Or, I watched Good Omens. I actually watched it right after it came out. Not the day but within a few days. And… I loved it? It’s strange, because I didn’t expect to. It’s probably my least favorite Gaiman book. But still, I was looking forward to watching the series. I expected to enjoy it, but I didn’t expect to love it. And I’m also one of the people who thought David Tennant and Michael Sheen looked kind of ridiculous in the stills that were released way back there, but in motion the costumes and the whole getup worked. Like, I don’t know, I really, really liked it. Someone else said it first, but it’s almost less an adaptation and more a translation, considering one of the originals authors was the writer and showrunner. Though that’s not to say some things weren’t changed, because they were. But it all worked for me. I started it, watching one or two episodes, but by the end of episode three, I settled in to binge it to the end.
Part of my enjoyment, I’m sure, is the fact that Aziraphale and Crowley were my favorite parts of the book, and their roles are expanded in the show. I liked all the other characters as well, there was no one I disliked (I really liked Anathema and I also liked Adam. So props to the show, because I never liked Adam in the book or in the audio book.), but I loved Aziraphale and Crowley. I love their whole relationship, and will probably go on at length about it later. They are at the very least epic best friends and at the very most desperately in love. I personally read them as extremely ace and head over heels in love with each other. (So all of the smutfic is lost on me in this fandom, but we can’t have everything.) The longing glances, the dashing rescues, the six thousand year long friendship, the final them-against-Heaven-and-Hell team up—they clearly cannot live without each other. Though Aziraphale is really the one who has to come round to this, and stop denying that they’re friends whenever his loyalties are feeling divided, because Crowley has been there from day one. But Aziraphale eventually does, and a large part of his growth as a character is letting go of some things and opening up to others. P.S. Aziraphale has always been Crowley’s ride or die.
Anyway. I have fallen down the hole of Good Omens on Tumblr (and let’s be real, I have already reblogged every Hannibal gif in existence by this point). I’ve also fallen into reading fanfic, and there is a massive amount being produced. Good Omens was released basically 45 days ago, and just under the “Good Omens TV” tag on AO3, right now, there are 5700 works. IN 45 DAYS. That’s about 125 new works a day; it’s kind of mind boggling. The steam will run out eventually, but it’s not going to be anytime soon.
But also, I started writing a fic. I wasn’t going to, it just happened. And as usual, it happened because I was reading a fic (well, several fics) and thought, “I enjoy this trope, but I would do it like this…” and then, well, you know. I’m kind of rushing to get it done before someone else has the same idea.

Date: 16 July 2019 09:43 am (UTC)And when I haven't worked back an extra 2.5 hours, I'm going to come back and squee about Good Omens because, honestly, it's such a lovely fannish show right now and I'm so utterly in love with the series.

Date: 16 July 2019 01:48 pm (UTC)The book was very much an ensemble cast, but Aziraphale and Crowley were the people and the relationship that everyone latched onto. Over the years, the authors have been questioned more about Aziraphale and Crowley than any other aspect of the novel. In everyone's minds (including Gaiman's), those two gained an importance they weren't originally intended to have, and so the TV adaptation made them the central characters, and that feels absolutely true to the book because that's what everyone remembers about the book. It makes everyone concerned very happy indeed :-)
I did really enjoy the TV series and I've watched it twice, and read whatever fic floats across my dash, but I'm not going to get really fannish about it. I think for me that's because the relationship is already all there on screen, so it's not eating at me saying it needs to be taken somewhere else? Anyway, good luck with your writing!

For me, it's not so much that I need it to be taken somewhere else, but I just want MORE of them, so fanfic it is!
