I feel the need to make entries that are unrelated to work or my potential nervous breakdown if work continues to drive me bonkers. So, snagged from [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly, among others, and for those of you who may not know:

1. What is the meaning behind your LJ name?
2. What was your favourite childhood book or books?
3. What is your favourite recipe and why? Try to post the recipe if you have time.
4. What are the top 5 things on your wish list & have you done any of them?
5. What do you collect?

1. Ah, what's in a name, anyway? Back in the olden days, before I even had an email address (oh, yes, I'm old enough to recall those times), I was in an advanced placement English class my senior year with a rather eccentric teacher. (Don't get me wrong, we all loved Mrs. V, but she was the very definition of eccentric.) At some point, she required us to form small groups, and so [livejournal.com profile] xphilehb, another friend, and I banded together. And then she required us to choose group names. I will begrudgingly admit that another group in the class chose Dogmatic Sage, and I think that might have given us an idea. In any case, the three of us were huge X-Files fans, and we all loved Scully, and we'd all seen the episode where she was called "the enigmatic Dr. Scully." And since my favorite color was blue, and no one else had a problem with the name, we were Enigmatic Blue.

Some months later, when it came time to select my first email address (which is still active), I chose enigmaticblue, which was also my pseud for all fanfic from that point on. When friends prevailed upon me to join LJ, enigmaticblue was already taken, so I became enigmaticblues, due to the play on words, as I do tend to be rather blue at times, heh, and "The Enigmaticblues" seemed like a fine title for my LJ.

So, there you have it. The strange part is that my internet handle has become as much a part of me as my RL name. So much so, that if someone were to walk up to me and call me enigmaticblue(s) or EB (as some shorten it), I probably wouldn't even blink. I even have a navy blue t-shirt with "enigmaticblue" on the front, because that name is as much a part of me as my given name.

So, to balance out my (okay, yes) slightly bitchy post from earlier, I bring you these delights.

 photo tumblr_ncbsjcfsSY1qdlh1io1_400_zpsdmvsc0sm.gif

I keep staring at this gif and laughing my ass off. If there was ever a, "WHAT THE FUCK IS IN MY MOUTH? I HAVE BEEN BETRAYED!" gif, this would be it. I adore it. I feel this way whenever I'm tricked into eating something gross.

This quote, which basically describes the trajectory of my life:

Cut for language )

And then there's this quote from Orlando Jones about slash fiction. You can read the whole article, comparing his attitude to Benedict Cumberbatch's, but maybe just stick to the quote if you don't want to be disappointed:

“I like the slash, and I think I like it because I feel there are so many people who are under-represented—or not represented at all—in mainstream Hollywood entertainment. I really enjoy the fan fiction that embraces character and themes that showcase those people—their love, their desires, their passions.

“I think that’s really cool—and I hope the show as it continues embraces that more, because that’s an opportunity to tell stories that other people might not be familiar with. I mean, there’s slash of me and Ichabod… that’s like, ‘What?!’ and then I read it and it was really well-written.

“I get it—it’s another way to go but it’s no less valid than what we’re doing and it’s certainly interesting, so I really get a kick out of that. To read fan fiction and to see fan art and to watch other people’s artistry paint different colors on top of what we’re doing… how can you be mad at that? That’s just completely awesome!”

And there, my friends, is an actor who really gets it, but from all signs, he's a fan who happens to also be an actor. Bless the man. May his awesomeness reign forever.

So, this happened:

Talk about catchy, hilarious, and really kind of awesome.

As per usual, I am late to the party. I'll probably do a double post tomorrow to catch up.

BERJAYA

Day 1: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

How to choose, how to choose. I kind of did this the other day when I posted my list of what I'd written this last year, but I figured I'd go ahead and do one fic per fandom I write in commonly.

1. Now and Always: this fic was one of the last I wrote for the Buffy-verse, and I think it shows my growth as a writer. In many ways, this story was my farewell to BtVS.

2. Man of the World is one of my favorite Ats fics. It's also the first Wes-centric fic I wrote that was completely separate from BtVS, and I love it for many reasons.

3. I have a hard time choosing one SPN fic, mostly because I feel as though I came to SPN fandom as a more mature writer, and so I still really like a lot of my fics. But if I'm going to choose a fic that I'm very proud of, and that doesn't get a lot of love, I'll go with And Ten Thousand Fall, which is gen, and possibly one of the most unique fics I've written. And it doesn't get a lot of love.

4. Even the Blind Will See Our Love, which was an experimental Bones fic. I love how this turned out.

5. The Help of a Steady Hand was my first threesome fic, and I'm incredibly pleased with how it turned out. I think I managed to balance the complicated relationships in a way that did justice to all the characters.

6. Steady As She Goes is one of my first SGA fics, and my first and (so far) only genderbend. I wrote it for [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo, and I think I did it in a different way.

7. The Hour of Need, which is an SG-1 fic I rewrote about six times, but I think I kind of love it. For some reason, I love writing fic from Cassie's POV, and I'm happy with how this turned out.

8. Hold On Hope, which is a Sentinel/SG-1 crossover, and the first crossover I wrote that didn't involve shows in the same universe. I think I balanced it rather well, and I'm already planning sequels that will allow me to address issues nothing else will allow.

And now, for [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx's SGA meme:

Day 1: List your three favorite standalone SGA fics.

Oh, crap. HOW HARD IS THIS?! I think I'm going to have the same problem tomorrow on the Snowflake meme, because I feel like I'm doing a disservice to all those stories I'm not choosing. But with that disclaimer, off we go:

1. The Path Less Traveled. I'm normally a John/Rodney shipper, but this fic really made me buy John/Teyla, which is really hard to do. And that's why I'm reccing it, because a story that makes me buy a pairing I don't normally 'ship is an awesome story.

2. Theory of Everything, which is just so awesome, I can't even find words. If you haven't read it already (or if you haven't read all of [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27's work), you need to run in that direction. Hey! What are you still doing here?

3. One of the very first SGA fics I read, and the one that probably most influenced some of my own writing, including my SPN fic, Somewhere Back of the Sun, was A Farm in Iowa. SO MUCH LOVE for this story. It's gorgeous, but it also warms me to my toes. If I ever need to read a story that makes me feel good about the world (and the Midwest!), I read this one.
jerusha: (fanfic writer)
I have had this essay in my mind for a while now, but I kept forgetting, and one thing or another would distract me. Now, however, I'm grateful for the distraction from real life, and a pan-fandom discussion about Mary Sues has cropped up (again? I think).

I'm not sure I have any conclusions, but I have links! And thoughts! Is that good enough? )
jerusha: (castle)
So, last night's Castle: we've got Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Aldis Hodge (Leverage), and Leonard Roberts (Forrest Gates, from Buffy) or not? Whoops. From the brief glimpses, it looked like him. Hee! I love playing "spot the guest star". Watching CSI is awesome for that, and apparently Castle is too.
jerusha: (fanfic writer)
The Sandlot was the first BtVS archive that I found, other than fanfiction.net. I sorted through fics like you wouldn't believe until I found a story by...hmm...KellyHK, maybe? Fanfiction.net had put a stop to putting any NC-17 fiction up, and the author had started posting on FF.net and left a link to The Sandlot. My world opened up, and I began to discover just how many other archives were out there. It's also the first archive that hosted my fic.

So, yeah, the Sandlot holds a very special place in my heart.

A year ago, it went down because of some domain troubles, and through the power of donations, it went back up. There are stories there that simply can't be found anywhere else online, and so it's worth it to me to donate a little bit to keep it going. Or, in Zola's words:

It's just about time to renew the Sandlot website.

There have been several donations already, thank you VERY much to the
people who remembered.

We need to collect about $200 to pay for this year. Donations may be
made through paypal (you can use my email zola@zolaweb. com) or if you
want to send a check or money order privately, just mail me and I
will send you the information.

Zola

There's also a donation button on the Sandlot front page, so that's also an option.
jerusha: (leverage- penny for your thoughts)
Okay, so I've caught up Eleventh Hour and realized that the first episode had Riley (Marc Blucas), and the most recent episode had Mrs. Riley (Ilana Milicevic).

Now I'm catching up on Leverage (I <3 that show), and in the most recent episode I've got Jonathan (Danny Strong) and Holland Manners (Sam Anderson). Hee!

I'm actually doing pretty good tonight. I've realized that I have this cycle, where the hormone-induced depression will get really bad for a day or two, and then when it lets up I'm too emotionally exhausted to feel much more than irritation or general contentment. So, the plagiarist hit me at the perfect time. It seems the righteous anger cleared out the lingering depression and left me in my zen state.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still pissed off about this whole thing, but it's also reminded me of why I'm in this fandom. The way everyone has been combing this (insert obscenities I'm not angry enough to say here)'s journal, matching up icons/banners/fic/essays to the right person, expressing their disgust at her actions, contacting the creators concerned, reporting it to [livejournal.com profile] stop_plagiarism, etc. has been really heartening. It's reminded me that we take care of our own. It doesn't matter if you're a reader, a writer, a creator of graphics, or anything else: We Take Care of Our Own.

And that's why I'm proud to be a part of this whole crazy thing we call a fandom.

Oh, and the icon was created by the talented [livejournal.com profile] skytalon, words by [livejournal.com profile] redwolfoz.
