, it's about me now eyeing the festering pit that is this year's anniversary + the leadup + etc, tightening the screws on my tinhat, and layout my cards about how it looks like hints trickling out that GBF is fucked.

(prognostication not guaranteed.)

gazing into my crystal ball of stupid ... )

Whether or not anything plays out like the above, I do think the game's days are numbered. And sure I've been saying that for just over a year -- but beginning of 2024 I was saying they should end it, and start fresh. Now I'm saying it's actively fucking dying if not dead and just hasn't realized it yet.

2024 being a "year of celebration" ahahahahaha fucking lol.

I'm sure I've forgotten some of my recent commentary; I'm sure it'll come up again eventually.

Baaaah.
taichara: (Spudiroth)
When FFVII Ever Crisis launched two Septembers ago finally I was absolutely onboard with it, because sure I'll go through VII and Crisis Core in a version adapted for my phone -- but the big draw was the First SOLDIER storyline that went alongside them.

Actually, now I'm going to sidetrack with a bit of clarification for the audience at home, because a year and a half on and people still keep fucking this up despite the information being right there:

The First SOLDIER storyline in FFVII Ever Crisis is not the same goddamn thing as the actual game (now defunct) called FFVII: The First SOLDIER. Said game was a make-your-own-PC first party shooter with no plot (but cool chocobos). The FS storyline in EC is an actual storyline. The sole connection is that three would-be SOLDIERs from the FS trailer are the majority of the cast (oh and Lucia does get a namecheck when FFVII: TFS closed and your PC graduates).

-- but this is also relevant because the FS storyline put into Ever Crisis for the ~first year or so was, actually, really fucking good.

I honestly wasn't expecting much, because "ooohhh come see young Sephiroth" waved more red flags than a flag store. I was wrong, and it was really, really well done --

First SOLDIER story part 01 commentary )

... and then the first anniversary of the game rolled around and a giant steaming shit was taken on everything.

I could bitch a lot (a lot) about the other factors, like the jawdroppingly awful softcore bullshit that was the anni outfits, and more and more pushing playerscore bignums, and etc etc; but we're here for me bitching about the story walking off a cliff.

So.

(an aside: the game started off also giving us character multi-chapter mini-storylines. we started with Tifa, Aerith and Cloud. partway through the first year they added Barret's, which wrecked my shit. there's been none since. I don't think this is a coincidence.)

So with the first FS storyline wrapped up, it was time for another! Which kicked off post-first anni.

It features Spudiroth and a young Angeal and it is the worst fucking thing.

On top of, frankly, just deeply, shockingly poorer writing as a technical thing all around, this staggering mess (which is taking place in east-buttfuck-nowhere Wutai):

First SOLDIER story part 02 commentary )

Herd of teal deer: I don't know what the fuck changed after the first anniversary of Ever Crisis, but it shot the game in the head (finances are proving that!) and, worse, it's fucking up everything because the writing quality yeeted itself so fast into the sun it left speedlines.

And I'm goddamn mad because it was so good. Just. Goddamnit.
taichara: (Aurora Princess)
I don't have much to say personally aside from 2) this is the dumbest winter ever, 2) fuck the universe, 3) zine(s) eventually I hope.

That said, I feel the need to point out that this year, the year of our dude 2025:

- the 30th anniversary of Gundam Wing beginning to air in Japan is 25 April.

- the 25th anniversary of Gundam Wing beginning to air in the West is 06 March.

You're welcome.

I should do something about it. Maybe even a zine or two.

I should make a zine of that Frozen Teardrop fic I wrote for a bigbang just to annoy the fuck out of people, even if I shouldn't use the art
taichara: (field)
I feel like at this stage giving a full-throated fuck you to the entire miserable universe is the only thing left, but alas here we are.

Having set aside learning PICO-8 for the time being because Stressed As Fuck, I've started chewing on a pile of games all at once -- and by a pile of games I mean a wild-ass collection of Final Fantasy IV hacks (Free Enterprise seeds, FFC2 [bonus, also a FFII alternate universe], and I have Unmitigated Crisis, Darkness Within and Ultima lined up) and many Fire Emblem translations (Heroes Of Light [Mystery Of The Emblem]), demakes (Sacred Echoes), and hacks/retellings (Princess' Lament, Sacred Trilogy ...). And reading Fire Emblem novels.

I am between one and the other chewing on two versions of Gaiden/Echoes and three of Sacred Stones simultaneously. Might get to four, depending on how I feel, but nerfing Seth into the ground makes me cranky so Reforged may not join the list. I'm playing a remake of Dark Dragon in Sacred Stones engine and now might just go ahead and play the version that's in Mystery as "The War Of Shadows" before moving on to "The War Of Heroes" ...

None of this counts the chewing on everything from FFVII to Joust occasionally.

It's not getting Romancing SaGa 2 played either.

Whatever. Final Emblem Fire Fantasy time.
taichara: (Avenir)
Day Seven: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

Here's another place where the too-narrow definition of "fandom" is being unhelpful, to say the least. *snort* I'll also keep the responses deliberately short, because otherwise I could rant forever and I can't waste the energy or the time today --

Fuck bigots, abusers and chuds as well as their enablers. I generally stick with something forever once I pick it up -- but pop that shit out and I'm fucking gone. Be known for it and I'll never start. Some examples: Knave (fuck me for finding out after paying for everything), Rurouni Kenshin, or wanting to interact with anything Toru Furuya touched (which makes my main Gundam a problem and it isn't even UC) ...

If one means "fandom" as "fans": I have better things to do than deal with purity culture or edgelordy everything-must-be-kink-or-daaaark-or Problematic[tm]-or-you're-an-anti shit. A fucking pox on both your fucking houses.
taichara: (Lance -- elevator boss }3)
Day Five: What's a fandom that you wish had a bigger following?

You want an honest answer?

None.

Not a single fucking one.

I can't think of a single fandom I've experienced in the last 10-15 years that didn't start circling the drain as soon as people started noticing it for whatever reason (usually because of a new version but not always). No. Just no. Never fucking again.

Ask me what I feel about what my other fandom as old as Transformers is like since 2016 I fucking dare you.

The more that things dear to me fly under the radar the happier I'm going to be from now on.
