It’s Girl Scout Cookie time! Long ago I was a Brownie and then a Girl Scout and actually stayed in scouts till I was almost a teenager. My mom was very involved as our troop leader and then part of the Girl Scout Council for our district, later one of the women in charge of the GS camp when we were stationed in Germany. While we were overseas, we learned the traditional scouting skills and got to do lots of fun activities like camping in the Black Forest, visiting historical sites in Germany, and taking a train to Luxembourg where we stayed in a youth hostel, enamored of some European teen boys who were flirty and cute even if we were a bit young for them. At some point, my friends and I didn’t like our troop leader (not my mom) and fell out of love with the Scouting experience. We were going to be teenagers and it was not so cool. I think my mom was disappointed and a little embarrassed that she was so involved in Scouts and her own daughters had quit. But she continued for another year or two without us and I’m sure she influenced other young girls with her positivity, caring attitude, and fun demeanor.
None of my daughters were interested in Scouts when they were growing up so the tradition died out with my sister and me, though I always looked for those cookie sales! When I was a kid, we had to walk door to door and try to convince people to buy a box or two, but now it’s very streamlined with internet ordering or kids sitting at tables outside the grocery store hawking their wares. This year friends from the Funky East Dallas Democrats and from my Buy Nothing group had daughters selling cookies and I wanted to support them both (or that was my good excuse for ordering a bunch of cookies!) One came over with her mom and brother to deliver my order and the kids both loved Ajax so much! He jumped in their laps and they took turns holding him, arguing a little about whose turn it was. 🙂 The young boy said he didn’t really like cats but by the time they left, he said Ajax wanted to come home with them. So cute. I told them to come back any time! The other sweet little Scout braved the cold weather to deliver to my porch and chat a bit. It was enjoyable seeing these cuties and I hope they are enjoying their Scouting days!
I’ll have to look for some of my old Girl Scout photos and post them sometime. 🙂 But for now, I’m having a couple of cookies!
