As a YouTube find from the early ’70s, here’s some rarely heard British rock from Atomic Rooster and the track ‘Can’t Take No More’ from their ‘Death Walks Behind You‘ -album. The song was written by John Du Cann, the band’s vocalist. By the way, the album is pretty damn good.

I had a little ‘gig’ of my own on the operating table yesterday, so to celebrate, let’s put on Dr. Feelgood and their gritty, high-energy 1978 classic, ‘Down At the Doctors.’ This track doesn’t do fancy—it just burns at full blast. My hospital gig was pretty gritty too, as they opened up my sinuses and removed a few polyps that were blocking my breathing.
Dr. Feelgood was known for not needing any extra fluff. ‘Down At the Doctors’ is a perfect showcase of the band’s style: a tight, driving rhythm and blues groove, a raw guitar sound, and singer Lee Brilleaux’s raspy, soulful delivery. Released on the Private Practice album, the song always manages to crank up the atmosphere in seconds.
As a live band, Dr. Feelgood is second to none, at least when performing in small clubs. I saw them live in Jyväskylä sometime in the 2000s, and the vibe at Red Necks bar was absolutely gritty!

Today, we’re jumping into some sophisticated disco from the genre’s golden age with Chic’s ‘I Want Your Love.’ This 1978 gem is an absolute hit, featuring one of the tightest rhythm sections the world has ever known.
The heart and soul of Chic—guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards—created a sound that changed the course of pop music history. ‘I Want Your Love’ is a prime example of their genius: that famous rising and falling horn section, the hypnotic tubular bells, and, of course, Edwards’ mind-blowing bassline. Say what you will about disco, but this is a perfect example of its greatness. The track is from the album ‘C’est Chic‘, and it manages to be coolly elegant and red-hot all at once. It has that certain rolling groove that leaves no one cold. The music doesn’t scream for attention; it simply commands it from the very first notes. It’s a reminder that sometimes, you just have to let the rhythm take control.

Let’s keep going with this classic rock streak, which is perhaps a bit unusual for me. Then again, I think I might have seen this gentleman live at a festival, or maybe as an opening act or something. Next up is Billy Squier’s masterpiece, ‘Lonely Is The Night.’ If Filter provided an electric shock earlier, Squier is now serving up a wall of guitars and a rolling groove that’ll knock your socks off. The track is taken from the 1981 album Don’t Say No.
