I got the Step Into Reading Nala and Simba book from the library, and I like it. (Even although the library editon does not have the shiny stickers promised by the cover.)

I like the understatement of "Hyenas find them. The hyenas are mean." Then later, when Nala and Simba are grown up and meet in a jungle (Timon and Pumbaa are omitted from this retelling):
Nala and Simba play. They fall in love. Nala tells Simba to come home.

A friend texted me about the news of a wild lioness nursing a leopard cub.

My reply:
I've read that fanfic Course it being fic the lioness falls for the leopard dad

Been years and years since I last read that one, but I remember the title: The Spotted Lion. It's from 1997, no less.
