We must realize that, at its core, procrastination is about emotions, not productivity. The solution doesn’t involve downloading a time management app or learning new strategies for self-control. It has to do with managing our emotions in a new way.

Per email confirm with Boston MFA: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the exhibition 'Murder in Miniature: The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death' has been cancelled."

I'd heard this was going to be the last time they'd be publicly exhibited - I really wanted to see them in person at least once in my life! Will have to source a copy of Of Dolls and Murder and/or Murder in a Nutshell: The Frances Glessner Lee Story to watch in consolation.

* My favorite very bad pun occasion so far was a massive backup of people trying to transfer at Downtown Crossing — the whole crowd I was part of slowed down so much we were practically waddling forward inch-by-inch in union, to which I was practically compelled to remark, "It's like we're reenacting the great molasses flood!"

Please allow the doors to close
Keep yourselves clear of the closing doors, please
We appreciate your patience: Tuesday's snows

have caused severe delays, our signals froze—
folks, keep your elbows and bags clear of the closing doors, please
you need to allow the doors to close

recent throes of our trains' outmoded motors mean slows
anticipate delays, seek alternate routes if possible, please
the additional accumulation from Monday's snows

is straining our underfunded fleet out of prose—
keep your elbows, baggage, tempers, hopes and dreams clear of the closing doors, please
we can't leave the station until you allow the doors to close

fights and fires on the T, your leaders fall to pose
one train's passengers forced to walk the rails, we say enough, please!
when this next Monday brought two more feet of snows

we closed the rail entire — over face chose
your lives free of the closing doors; please,
please allow the doors to close

(be advised more storms this weekend, brace for snows)

I utterly reject this prediction: Sorry, Boston: Two More Major Storms On the Way by Eric Holthaus
Weather models are increasingly insistent on two more major storms this week, one on Thursday to Friday and another potentially bigger one on Sunday.

Nope nope nope

ETA: as for the import of being reliant on public transportation for all one's commuting needs in the greater Boston area at this time, I think [personal profile] therienne puts it best: The End is Nigh. It will come in the form of the TA of the MB
It is hard to explain just how bad the public transpor[t]ation situation has gotten during all of this blizzard-misery.

Last week, when the T was only approaching total collapse, and hadn't yet reached the point where the General Manager of the T and the Governor of the State were using reporters in their respective press conferences to exchange insults, was bad enough. People were stacked up so tightly on platforms I'm surprised birth control wasn't needed, trains were breaking down, catching fire, and occasionally vanishing never to be seen again. Fights were breaking out, and the drop-off/pick-up area of the station were so bad that it's possible I may have thrown a snowball at a car that was endangering lives. (True story, I threw a snowball. Then I hid behind a convenient snow bank).

All MBTA rail services will be suspended at 7:00 p.m on Monday, Feb 9 and from start to end of service on Tuesday, Feb 10. This means no Subway, Trolleys or Commuter Rail trains will depart Boston after 7:00 p.m.

From mbta.com's current Severe Weather Update - February 7-10, 2015
The MTA in New York has generously loaned the MBTA two jet-powered snow blowers (very similar to the MBTA’s "Snowzilla") to help clear the snow along the Red and Orange Line rights-of-way. Please be advised that these pieces of equipment are powered by jet engines, which produce elevated levels of noise.
NYC has taken pity on us and sent help. (Praise be.)

Via weather underground, Potentially Historic Blizzard Taking Aim on New England
The densely populated area from New York City to Boston could experience one of its ten biggest snowstorms on record early this week, as a textbook nor’easter takes shape over the next 48 hours. While local details are bound to evolve somewhat as the storm develops, the models are now in strong, consistent agreement on a potentially crippling snowstorm. Blizzard watches were hoisted on Sunday morning from eastern New Jersey to northeast Massachusetts, including the New York, Providence, and Boston metropolitan areas.

If you live in one of the areas affected, I strongly recommend visiting weather.gov and inputting your zip code for the most up-to-date / comprehensive advisory for your area. The warnings for Boston currently include a coastal flood warning in addition to the blizzard warning (the latter of which includes "travel will be impossible and life threatening across the entire region").

The CDC has Winter Weather FAQ. Please feel encouraged to share other resources or tips in the comments.

You are invited to tea! Or as [personal profile] stultiloquentia put it,
Attention fanbeans! jjhunter and I are hosting a fannish tea party on Sunday, November 17th, at 2 PM. It will be low-key and introvert-friendly: drop by and stay as long as you like, munch snacks, chat, curl up in the corner with your knitting, play Bananagrams, watch vids, try to convert me to your latest fandom. Food and beverage contributions are welcome, but not necessary. Feel free to add people to the invite list.

We are in the Boston area. PM me if you would like our address.

8/30 Elizabeth Warren: Boston's epidemic
There have been more than 100 shootings in Boston since the Marathon in April.

Think about that. If 100 people went to Massachusetts General Hospital with a mysterious virus in four months, we would treat it as an epidemic. There would be headlines, alarms, and calls for action.

(See this post Signal Boost: shootings in Boston since the Boston Marathon (6/3) for additional context.)

In honor of the 2013 National Poetry Slam being hosted this week in Boston, I'm organizing a poetry meetup this Saturday afternoon in the Boston Common. We'll meet at the monument overlooking the frog pond [here on Google maps] around 3pm, and enjoy whatever combination of word games, nibbles, frisbee, napping, improv, performance & other shenanigans our hearts desire. Around quarter to 6, anyone interested in walking to the NPS Finals is welcome to join me in moseying down Boylston St. & hitting up Pret a Manger for additional sustenance en route.

If you're interested in coming, please comment to that effect (all comments to this post are screened) with your preferred name and any food-related allergies / strong dislikes. Friends, roomies, significant others, etc. are also welcome - just give me a quick heads up beforehand so I know to bring enough food.

ETA: signal boosting much appreciated!

ETA2: all you lovely people, I am so very sorry; between guests this weekend & some much needed last minute home repair work, I've lost my window of time for hosting frolicking in the park. I hope you enjoy the lovely weather without me, and perhaps I'll have a chance to catch up with some of you at the Finals proper.

5/2 [personal profile] ursamajor: the violence that doesn't get headlines in boston

Can you guess how many shootings there were in Boston 4/15 - 5/2? Answer behind the cut )

Via the same post, this quote from Brandeis prof. Eileen McNamara:
We are very particular in this country about the kind of violence that mobilizes us to talk — if not act — about public safety and gun control. The slaughter of little children in a Connecticut elementary school. The carnage in a Colorado movie theater. An assassination attempt at a Tuscon shopping mall. An act of terror at the Boston Marathon.

The more insidious and persistent violence, that spawned by gangs and drugs and poverty and despair, barely registers on the consciousness of those with the good fortune to live outside the battle zone.

My favorite story in the news today comes from the Boston Globe: Dunkin’ Donuts kept the lights on during chaos: At officials’ request, coffee chain stayed open during lockdown to aid police, emergency responders
It was clear amid the chaos Friday which was the hometown coffee chain.

On block after block of Boston’s Financial District and Downtown Crossing, Starbucks shops went dark as the city locked down, spurred by a manhunt for the second Marathon bombing suspect. Dunkin’ Donuts stayed open.

Law enforcement officials asked the chain to keep some restaurants open in locked-down communities to provide hot coffee and food to police and other emergency workers, including in Watertown, the focus of the search for the bombing suspect. Dunkin’ is providing its products to them at no charge [...] The stores, however, were serving anyone who came in, whether they were looking for a cup of Joe or a place to charge a phone.
