Track and Baseball

District track meet—Elle was 1st in 100 hurdles and 2nd in 300 hurdles with personal best times in both. She did great! 🎉🎉 I have a really good video of her way out ahead of everyone else in the 100 hurdles but I can’t upload it here, dang it. 🙂 Super proud of this girl who has never run track till this semester and is killing it. She is ranked in the top 3 in the state for private school 8th grade girls.

While we were at Elle’s track meet, Grandpa took Jack to his baseball game. We got finished in time to watch most of it, including Jack getting a hit! He also made two great catches and threw to first base to get two kids out. Great playing, Jack! Miles is one of his coaches and when I took the pic of Jack and Miles at home, Jack told me to caption it “best coach ever!” He’s so cute. Loves his Daddy, that is for sure.

We spent the night and enjoyed chatting with Sarah and Miles after the kids went to bed. Rich and I are night owls so we stayed up and watched a movie called “Metal Lords” while everyone else was asleep. It was really fun and cute about some metal head kids wanting to compete in a battle of the bands…sounds formulaic, and it was, but had some hilarious moments and a pretty good story all in all.

The next day we saw the kids off to school and decided to drive home the back way through Canton instead of the interstate which just seems to get busier and busier and more stressful every time we go to Tyler. We liked the state highway so much better! I wanted to stop in Canton and get a late breakfast so we ate at the Latham Bakery and then wandered around the square.

*”Pony Expresso”–right or wrong?? Please note Peace St with flowers. I love a cute little town square with the requisite courthouse in the middle.

Track Meet and Visit in Clyde

I was back from Tyler for one day and then we went to Clyde to see Ally’s track meet! We are busy this time of year with all the grandkids’ activities! We went to dinner with Susan before the meet, then met up with Corey at the track. Aidan was working so we didn’t see him that night. Ally only runs in the 200 so we had a lot of waiting around before we got to see her race but that was a good time to chit chat and catch up with Susan and Corey. Ally worked hard out there and ran her best but ended up coming in 5th. Then the sky turned ominous so we were glad to get outta there, but happy to see her and to hang out with everyone for awhile!

The next day Susan and Corey were at work but we picked up the kids and Ally’s friend Bailey to take them to lunch at Whataburger. Their request…they’re cheap dates! LOL Since we hadn’t seen Aidan for his birthday this year, we gave him his card and some cash at lunch. Then our quick little visit was done and we headed back to Dallas once more.

Track Meet and Tyler Visit

I drove over to Tyler to watch Elle’s track meet, but first Sarah and I took Jack to a friend’s because he had a baseball game. He called Rich to tell him I’d made it safely and asked “Do you know what Gigi is doing?” Rich said no and Jack replied “She’s going to a track meeting without you!” We cracked up about the “track meeting.”

Wow, Elle is a powerhouse on the track just like she is in soccer. That girl is so athletic! She had never run track before and certainly never done hurdles before but she’s been winning the 100 hurdles at each meet and has been in the top 3 in the 300 hurdles. She was also on the 4×400 relay which came in first. So much fun to watch her and definitely brings back memories of many hours spent at track meets with her Aunt Bonnie, who was also a great hurdler!

When the next morning was stormy and we were under a tornado watch, I decided to stay till it calmed down and go home in the afternoon. Sarah hadn’t had time to make the boys’ lunches that morning so she told them she’d drop something off for them. We went to pick up lunches and she ran Beck’s into his school for him. We thought we would just eat with Jack at his school and he was so excited to see us. He asked me what I was still doing there and I told him I’d stayed because of the weather. He said “will you be there when I get home?” and I said no, I needed to go back to Dallas. We enjoyed our lunch and played a matching game with Jack; of course he beat both of us. We constantly laugh about “young brain cells.”

Sarah and I ran some errands and then I just decided I might as well stay one more night. LOL We went to get Jack from school and he asked “what are you still doing here?!” Had a fun night with everyone and they even talked me into doing a TikTok routine which I wish I could upload here but I can’t add videos. It was quite hilarious.

The next morning I said my goodbyes and Jack said, “what if I come home and you are still here?” I said that would be pretty funny…maybe I would just move in. He said to be sure to bring Grandpa and Ajax.

And just like that, the snow is gone

Bonnie and I went to “hot yoga,” OMG, it was definitely hot! I haven’t worked up a sweat like that in a long time. We went to Amarillo High, the kids played and I walked the track while Bonnie worked with some of her hurdlers. It’s fun to see her coaching again but this will be her one and only year coaching in middle school. Next year, she moves to teaching algebra and won’t have time to coach along with her classes and tutoring her students.

We also had some more chess playing, walked the dogs, and had a bunch of fun hanging out with these cuties.

Quick Little Road Trip

Last week we took off for Clyde, TX to watch granddaughter Ally play softball, then on to Amarillo to watch grandkids Emery and Luke run in separate track meets.

We arrived in Clyde around 3:30 PM on Thursday, visited with Susan for a bit as it was her day off, and then the kids got home from school.  Corey came in from work and we went out to eat before the game, which wasn’t scheduled to start till 7:45 on a school night, which I thought was pretty late for 11 year olds!  Ally had to be at the field an hour ahead of time so we all headed over there and enjoyed sitting at a picnic table talking and laughing while waiting for the game.  I guess the game before theirs started late because Ally’s never got going till after 8 PM.  Last year, she was on a pretty good team and I was amazed at how well those girls could hit the very fast pitches coming their way.  I just assumed this year’s teams would be even better.  Well, I would be wrong! LOL Unfortunately neither team had anyone who could pitch worth a flip so it was really a battle of the “walks.”  Seriously, almost every kid got up to bat and was walked on balls or hit by the pitcher and walked.  Additionally, the catchers couldn’t catch the balls the pitchers were throwing so they were constantly chasing the balls down and this led to girls stealing home and scoring runs besides the runs they were scoring by being walked home.  They were only permitted to get 6 runs each inning and basically walked that many in each time (or scored by stealing).  It was SO tedious!  Those poor girls!  Thankfully for all, the game was also timed so eventually time ran out and they were allowed to finish the inning they were in, which I think was only the 3rd or maybe the 4th at most.  Ally’s team lost by 1, mostly because the other team batted last. Or should I say walked last?!  It was really sad and I hope they will all improve as the season wears on.  Despite the game, we had a lot of fun with Susan, Corey and the kids and discussed their upcoming visit to Dallas in the summer. We always enjoy having them here with us!

We spent the night in Abilene with our friend Karen since Corey’s grandma had come to town and had already planned to stay with the kids before we decided to come.  We had fun visiting with Karen, though it was so late by the time we got to her house that none of us stayed up too much later as she had to work the next morning.  We slept in a little bit and then got back on the road to Amarillo on Friday.  At least it is a little closer to Abilene than it is to Dallas so we had a relatively short drive compared to leaving from here.  We arrived just as Bonnie was getting in the car to pick up Luke from school so I rode along with her while Rich stayed at the house with Ada who didn’t want to go.  The kids are really entertaining and funny and we had a nice dinner at home, then watched “The Greatest Showman” before bedtime.

The next morning Luke had his track meet, which was super cute and funny to watch.  Their track meets just consist of various relays so there were no individual events but Luke ran in 4 or 5 races and seemed to have a great time.  He was a pretty fast little runner and his former track star mom was proud!  We came home for a couple of hours, then went to Emery’s meet in the afternoon.  Again it consisted of relays only but the older kids were more organized and looked good in their races. Emery has a long stride and did very well in her events. Watching track brought back lots of memories of Bonnie running in middle school, high school and college.  I am not sure how many hours I’ve spent at track meets in my life but it’s gotta be up there!  Once a track mom, always a track mom, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the kids.

Sunday we got up and had a nice breakfast before the long drive back to Dallas.  It was a bit of a whirlwind trip but we loved seeing everyone and getting to be involved in some of the kids’ activities.

As an aside, Emery always has some funny quips when we see her.  This time she was doing cartwheels and round-offs in the house so I told her she is really good at it and maybe would want to go to gymnastics. She paused for a moment as if thinking it over and then said, “No, I prefer to be self taught.”  That girl cracks me up.
