This is a very beginner-friendly anime that would be great to recommend for anyone interested in fantasy. While Witch Hat Atelier can be a bit slow-paced at times, the show's charming magic system, combined with excellent world-building, keeps the viewer coming back for more.

Plot/Story: 7/10

The overall plot is fairly simple and closely follows the standard hero’s journey structure. The anime chooses to focus on world-building first, letting the story develop as the viewer learns about the world. As a result, at times the show’s pace feels slow and takes on a slice-of-life nature.

I am positively impressed with this anime, i came in expecting slop and it ended up being quite fun!

The female lead is incredibly stupid, but not in a disney way, instead, she feels a lot more real and emotional, she makes mistakes that actually fuck with the male lead quite a lot, given, everything does end up going her way, but that just comes with the territory that 12 episode 1 season shows provide.

100% worth watching in the present day still, the animation, music and story all hold up. Some of the best animation from shaft it has a unique art style that suits it well. If you're looking for a so bad its good anime then this is a good pick. In every other department besides art it fails. Its pacing is pretty bad and I don't really mean how the fast the story progresses that's fine but just the way people talk and conversate in general. I suggest to give it a try to anyone, just great imo and technicaly executed on a really good level.
Characters are kinda pretty flat except for MC, but cuteness and kindness compensates for everything else.
A bit of absurdity helped a story.
Story is kinda unique for nowadays, romantic comedy in a fantasy setting without harems and some nice animations:)

At first glance, Yofukashi might come off as just another coming of age show. It has all of the ingredients to pass off just another work with a high budget but ultimately mediocre contents. But there’s a stark difference between Yofukashi and its contemporaries: it understands the subtleties of what it means to be lost. Especially in one’s youth, when hormones run rampant, the last thing people need in order to find themselves is to have their thoughts drowned out by the noise of rules and regulation which make up daytime society. Yofukashi utilizes the night as a safe haven for these people, granting them ... the quiet solitude needed to truly figure out who they are. The night operates not only as a means of escape from the normal world, but as a reflection of the self, allowing its inhabitants an unexpected form of rehabilitation, putting a fresh perspective on life to help them rediscover what’s so special about it.

Yofukashi’s greatest strength comes in its visuals. Not just because everything looks great but in the way they end up mirroring Kou’s emotional state. Despite nighttime typically being associated with darkness, the world truly comes alive the first time Kou steps out of his apartment and into the world he will soon belong to. All of the cosmos brighten up the night sky, raining down a myriad of colors down onto the silent world below. At night, the world is so bright and full of this kind of purity which cannot be properly appreciated during the daytime, where minute detail is overwhelmed by the overwhelming light of the sun. It becomes so easy to understand why exactly Kou is so enthralled by the night, not only because he sees it as an escape from the monotonous everyday life in which he has no place in, but because it’s a place of pure beauty and stimulation for the imagination. It makes the world fresh.

It’s not as if Kou actually ends up doing anything particularly special during his nighttime excursions either, but the mere act of doing it at night is what makes it special because it allows him to fully appreciate what he’s doing. Even Nazuna, despite being the one teaching him about the wonders of the night, doesn’t actually show him anything particularly out of the ordinary. Most of the time they end up spending together consists of walking around or playing video games rather than actual delinquent behavior. But because the noise provided by society has been turned all the way down these actions are taken in pure isolation, increasing the amount of stimulation and entertainment which can be extracted from them.

Kou and Nazuna’s relationship works in a similar way, while more characters are gradually introduced as the show goes on they’re more or less the only two people in each other’s world. Both Kou and Nazuna are people who don’t actually understand what exactly it means to like someone else so, despite the somewhat transactional basis of their relationship, it makes their development feel all the more natural. You get to see how they start to gradually take up more space in their minds, going from searching for each other merely as a means of entertainment or food to constantly bringing each other up in casual conversation or lines of thought. It’s a very gradual shift but it happens at a steady enough pace, while also not being hammered in enough, to keep things enjoyable.

Of course it helps that they have fantastic chemistry as well, I was pleasantly surprised by how funny this show actually ends up being. Not necessarily in the sense that there’s a lot of jokes, but because of how naturally they end up bouncing off of each other. I found this ends up scaling with the development of their relationship, working as a dual purpose of showcasing how they’re gradually becoming closer and making the show more entertaining. Kou starts to catch up to Nazuna’s quick wit and works as a solid straight man, a technique which he incorporates with his interactions with other denizens of the night. The show settles into a nice comedic groove as it goes on, never taking itself too seriously even when the stakes start to increase, almost emulating the unpredictable ebb and flow of adolescent night life.

This spontaneous unpredictableness ends up being incorporated into the main point of conflict seamlessly. While many people would likely chalk up most of Kou’s early, very impulsive, decisions as just another means of getting the story started, I was pleased to see the show was more than willing to really dial in to his decisions. Much of the later half of the show is spent scrutinizing why exactly he wants to be a vampire, what it is that draws him to the night, and why it has to be Nazuna of all people. It isn’t afraid to address the stage of life that he’s in, being a bundle of hormones going through puberty it’s not difficult to call into question the actual foundation of his logic, and he cannot deny this once it’s brought to his attention. It’s such a refreshing direction for this show to go in because, while it’s not difficult to understand why Kou would, in the moment, decide to get closer to Nazuna, the justification he uses does not hold for many of his later decisions. It truly does feel like something he only did impulsively due to his more confused emotional state than something he truly wants to do, and the show makes him work quite hard to make him sort through this confusion.

This is where the visuals come in again, another very gradual shift. Even before these doubts are fully brought to Kou’s attention, as the show progresses and he incorporates into the night it starts to lose its color. This transition is done so slowly that you won’t notice it’s happening until, suddenly, the world of the night starts to look the same as the day. No longer can you see all of the stars in the sky, the color palette shifts down from vibrant pinks and yellows to this washed out grey, it becomes almost monotonous to look at. While this kind of visual storytelling might seem fairly standard when I describe it here, the effect it has in practice is nothing short of perfect. The visuals suck you into Kou’s world and make it so easy to align your thought process with his. The visual spectacle of the first episode doesn’t necessarily trick you into ignoring his lack of critical thinking skills, but more so allows you to accept them as the correct choice. It’s such a clever method of persuasion via immersion and it ends up elevating the entire experience of the show as a result.

However, while I think the show generally does a very good job at interrogating Kou, not all of its arguments for rehabilitation are created equally. Most notably the regular humans, his “friends” of the daytime Asai and Seki, do not manage to pull their own weight in terms of convincing Kou to return to normalcy. They end up feeling like they were merely slotted into the story rather than playing an active part in it and I was fully expecting Asai to end up being abandoned past her introduction, a decision which would’ve ended up being for the best in my opinion. Neither Asai or Seki truly have a strong connection to Kou, both in their past or in present day interactions, and this discrepancy is even pointed out by Nazuna (and why I initially assumed Kou would sever ties). Neither of them, despite claiming to care or be worried about Kou as his childhood friend, make any sort of great effort to reach out to him and their present day relationship isn’t developed enough to give their words any significant weight. This only truly becomes an issue when they become the voice of “reason” as to why he should return to normalcy rather than stay in the night, as they don’t feel like nearly good enough friends to be truly convincing.

Even assuming their relationship was properly fleshed out, they don’t feel necessary to introduce doubt in Kou’s mind about his activities at night. Much of the source of his doubt comes from events, or people, which he encounters independently from those two which further diminishes their validity. Contrast this with Kou’s slow realization that the night is merely the same world as the day and you begin to realize just how unnecessary those two end up being and the lack of respect the show gives to their relationship. Asai and Seki are trying to fix a problem which does not exist, they think the issue with Kou lies in his delinquent behavior rather than that he feels lost and unsatisfied with life as he knows it. In escaping to the night, a place where he feels uninhibited and free, Kou has finally found a place where he’s comfortable and satisfied.

The daytime represents a strict monotony of rules and regulation, you head to your assigned place to do your assigned behavior at your assigned time before you head home only to do it all over again. If you fail to behave in the way which has been assigned to you, such as failing to reciprocate a confession because you don’t yet understand what love truly is, you’re branded an outcast, someone who can no longer fit in. The daytime is not kind to those who don’t understand who they are yet, it forces you into a mold and if you won’t fit you’ll break. Kou and Nazuna may not do anything particularly special during the night, but it’s ultimately his decision to do so, and that’s what makes it special. It’s a perfect fit for people who are lost in their way of life, giving them opportune time to figure out themselves without the blaring noise of society overshadowing their thoughts.

Yofukashi is a deceptively simple show. While it’s a work which can be easily appreciated without too much thought, it continuously drops subtle crumbs to indicate that this is a much more meticulous work than it lets on at face value. The world of the night operates as a mirror of the characters’ inner world, as they explore it they discover what exactly they want out of life. The world, or rather You, are constantly changing in ways so minute that they can easily go unnoticed, especially in the noisy environment of society which drowns out isolated thought. The night provides a safe haven for those who’ve become lost because of this shift, granting them ample time to figure out who they are. However different their individual circumstances might be, the call of the night appeals to its denizens for the same reason. As Nazuna says in Episode one: “It all boils down to one reason. They aren’t satisfied with how they spent the day.”

I am 2 seasons in and don't know what the main character is doing to drive this story forward. His fight scenes are reduced to one kind of attack and his battle IQ, or lack thereof, makes for an uninteresting watch. His main motivation of finding his mom and saving his brother are, by in large, inconsequential to the plot.

Potential. Potential is the word that really defines this story. Unfulfilled one, and that’s just a shame. The capital sin of the series is the use of nebulous symbolism that ends up confusing the narrative, as it leaves too many open-ended questions. With what information we have, it is impossible to come to our own conclusions. It is a story that is very close to being excellent, but ends up falling short.
I will start with the parts that are not plot related and finish with real problem (the plot)
The visual department is cute. It has that early 2000s simple but effective look that makes ... it fell timeless. Some scenes though feel like they received a lot less detail than others but it does not affect the series negatively.
The music is very good, probably the best aspect, as it helps to transport you into the whimsical world of the Haibae and it is used sparsely and with purpose, helping all of the scenes with an musical arrangement. Even if you do not watch the series check the music as it holds up very well on its own.
Now to the real problem: the narrative and how it fails in untangling the plot.
What the Haibane are, how and why they are born, and what the flight implies are subjects that are lightly explored, but many others more tangential but also important are not. The purpose of the city and the people who live in it, what are the Toga and why can they go beyond the wall, why Haibane are separated into different spaces… So much important stuff has zero explanation and degrades the overall experience from sublime in the first half of the series, where you are shown the place, culture and people, to disappointing when the story turns more character-based, forgetting much of the charm of the world present in the first half.
The problem is that the characters are mostly one-dimensional, and only Reki and Rakka could be said to be properly fleshed out. The rest of the cast sadly fades into the background and feel more like plot devices or calls to action that provoke a change into our main protagonists.
Also, even if most people say the reading here is not religious, I cannot avoid a heavy purgatory-themed world with the characterization of sins and sinners included. I mean Reki is literally called “small stone” (St Peter???) but whatever, I may be biased, although it would not be the first time that Japanese writers read the bible like we read the odyssey and create a non-religious retelling of it.
My conclusion is: if you watch series for the aesthetics, this one will be very enjoyable, if you prefer well structured, logical stories, you will leave confused (like me). However, as it is quite short and has some good qualities to it, you might enjoy it for what it is. Abeautiful tale with lots of questions and no certainties.

Man, I really wanted to like this anime. Like, genuinely. I went in after seeing the trailers. Gorgeous art, that classic Miyajima style from Rent A Girlfriend, a big family of attractive siblings in a fancy Tokyo mansion. Sounded like it could be a fun, messy rom com with some emotional weight. I cleared my weekend, popped some snacks, and binged all 12 episodes Ended up giving it a 4 out of 10. Oof.

Do not get me wrong, the animation and visuals are straight up stunning. Doga Kobo did a fantastic job. The character designs pop, backgrounds feel rich and lived in, and those little ... everyday moments like family dinners or walking around Setagaya look premium. The sisters are all drawn so distinctively that you can tell them apart even in group shots. I actually paused a few times just to appreciate the lighting in some scenes, especially the sunset ones. It is the kind of production quality that makes you think, Why could not this have been attached to a better story?

But yeah the story. Or lack of it. The whole premise hinges on that one big reveal early on: they are not blood related except the youngest twins. Cool twist in theory, right? Opens the door for forbidden romance vibes. In practice, though? It just sits there. The show teases all these potential arcs. Arata trying to navigate his feelings, the sisters dealing with their own emotions, family dynamics shifting. But nothing really builds or pays off in a satisfying way. It is incredibly slow paced. Like, glacial. Episodes one through seven felt like they were looping the same teasing, blushing, and minor misunderstandings on repeat. I started getting genuinely restless.

By episode eight or so, I was checking my phone during dialogues. I straight up switched to 4x speed for a chunk of the back half because the conversations dragged so much and the plot was not moving. Felt bad doing it, but I wanted to finish what I started. The ecchi jokes are there and yeah, overused. But they feel lazy and repetitive instead of funny or spicy. They do not carry the show at all. This was supposed to be a romantic comedy? I laughed maybe twice the whole season. The rest was just mild secondhand embarrassment and waiting for something anything to happen.

What really got to me was how it wasted its cast. The sisters have interesting setups on paper the smart one, the outgoing one, the youngest firecracker, etc. But most of them stay pretty one note. Arata as the perpetually overwhelmed older brother is relatable at first, but after a while you just want him to grow a spine or make an actual decision. There are glimmers of real emotion here and there. Like a quiet moment between siblings that hints at deeper family stuff. But they never get explored properly. It pains me because with this level of animation and voice acting, it could have been something special. Instead, it feels like it coasted on the not blood related hook and called it a day.

Look, I am not saying skip every mid anime. Sometimes you watch stuff for the vibes or eye candy. But this one left me frustrated more than anything. There are so many great shows out there fighting for your time. Stuff with actual stakes, character growth, or even just consistent laughs. This was not worth it for me. If you are craving a good sibling not sibling romance, go rewatch Quintessential Quintuplets or something that actually delivers.

Dororo is an anime that could have been a true masterpiece with a little more refinement. Its pacing, storytelling, and fight scenes are all remarkably well executed, making it a highly enjoyable series. However, considering it was released in 2019, I expected stronger animation and a more memorable soundtrack.

One of the series' greatest strengths is how vividly it portrays the darkest aspects of its era, immersing the audience in feudal Japan. I especially appreciated this atmosphere. With my final score ending up nearly three full points below what the consensus here on MAL seems to be I'll immediately concede some of my opinions on this movie may be unpopular, but it simply didn't do it for me. Throughout the entirety of my viewing I was varying levels of bored. Sure, you get the occasional street chase or violent confrontation, so it isn't a complete Serial Experiments Lain level of snoozefest, but it never ramps up the excitement or the stakes beyond a handful of moments like that. I think saying there's an actual STORY here is a bit generous as well. ... There's a fleshed out SETTING and CONCEPT, but as far as character development, actual plot points, meaningful bulle tpoints actually occurring throughout the film I'd say it's sorely lacking. As a distinction, it feels like it shows us a lot of characters simply existing within a fleshed out setting rather than the characters themselves being fleshed out.

Visual preferences are subjective but the style they went for didn't land for me. The ENVIRONMENTS look excellent, especially for a now 20 year old film, but the character models most certainly do not. Upon seeing the characters my mind IMMEDIATELY went to American television cartoon Arthur- a show TWENTY YEARS older than this film - and rarely in film or anime is looking two decades older and more dated than you actually are a positive thing. Some critics have lauded the "blending" of American and Japanese animation styles into something unique. I can possibly give a small amount of credit for at least trying something new and having a style that does not look like any other anime I can think of, so at least they were willing to take a risk and be creative, but I still think, for lack of a more eloquent term, the characters look like crap.

Visuals aside, as there are plenty of significantly older anime that look like complete garbage by today's standards that I very much enjoy, the bigger picture issue is simply the lack of substance or memorable moments. This film falls extremely hard into the "anime as an art form" category and is very much meant for that audience, and that's generally a subsection I err more positively than negatively towards, having loved Madoka Magica and had a sincere appreciation for Memories, for example, even if I wasn't absolutely blown away by it, but this film has neither the depth nor that MEMORABLE X-factor, pun intended, to put it in the same league as the aforementioned examples.

I always hesitate to click "not recommended" with just about anything because I think in general when all you're losing is an hour or two of your time people should generally go ahead and try new things and sometimes they are pleasantly surprised, so I wouldn't necessarily want to dissuade anyone from giving this a go. If you were instead asking me if I believe the majority of the general anime-watching audience would be enthralled by this that would be a loud, concrete NO. This is very much one of those films where the people who like it absolutely love it and the rest of us, like myself, really don't understand what the hype is about.

Episodes 1 & 2 are nothing special, there are some enjoyable aerial action scenes but a lot of it is a bit too shounen for my tastes. The worst parts are in a big, boring, loosely connected subplot in Tokyo that takes up a lot of screen time.

But they are worth plowing through for the amazing feature length finale which explores how war changes a man, in addition to some great animation capped off with an ambiguous but entirely appropriate ending. The only downsides are the Tokyo parts, whose resolution made the whole subplot feel mostly pointless.

This OVA was a dark comedy about an evil sadistic magical girl arriving on Earth (school setting) and defeating people with spells or.. melee combat.
All the characters were quite basic, including the main one. The stories were episodic without continuity except for new characters (but magically healed and friendly). And of course there wasn't any proper ending.
Animation and music were decent.

This anime was ok, but it felt less funny (and less fanservicy) than Dokuro-chan and kinda more mean spirited (the bone-breaking moments were brutal for a comedy).

Only for people who need some dark humor, but already saw the better titles.

Was looking for CGDCT and found this MASTERPIECE.

Sora no Woto is one of animes most overlooked hidden gems, its a masterpiece that mixes slice of life, drama, and post apocalyptic themes and CGDCT (which is the thing i like). Like most people who probably watched the 1st episode, this anime seems like a "Moe-flop" kind of show, it looks like and feels like a lighthearted anime about "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" in the military. Well its still is, but that first impression is one of the most misleading things of this anime.

In the first episode we follow Kanata, a girl who joins the ... military because she dreams of learning to play the Trumpet/Bugle. She is assigned to 1121st Platoon in the town of Seize, where she meets four other soldiers (Rio best girl). But in episode 2 it introduces us to one of Sora no Woto greatest strengths and it is creating an amazing worldbuilding, continuity and detail. By episode 2 and onwards Sora no Woto gives hints at tragedies of long past. The anime slowly reveals details about this history, making the setting feel interesting.

-THE CHARACTERS ( SPOILERS FOR SOME OF THE CHARACTERS )
The characters are another highlight of the series. Although Kanata is the main protagonist, the strength of Sora no Woto comes from the entire platoon and Rio being best girl. Each member represents a different response to trauma. Rio is a calm and capable leader who puts the needs of her platoon before her own. Kureha is strict and takes her military duties seriously, but she genuinely cares for her friends and is always willing to help them. Noël is quiet and reserved, a typical Kuudere yet her intelligence and past reveal a thoughtful character with deep regrets. Filicia the commander of the platoon, is kind, cheerful, and motherly, but beneath her warm smile she struggles with the painful memories and guilt left behind by being the sole survivor of her previous platoon. Their bond grows through everyday moments making their friendship feel genuine and the emotional scenes more meaningful.

-MUSIC
The music, OMG the music is genuinely amazing because music is not simply decoration for this anime. The soundtrack is beautiful and emotional, helping many scenes feel even more meaningful and a reoccurring sound is the song Amazing Grace everytime this song is played it emanates a sense of forgiveness and redemption. The Opening is too good, it captures the atmosphere well suited for this show, beautiful melody, gentle orchestral sounds. (never skipped it because its too good)

-CONCLUSION
Overall, Sora no Woto is one of anime's most overlooked gem, a series that disguises itself as a slice of life/CGDCT exterior. It combines exceptional writing, worldbuilding, nuanced anti war themes, unforgettable music, and deeply human characters into a story that lingers long after its final episode.

It is a rewarding series for viewers who enjoy character driven stories and emotional storytelling.

DO NOT BE FOOLED by others that says this is a K-on or something.

Honestly, Marriagetoxin had all the makings of not being made for me. A shounen battle anime combined with what you could only describe as a harem main protagonist? I really didn't think the show could work for me. But despite that, it was probably my biggest surprise of the Spring season, because it took these elements and made them work in a way that I wouldn't have expected. Especially in the most important aspect for a show about dating which are the characters.

1. Story and main formula

But from the beginning. Marriagetoxin is a story about Hikaru Gero, a "master of poison" who was trained ... to be one of the nearly perfect assassins with superpowers that exist in the world. However, when his grandmother plans the future of their clan, she decides, since Gero isn't seemingly interested in getting a wife, that his sister should grant her with an heir. With the only problem that his sister is a lesbian and already has a girlfriend that she would have to break up with. Because Gero doesn't want his sister to suffer a fate where she has to abandon the love of her life, he decides that he will make sure that there is an heir, but with one condition: he is allowed to decide who he is going to marry. So he takes the help of the marriage swindler Mei Kinosaki to find potential love interests and get them interested in him as well.

And I think, this is the first good change to the usual harem formula. While all of the love interests do fall for Gero in one way or another, because despite his job, he is ultimately still a nice guy at heart, this does not happen without any of his input. These girls don't meet Gero through a convoluted coincidence (or just being at the same school as him), but Gero is the one seeking them out in order to find the love of his life. Granted he does so under the guise of doing jobs for them (either being a bodyguard or helping them in other ways), but he is obviously also trying to build a relation to them while doing so. And while this doesn't sound like a big change, this already makes Gero and these relationships so much more interesting, because developing these feelings isn't just happening out of nowhere, because he actively tries to create them. For himself, but also the girls he meets.

2. Characters

Which already brings us to the most important aspect of a romance show: the characters. And on the surface, this again looks like your typical setup. You have the more shy main character who has problems just talking to girls and girls from different flavors: there is your tomboy with a heart of gold, a shy introverted girl, the extroverted one and even a Tsundere. And I guess technically, there is even Mei Kinosaki who cross dresses as a girl for his job as a marriage swindler. But the strength comes again from how the show works with these character archetypes. Again, despite Gero being introverted and having problems talking to girls or just being shy around the prospect asking them for a date, he is actively working on this flaw of his so that he is able to find a person he can share his life with. This obviously doesn't get fixed immediately and not even in the first season, but you can see small steps into the right direction over time. And the same can be said for the girls. Just as an example, at the end, it's the shy girl that asks for Gero's number with a confidence that you wouldn't have expected from her. And this doesn't come from nowhere either, because every arc is also an arc for the girls themselves. Because while they are all different, their stories all share a common theme which they have to work through: family. The main theme of the show. One girl didn't have parents and was adopted, but not because the person wanted a daughter, but because he needed an heir, so she wasn't loved either way. Another girl was burdened by the expectations of her dying father who wanted her to take over the company when she herself didn't think she was capable of doing so. And even Gero obviously works in that theme, because the whole story is about how his grandmother is more interested in the continuation of their bloodline instead of seeing her grandchildren become happy. And these stories are what gives the characters the depth needed in an otherwise rather simple setting. Sure, it is not super deep yet, I will agree on that. This can still be build upon, but it makes that you feel connected to every character, because struggling with family in one sense or another is a strong emotional core without the show trying to force you to feel emotions towards their backstories either.

On this point, I also want to mention that the other side characters which are not direct love interests are done really well despite them not even having a lot of screen time. This mainly includes Gero's friend, the bug master and later the assassin hunter. There isn't really much to say about them, because obviously the show's focus is on Gero and his love interests, but especially the bug master was a really good surprise. We get to see his wedding and despite it being a bit weird (all bug themed), it was a really wholesome moment, not just for him and his bride, but also for Gero's character as a whole. And sometimes, all it needs are these really wholesome moments. I also want to quickly mention Mei Kinosaki here again, because I think his interactions with Gero are always really funny and you can feel a strong friendship growing between the two (or maybe even more in the future).

3. Negatives

Now, all that sounds really good. But I do want to mention that I still have two gripes with the show which is what holds it back currently from being really strong. The first one is the fact that we do not get a sense of where the show wants to go beyond the initial meetup with every one of the love interests. At least in this first season. The story is structured in a way that Gero takes a job to meet a new lover interest, we get to know the love interest, see them build a relation towards Gero and then them exchanging phone numbers. And while this is satisfying in a way, I would have really like to at least get a hint of what is planned beyond that. How is the show going to expand on these stories in the future and how will these characters "reintroduced" later on. For now, it sadly feels like we are still in the "collecting" phase where we have to introduce every character and considering that we got only 5 (which includes Mei and the water master in that count who are technically a bit different from the other 3) in 13 episodes, the development can feel a bit slow in that direction. And the reason for that is the second problem and these are the fights. Because remember, this is still a battle shounen show. And don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily dislike the fights in principle. I found them enjoyable during the Himekawa arc and during the Shiori arc, the fight was also heavily connected to her development, so it wasn't that much of an issue. But especially with Arashiyama, the fight started to drag a bit towards the end. I get that this was due to the opponent being the strongest and we even got a typical shounen moment where Gero increases his "power level" to beat him. But I had just wished that there was a slightly better balance between fights and romance, because the scale started to be weighed towards the fights in the end, which I personally didn't enjoy as much.

4. Fights

Therefore, I say this here again, if you expect this show to be mostly about romance, be informed that a large portion of it is also shounen battle. And just to be fair to the show, the fights are not bad. While I was surprised by how over the top they got (like we literally got different families with superpowers) they are all well animated and directed and while the show only really has one memorable track during these fights, this one is so good that it always got me excited. You still have to expect a lot of Shounen typical moments during these fights, but I will give them that they also do not take themselves too seriously all the time. This goes for the powers themselves, but even small moments in the fights. The best example might probably be the sound master. Who has the ability to vibrate his muscles which creates a sound in a frequency that can "brain wash" (it is a bit less brain washing and more amplifying feelings to be fair, but it is still funny when this leads to girls fawning over him, because he is attractive). However, there is also a moment when the sound master, in the middle of the fight with Gero, just chops up a tree, takes a few strings of his hair to create a violin. And you expect him to use this for some crazy ability and all he does is throw the thing at Gero. Which is a humor that is obviously subjective, but I really loved it. And all that isn't talking about the different animal masters who have such intimidating animals as sloths. So there is a good amount of humor going on as well.

5. Character designs

The last positive thing I want to mention here are the character designs. What I really appreciated is that this is not a story set in highschool with everyone having the same uniform, but since it is in an adult setting, every character comes with their own really unique designs. And I will say it, they all look really well done. I want to especially say that Kinosaki probably goes through 10 different outfits throughout the show and I always like when a series isn't fixed on their original designs but is willing to change them here and there (and it works with him being a marriage swindler).

6. Summary

So in summary, despite being a battle shounen harem series, Marriagetoxin is a really enjoyable ride and this mostly comes from the fact that the characters in this romance show work really well. They all appear rather simple and like typical stereotypes on the surface, but they have a bit more depth to them which I hope to see more of in the future when the show uses its big cast to its fullest. But more imporantly, what makes this show work is that it is not just about Gero and his path to finding the love of his life, but every arc also includes a development for the love interests. Combined with well placed dialogue and the general fun interactions between Gero and Kinosaki and you have a series that might not be an artistic masterpiece, where there is a lot to interpret in the finer details, but which is fun from start to finish and which still offers a really strong core theme revolving around family. And while the fights can be a bit overbearing in the end, they are still well animated and sometimes even come with a sense of humor that in my opinion works really well. And if the series can manage to balance fights and romance a bit better in the next season, then there is no doubt in my mind that this could become one of my favourite shounen battle animes.

There are plenty of reasons I love this anime, but the main point that people tend to miss on their first watch through is the one that I point out when recommending it to other people. (Slight spoiler warning in the 2nd paragraph)

The thing about this anime is how it blends together comedy, romance, and deep moments all into one. A clear example of this is when Nasa is working, he talks about how people don't realize many things, especially about themselves. Which is why, when they do notice something, its often too late. This line in tonikawa really stood out in my 2nd watch ... through. It shows how we naturally ignore subtle signs of stress and unhappiness, and often only reflect on our actions after the consequences have arrived. People often take relationships for granted, and health and time are valued most after they are lost which really made me rethink this whole series. There are many examples like this throughout all of the series, but this is the one that truly stood out to me. Hiding small details like this is really why this show was truly a masterpiece.

What really makes this anime special is how it makes you care deeply about small moments. A simple conversation or gesture between the characters can carry weight because of the shows pacing and attention to emotional detail. It never feels forced, but feels natural, like the characters have a real bond. These small moments build overtime into something bigger, and it makes you really reflect on your own life in ways that, personally, I never expected.

Another aspect that makes Tonikawa stand out is how it portrays love as something simple and sweet. A good example of this is in the very first episode actually. The story begins with an unexpected marriage from the main couple. This relationship highlights the idea that love does not always require grand gestures or complicated conditions. Instead, genuine affection and commitment to your partner can really form the foundation of a lasting relationship. Every interaction between Nasa and Tsukasa reinforces and builds upon their love, whether its walking home together, or sharing a home cooked meal. By focusing on the idea that love is simple, the series really shows a heartwarming perspective of love, and shows that devotion and care towards your partner can make for true happiness.

Overall, Tonikawa definitely deserves a watch. It's always fun coming back to this series and being able to enjoy the sweet and heartwarming moments between Nasa and Tsukasa. The art style, music, funny moments, and story are all things to admire in this anime and if you have the time, you should absolutely give this anime a try.

This season is so peak. I love how powerless Subaru is and how unforgiving everything is to him, it really gives a more realistic view of how isekais should be instead of getting a power that just makes the character a god level threat on the first episode. This is what happens when you write something from a single, limited point of view.

The creators clearly have a specific scene in mind, and they will sacrifice everything else just to force it to happen. In the span of three minutes, you are introduced to a brand-new concept, you watch the main character use it to "aura farm," and then it completely loses all relevance to the world.

Vivy is a series that reached for greatness and fell like Icarus—bold, but lacking the rigor to fulfill its ambition.

The story explores a complex existential conflict, questioning what truly makes us human while searching for the elusive line between simulation and genuine consciousness. There are no definitive answers to that question, but the implications of asking it expose the fragile seams of an imperfect society.

The animation is outstanding, and the fight choreography is nothing short of spectacular. Every confrontation feels exhilarating thanks to dynamic cinematography and relentless pacing. The soundtrack is equally exceptional, serving as a vital narrative tool that arrives with perfect timing to ... elevate tragic, dramatic, and intimate moments alike.

Spanning roughly a century, the series works remarkably well for most of its runtime despite several narrative inconsistencies that remain largely tolerable—until everything reaches a breaking point around episodes 11 and 12. The main antagonist’s motivations are surprisingly shallow and fail to feel consistent with its own nature. In its final stretch, the story relies on shortcuts that are more emotionally manipulative than logically earned, leaving what should have been the emotional and philosophical pillar of the climax unable to stand on its own.

A lack of narrative rigor results in too many conveniences that contradict the logic of such an engineering-driven world. It’s perfectly reasonable for autonomous AIs to develop increasingly unpredictable behavioral patterns as they strive to resemble humans, but the series forgets this distinction all too often—before long, even a toaster has attitude. The time skips are also poorly communicated. While they’re understandable, it’s often difficult to grasp how much time has actually passed. For a story built around a hundred-year journey, the passage of time feels strangely understated. Clearly stating the year and the elapsed time after each jump would have given greater weight to its scale, allowing the consequences of time itself to resonate more naturally.

Another weakness is that the story doesn’t spend enough time exploring the trauma and emotional scars left on Vivy by both the world and her experiences. This is particularly important because those very scars are what gradually carve out a soul capable of eventually allowing her to “find her voice.”

Throughout this review, I couldn’t help but compare Vivy to Frieren. I genuinely wish this series had received the same obsessive level of care devoted to its details, narrative, and character motivations. Had it done so, I truly believe it could have become something extraordinary.

Despite my obvious disappointment, I still believe Vivy is an experience well worth watching, appreciating, and remembering.

Mixed Feelings

This one was disappointing, but it's possible my expectations were too high. You see, this anime has brief flashes of a much more interesting show that actually is about something: specifically the hyper-capitalist work culture and mandatory crunch in Japan, or even the games industry as a whole. We see every character at some point have to work so late into the night that the trains have stopped running, losing so much sleep they pass out at random moments, and multiple characters mention family and friends being openly worried about their health - our main character even gets in a fight during one such moment ... in defense of the company exploiting her.

By far the best scene in the show is the opening to Episode 10 when Aoba is riding the train into work, and we see the world around her drawn in uncolored pencil sketches, the people around her depicted with no facial details, audio of conversations fading in and out - showing us just how sleep deprived she is. She manages to jolt awake when the announcer calls her stop, and she runs out of the train car just in time to see a husband, wife, and child walking by her smiling and laughing together as she pauses to look on with envy. It sinking in that the reality of working in this industry is that she's a young woman who’s giving her entire life to her company - she doesn't have time for romance, to meet people, have kids, have any kind of social life.

I think it's so interesting that the show doesn't shy away from showing how miserable this toxic work culture can be, but at the same time we never actually explore the topic in any depth beyond that. It’s always brought up for a few seconds and then dismissed with a joke or a “Ganbare!”. I know the show wants to keep a light tone, but I can’t help imagining a version of it that started off with comedic slice of life hijinks and cute girls doing cute things, and actually followed through on exploring its central topic - and had the characters become more miserable and jaded as it went - reflecting the main character’s initial wonder and optimism, the same thing that drives so many to work in the games industry, eventually being beaten out of her by a system in which she is an expendable cog in a vast uncaring, unfeeling machine.

I know it sounds crazy to expect any of that from a slice of life moe show, but it’s not an unstated reality that we’re ignoring here - the show DOES go there just often enough to make me want to stick around to see if it’ll actually do something with it - but unfortunately it never does, and so New Game condemns itself to being a very average slice of life show, albeit one that had a lot of untapped potential.

a show that often undercuts its own storytelling for the sake of jokes. yozakura is a show i watched weekly for its first season, and doing that for a two cour show really integrates it into your thoughts after a while, so the second season was definitely something i was going to watch, but i definitely enjoyed it a lot less than the first season. we've very much gone from shounen comedy with a spy theme to slice of life comedy with a super power theme, and i think the show has really lost a lot of value taking that route. no longer do we ...
