Hangares metro station[b] is a station on the Mexico City Metro in the city's borough of Venustiano Carranza. It is an underground station with two side platforms serving Line 5 (the Yellow Line), located between Terminal Aérea and Pantitlán stations. It opened on 19 December 1981, providing service northwest toward Consulado station and east toward Pantitlán station.
The station services the colonia of Federal, along Avenida Fuerza Aérea Mexicana, located next to Mexico City International Airport. The station's pictogram features a biplane inside a hangar, reflecting its proximity to the airport's hangars.
In 2025, the station had an average daily ridership of 4,399 passengers, ranking it the 183rd busiest station in the network and making it one of its least-used stations.
Location and layout
[edit]Hangares is an underground metro station located on Avenida Fuerza Aérea Mexicana in Venustiano Carranza, Mexico City.[3][4] It serves the colonia (neighborhood) of Federal.[3]
Hangares metro station has two exits serving Colonia Federal. The northern exit is located on Avenida Fuerza Aérea Mexicana, while the southern exit is at the corner of Calle Correos y Telégrafos and Calle Asistencia Pública.[3]
Hangares metro station is located between Terminal Aérea and Pantitlán on the line.[3] The station is serviced by the AICM shuttle bus service, which operates between Terminals 1 and 2.[5] Also, Route 11-C of the city's public bus system services the area.[6]
Near the station, a pedestrian bridge known as "MacPuente" is used as an informal observation deck where people gather to watch airplanes land and take off.[7][8]
History and construction
[edit]
Line 5 of the Mexico City Metro was built by Cometro, a subsidiary of Empresas ICA.[9] Its first section, which includes Hangares station, opened on 19 December 1981, running from Pantitlán to Consulado stations.[10]
The tunnel between Hangares and Terminal Aérea stations was constructed using slurry walls built with the Milan method.[9] It is 1,153 meters (3,783 ft) long.[11] The section in the opposite direction, toward Pantitlán, ascends from the underground level to grade level and is 1,644 meters (5,394 ft) long.[4][11]
Name and pictogram
[edit]Hangares metro station's pictogram depicts a biplane inside a hangar symbolizing its proximity to the hangars of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).[3][12]
Incidents
[edit]After the 2015 Oceanía metro station train crash, Hangares metro station was temporarily closed for repairs.[13] From 1 to 16 March 2020, Terminal Aérea, Hangares, and Pantitlán stations were closed due to a gasoline leak at a nearby gas station.[14] Additionally, from 23 April to 15 June 2020, Hangares metro station was temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico.[15][16]
Unlike other key metro stations that were renovated to accommodate the expected tourist demand ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Hangares metro station did not undergo any major renovations. La Jornada reported in March 2026 that the station had damp walls, saltpeter buildup on the ceilings, a grated drain with leaks, rusted metal structures, sheets and wires used to cover leaks, nonfunctional lamps, water stains, and no clocks on the platforms. The water-related issues worsen during the rainy season.[17] In the same year, a guide rail expanded in the section leading to Terminal Aérea station, reportedly because of heat, causing a partial closure for most of the day on 7 May.[18]
Ridership
[edit]According to the data provided by the authorities, before the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public transport, commuters averaged per year between 4,800 and 5,200 daily entrances between 2014 and 2019; the station had a ridership of 1,772,609 passengers in 2019,[19] marking a decrease of 721,611 passengers compared to 2018.[20] In 2019 specifically, Hangares metro station ranked as the 188th busiest station out of the system's 195 stations and was the second least used on the line.[19]

Notes
[edit]- 1 2 3 The data here is limited to the most recent ten years to avoid excessive listings; earlier figures can be found in this page's history or on the Mexico City Metro website. To calculate the average daily ridership, the annual total is divided by 365 days (366 in leap years), with decimals omitted from the result. Each station per line is ranked individually, as the system counts transfer stations separately. The percentage change is calculated automatically using the data from the current year and the previous year.
