Surprisingly, Zach had been the one to bring up the notion of sending Christmas cards that year. He hadn’t sent them when he was living with Jeannie in San Pedro, there hadn’t really been any need then (or money), but he wondered aloud one morning over breakfast whether they should plan on sending out cards now that they were a family.
The question, and the casual way Zach had called them a family, had made Shaun’s throat close up, and it had taken him a few seconds to get out his agreement. Zach’s smile, a little bit pleased, a little bit shy, had made Shaun’s heart (and other body parts) swell. After Cody had gone off to play with Jane, Shaun had slowly stripped Zach of all his clothes (the same way Zach had stripped Shaun of all his defenses) and shown him exactly how much the offhand comment had meant to him.
Two weeks later a friend of Shaun’s had taken a couple pictures of the three of them at the beach. They’d chosen to use the photo of them standing on their surf boards, wearing only board shorts and santa hats. Shaun looked at the picture now, carefully stuffed into one of those picture cards. The water behind them was bluer than Shaun remembered, and all three of them had huge smiles on their faces as they pretended to surf the sand.
They’d decided to make sending cards a family endeavor, with Cody sliding the pictures into the cards, Zach addressing the envelopes, and Shaun filling out the cards. He glanced around at the other two, studiously doing their assigned tasks. His heart full to bursting with love, Shaun set pen to card and wrote
Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year!
