Morgan Reynolds (x-post)
Apologies if this has already been posted here. If it was, I missed it. Has anyone heard about this? Does this give some sort of creedence to stories like Loose Change? I imagine a good way to gauge how close to the truth Reynolds gets us will be by the amount of ad hominem attacks we start to see. Texas A&M has already started to distance the university from him. UPI Hears...By John Daly UPI International Correspondent Washington, DC, Jun. 13 (UPI) -- Insider notes from United Press International for June 8 A former Bush team member during his first administration is now voicing serious doubts about the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9-11. Former chief economist for the Department of Labor during President George W. Bush's first term Morgan Reynolds comments that the official story about the collapse of the WTC is "bogus" and that it is more likely that a controlled demolition destroyed the Twin Towers and adjacent Building No. 7. Reynolds, who also served as director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas and is now professor emeritus at Texas A&M University said, "If demolition destroyed three steel skyscrapers at the World Trade Center on 9/11, then the case for an 'inside job' and a government attack on America would be compelling." Reynolds commented from his Texas A&M office, "It is hard to exaggerate the importance of a scientific debate over the cause of the collapse of the twin towers and building 7. If the official wisdom on the collapses is wrong, as I believe it is, then policy based on such erroneous engineering analysis is not likely to be correct either. The government's collapse theory is highly vulnerable on its own terms. Only professional demolition appears to account for the full range of facts associated with the collapse of the three buildings." Of Politics and Religion I wanted to wait until my temper about these two issues calmed down before I put up anything.
Deepening Democracy This one of the key things I am interested in as an academic issue and personally. I think it is very important. HM Government, misled by Mr. Blair, decided to go to war on the Iraqi people to promote freedom and rid ourselves from the threat of WMDs. There is an idea that by promoting democracy even by force the world can be made a safer place. This has turned out to be an essentially frivolous claim. None of this really suprizes me.
What surprizes me is comments such as 'I have just tried and listened to evidence of electoral fraud that would disgrace a banana republic'. NO. This was not said of the recent problematic elections in Iraq or Zimbabwe. It is about electoral fraud in the UK due to postal voting. I find it reprehensible and morally abhorent that the government has ignored the advise of the commission it has appointed to investiagte the matter (whats new with this though?) and has failed to alter evil that lies under its own power before pressing for changes elsewhere. This is the height of hypocrisy. The worse part about it is that it is claimed that nothign can be done about the issue before the next election where the number of people whot vote by post is expected to increase.
Death of the Pope I fundamentally disagree with bollox on this one. The Pope was not the good ole Pole. I respect and admire many things about the man. He did not talk down to Africans and he reached out to other religions. He travelled to take his message elsewhere. He was against war and materialism. Funny how the US media does not report those views when praising him. But lets be a bit more critcal here folks. Sainthood for the man who opposed Catholic opposition to the oppression and exclusion that the majority of people in Latin America face? This is depite his opposition to communism in Eastern Europe which was far less demoralising than poverty in Latin America. Anyone who has even been inside a favela can tell you this. Sainthood for the man who opposes the use of condoms in Africa? Africa is the continent where Catholicism is spreadig the fastest and where AIDS is spreading even more quickly. Ignorant people need to take themselves to a library and do some reading about facts. But then again religion has always had the power to blind people to the truth and rob them of the capacity to think they can change their lives:
Most people think great God will come from the sky Take away ev'rything, and make ev'rybody feel high But if you know what life is worth You would look for yours on earth And now you see the light You stand up for your right, yeah! On a lighter note.
The reason I joined this group was because Steve Bell was listed in the
interests. Back in 1989 the poll tax was introduced in Scotland, and
Steve Bell wrote two If.. strips about this, in a parody of The Broons,
a popular Scottish comic strip. Unfortunately D.C.Thompson, the
publishers of The Broons threatened legal action, and they were never
reprinted.
I have copies. I can't find them anywhere else on the internet, and so
I thought that I would try to get them more widely distributed, as they
aren't doing anyone any good just languishing on my hard drive.
To those of you who aren't really aware of Steve Bell, The Broons, or
U.K politics in the late '80s, I apologise. To the rest of you, enjoy.
And promulgate.

On the other hand...
...you get the situation in the UK where they are proposing to legalise euthenasia, which is such a sane response. I think that the most disturbing aspect of the Terri Schiavo case was the way it was played in the media. It was presented as a topic that split the nation down the middle. Apparently there was lot of difficult soul searching and a crisis in the country. They would then follow this with polls stating that 80% of the country believing that a) it should be entirely the husbands choice, and, b) that the government should keep their noses the hell out of it. Where was this crisis? There wasn't that clear of a majority in the election, and apparently that was a clear mandate. Once again the christian far-right led the news agenda with their own interpretation and spin, and every T.V. news source followed along. | | Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005 | 11:24 pm [lawnorder4all]

What?!?! Could it be the Right is waking up?!?!?!
Bush Role in Schiavo Case Bothers Right
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON -
Not all conservatives are happy with the decision by Congress and President Bush (news - web sites)
to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case. Some leaders said Tuesday the
new law allowing a federal court review of the case is an example of
the big government they have always opposed.
"To simply say that the 'culture of
life,' or whatever you call it means that we don't have to pay
attention to the principles of federalism or separation of powers is
certainly not a conservative viewpoint," said former Rep. Bob Barr,
R-Ga.
Allan Lichtman, who chairs the history
department at American University in Washington, said the intervention
of Congress and Bush to try to overturn the decision by Schiavo's
husband not to prolong her life is the antithesis of several
conservative principles.
"It contradicts a lot of what those
behind it say they believe: the sanctity of the family, the sacred bond
between husband and wife, the ability of all of us to make private
decisions without the hand of government intervening, deference to
states and localities as opposed to the centralized government," said
Lichtman.
Terri Schiavo suffered brain damage in
1990 when her heart stopped briefly. She can breathe on her own, but
has relied on a feeding tube to keep her alive since.
The feeding tube was removed Friday under
a Florida court order, but Congress passed a law Monday requiring a
federal court review of the case in the hope that the judge hearing it
would order the tube reinserted. U.S. District Court Judge James
Whittemore of Tampa rejected the plea of Schiavo's parents to do that.
The case evolved into a cause for social
"right to life" conservatives who oppose abortion and euthanasia. Bush
justified the action, saying the case was complex but that it was
better to err on the side of life.
But Republican Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record) of Virginia voted against the legislation, saying it goes against the conservative principles of federalism.
"That the misfortunes of life vested upon
Theresa Marie Schiavo are a human tragedy, no one can deny. I said my
prayers, as did many Americans, as we attended religious services this
Palm Sunday," he said. "I believe it unwise for the Congress to take
from the state of Florida its constitutional responsibility to resolve
the issues in this case."
David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, says he has mixed feelings about what Congress and Bush did.
Conservatives "who questioned the wisdom
of the federal government reaching down and interfering with the state
courts have a very valid point," Keene said. "In Congress, most
conservatives have said, 'We're cognizant of that fact and that's why
we have done this so narrowly because we don't think there's another
choice.' But those who are concerned about precedent should be
concerned about it."
Julian E. Zelizer, a Boston University
history professor who specializes in congressional trends, said a
conservative Republican movement that "built itself in the 1970s around
attacking government has become the party of big government since
2000."
"Starting with the war against terrorism
and climaxing with Congress intervening in this case, we see a GOP that
is quite comfortable flexing the muscle of Washington, and a Democratic
Party which is increasingly finding itself in favor of limiting
government," Zelizer said. Current Mood: hopeful | | Saturday, February 5th, 2005 | 3:00 pm [gaijin_chan]

So Very Happy to be Here!
gaijin-chan here. Feelin' powerless, stuck in year 1 of Bush II. Cannot understand why some people understand what motivates the masses so well that they can say bold-faced lies and have everyone gobbling them more eagerly than truth. Hoping you all will help be a window into hope for a brighter future. Would be prayin' right now, but they seem to have co-opted God. Did you hear about the new stamp?
The U.S. Postal Service created a stamp with a picture of
President Bush to honor his achievements. In daily use, many people
complained that the stamps were not sticking to the envelopes. After a
month's testing, a special presidential commission made the following
findings: 1) The stamp was in perfect order; 2) There was nothing
wrong with the applied adhesive; 3) People were spitting on the wrong
side.

Liberals on the Spit... Canada busy sending back Bush-dodgers Tuesday,
November 16, 2004 By JOE BLUNDO
KCTV-5, Kansas City
The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has
intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the
illegal immigration.
The re-election of President Bush is prompting the exodus among citizens
who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray and agree with Bill
O'Reilly.
Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology
professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at
night.
"I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood
producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage
borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. "He asked me
if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have
any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?"
In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences,
but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush
Limbaugh across the fields. "Not real effective," he said. "The liberals still
got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk."
Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near
the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across
the border and leave them to fend forthemselves.
"A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions," an Ontario
border patrolman said. "I found one carload without a drop of drinking water.
They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though."
When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often
wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been
circulating about the Bush administration establishing re-education camps in
which liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR.
In the days since the election, liberals have turned to sometimes ingenious
ways of crossing the border.
Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap
Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised
in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and
quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers.
"If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we
get suspicious about their age," an official said. Canadian citizens have
complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage
and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies.
"I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy justcan't
support them," an Ottawa resident said. "How many art-history majors does one
country need?"
In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, Vice
President Dick Cheney met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that the
administration would take steps to reassure liberals, a source close to Cheney
said. "We're going to have some Peter, Paul & Mary concerts. And we might
put some endangered species on postage stamps. The president is determined to
reach out." Current Mood: amused |
