Kävin pienellä keikalla leikkauspöydällä eilen ja otetaanpa sen kunniaksi soittovuoroon Dr. Feelgood ja heidän räkäisen energinen klassikkonsa ‘Down At the Doctors’ vuodelta 1978. Tässä menossa ei hienostella, vaan annetaan palaa täydellä teholla. Räkäinen oli sairaalakeikkakin, sillä aukaisivat poskiontelot ja poistivat samalla muutaman polyypin hengityksen kulkua häiritsemästä.

Dr. Feelgood tunnettiin siitä, ettei se kaivannut mitään ylimääräistä krumeluuria. ‘Down At the Doctors’ on täydellinen taidonnäyte bändin tyylistä: tiukka, eteenpäin puskeva rhythm and blues -komppi, raaka kitarasoundi ja laulaja Lee Brilleaux’n karhea, suoraan sielusta tuleva tulkinta. Biisi on julkaistu Private Practice -albumilla ja se onnistuu aina tiivistämään tunnelman sekunneissa.

Keikkabändinä Dr. Feelgood on vertaansa vailla, ainakin pienissä klubeissa esiintyessään. Näin bändin livenä Jyväskylässä joskus tässä 200o -luvulla ja Red Necksin baarissa oli räkänen meno päällä!

I had a little ‘gig’ of my own on the operating table yesterday, so to celebrate, let’s put on Dr. Feelgood and their gritty, high-energy 1978 classic, ‘Down At the Doctors.’ This track doesn’t do fancy—it just burns at full blast. My hospital gig was pretty gritty too, as they opened up my sinuses and removed a few polyps that were blocking my breathing.

Dr. Feelgood was known for not needing any extra fluff. ‘Down At the Doctors’ is a perfect showcase of the band’s style: a tight, driving rhythm and blues groove, a raw guitar sound, and singer Lee Brilleaux’s raspy, soulful delivery. Released on the Private Practice album, the song always manages to crank up the atmosphere in seconds.

As a live band, Dr. Feelgood is second to none, at least when performing in small clubs. I saw them live in Jyväskylä sometime in the 2000s, and the vibe at Red Necks bar was absolutely gritty!
