Day 7: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Vid: Joe Flanigan in 2007 at the Stargate Atlantis Con in Burbank, answering the most important question of the day: "How do you get your hair to stick up like that?"

And he's such a good sport about it! He does sound effects. He does voices. He makes little sproingy motions with his fingers. He says "industrial strength polymer" in a way that's too cute for words. He just seems really comfortable talking about himself, which surprised me the first time I saw it. Because John Sheppard is a known weirdo. Awkward, kind of a loner. Stares a lot. Sometimes we attribute this to Joe Flanigan's inability to successfully mimic a human being. And sometimes we forget Flanigan's there at all because John Sheppard is so fucking weird it seems impossible that it could be intentional. But it is. So it's good to see Joe Flanigan being a human being and reminding us that, for whatever reason, he made the choice to portray John Sheppard the way he did, creating a character so uncomfortable with himself, and the world around him, that we couldn't help but love him. Joe. ♥

J.flan's going to be on Major Crimes tonight, at 9/8c on TNT.

The episode's called All In, and the investigation centers around an exclusive country club, so maybe we'll get Joe playing golf. Or tennis! A girl can dream.

Day 11: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much.

Stargate SG-1 has this episode called Nightwalkers that is so reminiscent of The X-Files I can't help but love it. It's set in a misty small town, the inhabitants are close-knit and suspicious, there's a diner. SG-1 rolls into town in a sensible rental sedan, all of them wearing trenchcoats and sunglasses and asking questions that make people nervous. There's weird things afoot! People are seen out walking at night, but have no memory of it the next morning! Local law enforcement is unhelpful. SG-1 checks into a tiny motel. There's a stakeout. They uncover something they shouldn't! They're separated! Someone abducts Sam from the hotel! SG-1 trusted the wrong person! THERE'S ALIENS. THE TOWNSPEOPLE ARE ALL ALIENS [sic]. But Sam outsmarts them all. The entire town is quarantined. Martial law. Except the next morning all the evidence of aliens is gone! Maybe, it's been a while since I watched it. But you see where I'm headed.

Basically Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie couldn't have set out to make an X-Filelier episode if they tried. I also super love the Fringe episode, Northwest Passage, for the same reasons. Mostly involving misty small towns, evergreen forests, and cheap motels. It brings me back to my youth.

I wasn't going to watch this, not even for David Hewlett, but someone returned it at the library and I had it in my hand and I decided to just check it out myself so I wouldn't have to shelve it.

Turns out I already saw most of Hewlett's part in this in a trailer on Blastr back when the movie was being promoted. It will surprise no one that Hewlett plays an asshole -- a shouty, wild-eyed, mouth-breathing asshole -- but this time he's the kind of asshole that spoiler ) He also wears a sleeveless shirt in one scene.

The rest of the movie? It worked as a prequel, but the apes were the most interesting part. The humans were all uniformly boring. I never bought James Franco as a hotshot biochemist or whatever his deal was because he's just too young and pretty and kind of vacant looking. Sorry, James Franco. James Franco's Character's Veterinarian Girlfriend was also boring. She was also one of only three women in the entire movie. One of five, if you count the chimps. Their jobs were, in order of appearance: Nurse, Laboratory Test Subject/Mother, Veterinarian/Girlfriend, Landlady, Inmate/Laboratory Test Subject. Wait wait wait! I forgot two women! The only two women to be on screen at the same time! They were Dates. So, five women in total, seven if you count the apes. Thus ends my examination of feminism in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Conclusion: There isn't any.

Fandom bonus: DRACO. I didn't even realize it was Tom Felton until I saw his name in the credits. He was all scuzzy and American, but still playing a bully.

I watched The Whistleblower today, just for David Hewlett. He plays a corrupt, unlovable asshole, and looks good doing it, trim and stubbly and confident. I believe he utters the phrase "goat fuck" at some point? It's not the worst thing I've ever watched for love, but the subject matter is brutal. And then I'd remember that it's based on true events, and it got even more depressing.

I knew when I picked it up that I was signing on for, like, four minutes of Hewlett and a hundred and ten minutes of rape and human trafficking, but then who should show up but Benedict Cumberbatch! He was playing an American, except he couldn't entirely rid himself of his English burr and ended up sounding more Mid-Western Irish than anything. His role was even smaller than David's, and almost completely pointless. But there you go; Surprise Cumberbatch.

I watched the first two hours of Alcatraz last night. It's no LOST. It's like, half a LOST. Like a show that's going to raise a lot of questions it probably can't answer and also uses the spooky arpeggio sound effect that LOST stole from The X-Files. But I'll probably keep watching as long as I have nothing else to do. I like the partnership of the blonde female cop and Jorge Garcia. Also, Sam Neill. Who is not old enough for the role he's playing, but still twice as old as the woman he's supposedly dating.

IMDb asks, Did You Know?:
Even though the show is set in San Francisco, and some of the pilot was filmed in the city and on Alcatraz itself, the producers of the show opted to film the rest in Vancouver, mainly because of the much more attractive production rebates than California and the city of San Francisco could offer, much to the chagrin of the San Francisco film industry.
I did know! Because the first hour had Carson in it, and here is a surprise, he doesn't die. And the second hour had Kavanagh. If all goes according to plan, we should see Zelenka soon, and I thought I spotted Sanctuary's Adam Worth on the wall of mugshots. So that's something to look forward to, a nice game of Spot the Vancouver Actor.

Our two favorite Hewletts are at it again. David and Kate are making a new series called Assassidate, and the first three-minute episode is up on YouTube now. It's so good to see their faces again, even if David's is...well, you'll see.

Watch it, like it, and favorite it to show your support. They're pitching the idea next week and need numbers to show how much we love them.

Rage of the Yeti: David is adorable, the green screen effects, less so. And it surprises me to say this about a SyFy Original, but it actually made a lot of sense! The creatures were consistent. Their behavior was the same throughout the movie and they didn't acquire any new and baffling powers in the fourth act. Some of the characters had personalities! The dialogue was not terrible! I'm sure you understand that this is high praise for a SyFy Original. Even if that one girl recovered from her pneumothorax with startling speed and little to no medical attention. Or that I was forced to ask, "Which one is the smart brother?"

David gets to play a smooth, silly billionaire and it suits him. There's an entire scene shot from the foot of his beach lounger where I was transfixed by the bottom of his feet, his wiggling toes.

Also, Yancy Butler! For whom I have leftover affection from Witchblade.

So, if you missed it, I'm sure SyFy is possibly still running it even now, in between airings of Abominable and Yetigeddon and Ice Whale. They sure do love a theme day. Also, I made up two of those titles, but, come on, YETIGEDDON? They need to get on that, stat.

In case you somehow missed @dhewlett mentioning his new movie six or seven times a minute, Rage of the Yeti will air Saturday, Nov 12, on SyFy at 9pm (ET/PT). This is the thing that used to be the evil snow monkeys, but was never Morlocks, though I can be excused for thinking so because they both contain snow, Bulgaria, and monkeys of a sort.

Also, P.S., I am not enjoying the AO3's new look. I want the old skin back; I got used to its ugliness! And the new one's too narrow for my monitor. And I don't like the font. But I just got finished fixing Pinboard and the AO3 code is way too complicated for my degenerate hacking skills and I don't have any css spoons left. FANDOM HARD.

Joe looked so good on Fringe tonight! Also I think we saw more of his skin in those opening three minutes than we did during five years of Stargate. His little legs!

Joe-related Fringe spoilers )

Anyway, it was great to see him on my tv again. And, tomorrow, David's evil snow monkey movie is on SyFy at 9pm; it's called Morlocks and also stars Robert Picardo.

Edit: I was wrong! Morlocks is not the evil snow monkey movie. Instead, Morlocks is a movie about morlocks. The evil snow monkey movie doesn't have a title or a release date.

One of David Hewlett's latest tweets:
Learned about beekeeping, dug spuds and picked apples from the garden for a pork loin dinner... yes, I have officially become Jamie Oliver.
This makes me happy for a variety of reasons, starting with bees (my tin hat says this must have something to do with Joe!) and ending with naked chefs.

Poor Joe, he got stuck in the ubiquitous Indian Revenge ep. No sci-fi show has ever done a good job of that. Buffy's version was funny ("Bear! You made a bear!"), but still factually inaccurate. At least it wasn't the voodoo ep? Poor Joe. Still, he looked hot. That jacket and jeans and white shirt combo never fails. And his FACE. And his dramatic POINTING. Oh, Joe. Yes, I was laughing, but ONLY BECAUSE I LOVE YOU.

Someone needs to submits caps to [livejournal.com profile] face_of_joe because this episode is filled with joeface. He rolls his eyes!

His name, in case we ever need a super rich, Indian artifact collecting Flanigan, is Jeffrey Weaver, and he has a penthouse and daddy issues. He also maybe owns a hospital.

It really is a shame that so many of you had to come in on this episode. The show is usually much smarter and not so much about fetishizing American Indian culture. I swear. Consider giving it another chance? I mean, they didn't even go down into the warehouse this ep! The warehouse is filled with fun things.

And there's Claudia, who continues to be awesome. I love her pointy face. She totally looks like a Kristen Bell/Allison Mack mashup. Am I right?

In case you didn't know, TV Actor Joe Flanigan is going to be on Warehouse 13 tonight. He's wearing a suit, ladies. Also, he runs a little. Remember how ridorkulously Joe Flanigan runs? Maybe he'll yell and his voice will break. Oh, Joe.

Anyway, I think it'll be a good place for him. It's just the right amount of goofy and weirdass. He can use all the things he learned about science fiction while on -- sorry, I just can't say that with a straight face. Joe could single-handedly turn any given episode of SGA into a romantic comedy. And we all know who his love interest was.

I am so off-topic. Um. Warehouse 13. I like it so far. The lead investigators have good friendly chemistry; they're no Mulder and Scully, but that's fine! Sometimes it's nice just to be pals! I want them to continue being pals! I like the warehouse and the gizmos and the characters. Artie is awesome. CCH Pounder is mysterious. Bones' old boyfriend is fun. I'm not sure how I feel about Myka yet. I'm kind of tired of the woman being the uptight one, but she seems to be relaxing a little. The paranormal will do that to you. Just ask Scully.

To sum up: Joe Flanigan! Warehouse 13! Tonight!

The Closer: there was just not enough David! And is his mouth getting even slantier? God, I love him. It's up to us to make sure his character gets a nice showing in future crossovers.

Future crossovers which may or may not feature GAY DANCE PARTIES.

There are so many directions to take this. For the record, it's unlikely that I will be taking any of them. I just like noodling around with the idea. So if you find yourself with, say, a [livejournal.com profile] cliche_bingo card and/or a love for Hewligan and/or some spare time on your hands and/or absolutely no story ideas, try one of these! They're organic.

Warning: All I know about Brendan Dean, I learned from fanfic.

two ways it could go )

The most important thing to keep in mind is this: Brendan Dean looks at Jerry, all neat and clean, his hair parted just so, the knot in his tie perfectly centered against his collar, and Brendan just wants to get him all rumpled and messy.

Hey, sports fans, don't forget David Hewlett's going to be on The Closer tonight at 9pm on TNT. The episode's called Walking Back the Cat and he appears to be playing a nebbishy hardass FBI agent that likes to carry around a lot of paper. You can watch a preview here.

They put a part in his hair, bless him.

Hah, the episode summary!: Brenda and her squad are deputized by the FBI to help investigate a murder involving drug trafficking at gay dance parties.

So now we know how Agent Moore meets Brendan Dean. It's at a gay dance party.

So, it looks like Hewlett's FBI agent will not be kicking down doors and staking out abandoned warehouses. From his tweet today:
Okay no badge or gun, just a suit and a lot of paper to deal with...Paper?! What the hell do you do with paper?!
He's going to be Agent Moore on The Closer (which I actually watch, so yay!), maybe he'll be a nebbishy guy clutching an armful of papers, or an angry hardass...clutching an armful of papers. Now to get Brendan Dean to Los Angeles on a case. OR on a vacation! Except, as befalls all fictional law enforcement officers on vacation, he stumbles onto CRIME and is locked up by the local cops, then hauled in for questioning by the FBI, and is forced to team up with the nebbishy hardass Agent Moore (in charge of all the paperwork) to clear his name! Someone get on this, seriously.

And, in case you didn't see, in my last post on this subject, [livejournal.com profile] chkc left a nice sketch of our boys practicing interagency cooperation. And, yes, it's work safe, it's not nearly as dirty as I made it sound.
runpunkrun: fox mulder behind the wheel of a car, text: wish you were here xoxo (wish you were here)
Ugh, I am sick? Or possibly just female? Whatever it is, I want it to STOP.

Here's a happy thought: According to David Hewlett, his next acting gig might involve him being an FBI agent. As we all know, Joe Flanigan has played many the FBI agent and/or other law enforcement types. It's highly possible their characters might meet up, probably in a seedy diner, or on a stakeout. Just an idea.

ETA: Look look look look: [livejournal.com profile] chck can see it.

So I heard on the intertube that this movie wasn't terrible, which finally made me hunt it down. And it's not terrible. As movies go, Where the Heart Is is wacky yet harmless.

This is, of course, the one where David Hewlett's all tarted up like a cupid. But before we even get to that, there's so much more to appreciate about Hewlett's wardrobe. He's got feathered hair, wears a tiny black fedora with a red feather in it, has a wide assortment of ties (including one very wide tie with what looks like a nude on it), and a pair of tight acid-washed jeans with hearts and words painted on them. A pair of jeans that we later see his sister wearing. Not to mention his bike shorts, his blue suit and red sneaker ensemble, and his odd love of scarves.

David plays Jimmy, who is a freak. A big, giant freak.

Here's what we know about Jimmy:
  • dropped out of Harvard

  • rides a bicycle

  • designs video games

  • thinks computers are "the future of the world"

  • says he can sew

  • called his fashion designer housemate a fag

  • isn't afraid to roll around on the floor of the stock exchange with his pal Tom
And then there are the cupid scenes: his powdered face, his curly blonde hair, his rouged cheeks, his red lips, his hairless chest, his little nipples! The feathered g-string and strap-on wings! Plus he spends a good fifteen minutes running around like that -- even stops to make a phone call and cut the shackles off a homeless magician.

The weirdest thing about this movie, though, was at the beginning I didn't even recognize Hewlett's voice; he sounds so young! But he also might have been putting on a funny voice just to aggravate Dabney Coleman. Either I got used to it or he started talking normally, which brings us to the part where he's tangled in yellow fabric and falling down a staircase and he pops up and starts yelling about how no one warned him there was going to be "Bang-fucking-cock in the hallway." I had to rewind that a couple of times because he really does say "bang-fucking-cock" but, sadly, he's talking about Bangkok, despite how suggestive that sounds. Still, that might come in handy, if anyone ever needs a clip of Rodney McKay saying "fucking cock" for, you know, creative artistic purposes. Cough.
runpunkrun: john sheppard looking like a watercolor (in the springtime of his voodoo)
This weekend I bought a flashdrive for the express purpose of abusing the broadband at my place of work. As I work in a library and the broadband is available to the public, that in itself is not actually abuse. It's the extra long break I took because I was downloading Flanigan clips off YouTube.

I got all twelve of the clips from his big gay appearance in Family Album, but while I was waiting for those to load, the sidebar offered me the option of viewing a clip titled "Joe Flanigan - The Other Sister."

It features him dancing -- and I use the term loosely -- at a wedding. While that's all very hilarious and embarrassing, what I really wanted out of that was a show where Joe Flanigan really was the other sister. Or, ideally, an SGA fic where Sheppard has two older sisters and they like to introduce him to people as "John, my other sister." It's probably an AU, and maybe they go to Catholic school or something (Sheppard in a school uniform! in a blazer and tie! with floppy hair!), and Rodney's tutoring one of the sisters in physics. He hasn't quite gotten rid of Meredith yet ("Meredith, this is my other sister, John.") and John hangs in the kitchen doorway while he's over, watching Rodney and admiring his lush blond hair, his pointy nose, his absolute devotion to science. John's mother works in the family bakery and he probably doesn't have a father and Rodney is awkward and impatient and sometimes John will get home after school and Rodney will be sitting on the steps, grumpy and put out because the sister he tutors is late (and never does show up) and John lets him inside and they eat cookies and fall in love and have sex (though not all at once and probably not in that order) and Rodney wins the state science fair and John decides to go to cooking school and they live happily ever after.
