Jan. 11th, 2024 10:33 pmI'm literally crying right now. Angela Bassett won a lifetime achievement award Oscar (since she was robbed of an actual Oscar on multiple occasion). But her speech was so beautiful. If she wanted to start a church, I would attend services.
(Side note: she's 65?! WTF?! She looks 20 years younger. At least.)
But definitely watch her speech. It is beautiful and joyous, and so amazing.

Dec. 4th, 2023 10:36 pmIn other news, my great-aunt Ruth died recently. Here is her obituary. I did not know her, other than meeting her a couple of times at family gatherings. My dad said that her kids were informed that she was failing, and when they arrived at her house, she was ensconced on her chair, drinking a glass of wine.
Recently, my aunt was going out to Colorado, and offered to take my grandpa to visit his sister, and he jumped at the chance. My great-aunt Jean went, too. Dad brought Grandpa back to Nebraska, and he said that it was good to see her, because he wouldn't make it to her funeral. Dad thought it was morbid at the time, but now thinks it was prescient.
So, glass up for my great-aunt Ruth, who remained at home until her death and went out with a glass of wine and her family around her. May we all be so blessed.

Nov. 16th, 2023 10:42 pmIn completely separate news, did anyone else watch The Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix? I finished it today, and while I thought some episodes were uneven, the casting of Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell as the Usher twins was fabulous. Bruce Greenwood has always been able to go from kindly to menacing at the drop of a dime, and Mary McDonnell can do the same. Plus, Mark Hamill as the family attorney, and all the deaths? And Carla Gugino? So great. Carl Lumbly? Great. Malcolm Goodwin, great.

KE HUY QUAN WON A GOLDEN GLOBE!
I loved him in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and also in The Goonies. He was the moral and emotional center of Everything Everywhere All At Once. He was so brilliant and so lovely, and to see him be recognized is so amazing. I don't think he'll win an Oscar, but if he did, it would be well deserved.
And Angela Basset won too! Brilliant. I have such a girl-crush on her. And her role in the Black Panther movies is gorgeous.
