fannish networking

Real update tomorrow. Right now, though:

BERJAYAcopperbadge is doing a fannish job fair. It's up to seven pages of comments. And when I read the posts, I keep thinking, "This person should talk to [person I know]!" but I don't want to annoy all y'all with a bunch of e-mails. So, if you have some free time, don't hesitate to stop over there and see if there's anyone you could help out. Not everyone is looking for an actual job, either--some are asking for advice or resources.

(At least two linguists are looking for advice. Just saying.)

In other news, the Bears suck. I'm ready for football season to be over.

There are spoilers flying around like mad for the next two Doctor Who eps, and so far I've been good and not peeked, but, man, is it tempting--especially after last week's trailer.

In other news, our dryer is broken. Well, that's not quite accurate: It's working fine; it just doesn't know when to stop working--when it gets to the end of a cycle it keeps right on going. The only way to stop it running is to not let the door close completely. It's annoying, but it could be much worse. I called Sears on Monday and scheduled a repair person for this morning, I thought, but when I called to check, they said, no, it's Friday. What bugged me about that was, they didn't even apologize; they just assumed that I wrote the date down incorrectly. Nothing like a company with the attitude, "The customer is always wrong." Sheesh.

But, anyway, with any luck on Friday we'll have a dryer that stops when it's supposed to. And at least I can do laundry in the meantime.

And, in the really good news department, it looks like that company I've been talking to is going to hire me to do some work. It's not finalized--I'm going to be talking to the guy on Friday--but it looks good. They'll be paying me on a project basis, so I honestly don't know how much I'll make over the next few months, but it should work out to a decent hourly rate, at least. Yay for that. I'll just be happy to have something else to put on my resume.

updates galore

BERJAYAtardis_bigbang went live! Yay! And so far there have only been a few glitches--it's running very smoothly, knock on wood.

House: Last week the painters finished in the master bath and master bedroom. The rooms look great. We've now decided that as long as all the furniture is out of the master bedroom, we might as well take out the carpet, which is in horrible shape, and put in a hardwood floor. So, in those two rooms, we still need:
click if you're interested; this got kind of longCollapse )

Job: Potential employer asked me to sign a non-disclosure agreement and asked for two references. E-mailed info about the references and asked where to fax the agreement to. Feeling somewhat confident but trying not to get hopes up.

Other job: My Wednesday GMAT class is on session 4, and I'm starting a Tuesday class tomorrow. If I get the real job, I'm planning on quitting Kaplan--it's been fun, but it's been over five years, and I'm ready for a change.

Teeth: Still there. Still on target for November, I hope. It's been just over 13 months since I got the braces on; I haven't been feeling as enthusiastic about posting photos because they're just not moving as much now, but they're definitely looking good. Right now we're trying to get the top front teeth moving up, which is kind of weird. The threat of rubber bands is still there. Ick.

Miscellaneous: I donated platelets for the first time on Friday; it was interesting. They put a needle in just one arm--the machine takes the blood out, pulls out the platelets, and returns the corpuscles through the same arm. So you have to watch the screen and pump during the "draw" phases but not during the "return" phases; I kept messing that up, but it seemed to work. The whole thing took about an hour--next time I'm bringing a DVD. And next time I'll donate both whole blood and platelets; there wasn't enough time for both.

Anything else? If I've left out anything you want to know, feel free to ask.

Matt's mother is the most unrelentingly negative person I know. I wish I could say that she's going through a rough time and will get better eventually, but the truth is, she's been like this as long as I've known her, and it's just getting worse as she ages. I feel like I just spent three hours with Marvin the Paranoid Android.

We're leaving for South Carolina tomorrow for our nephews' high school graduation, and, yes, she's coming along. Joy. I'm looking forward to spending some time down there, but the trip itself is going to be seriously not fun. And when we get back, I need a break from her for maybe three or four days--that would help a lot.

On the plus side, BERJAYAtardis_bigbang continues to be ridiculously fun. It looks like we're going to be the biggest Big Bang fest so far--at least, until SGA's next round beats us out--and we've got the best bunch of participants ever.

Also, I ran four miles yesterday in under 44 minutes. That might not sound impressive, but, believe me, by my standards it's miraculous. I'm just afraid it'll never happen again.

Still no news on the job front. I'm starting to wonder whether I should give the guy a call or not. *dithers*

house stuff, continued

We're having the master bedroom and master bath painted this week, so this weekend's project has been cleaning everything (and I mean everything) out of the bedroom. Whee. We're almost done--right now I'm taking a break while Matt sorts all the crap that had accumulated on the top of his dresser. It was a rather impressive pile. I need to get the bed stripped, but he's using it for sorting right now, so.

And we've been thinking, as long as we're emptying the room, we might as well replace the carpet--it's 12 years old, and it wasn't installed all that well in the first place, so it's time. Looks like we'll be sleeping in the guest room for a few weeks. Again, whee.

It'll all be worth it in the end, right?

No news on the job front, by the way--I'm hoping to hear something early this week. Please keep those vibes coming! *crosses fingers*

Oh, you may have gathered from my last post (a week ago! sorry!), we went to a White Sox game last weekend. We were given tickets to the Jim Beam club--free parking, free food, free drinks. It was fun. And, yes, that picture was taken from my seat, with my cell phone. I could get used to that... not that I'll have the chance. [g]

life is full of surprises

I have a friend who works for a company that does consulting in the travel industry, and she's trying to get me working for them as a business analyst. It would be perfect--I'd be a consultant, not an employee; it would probably be around 25 hours a week most of the year; and it involves getting data in order, crunching statistics, putting the results into a legible format, and setting up procedures to make the whole process run smoothly--all of which is right up my alley.

So if you wouldn't mind sending some getting-hired vibes in this direction, I wouldn't complain.

I'm actually paying a company to help me get my resumé together--I haven't updated it in a couple years, and I haven't had a job like this before, so I really need to present my work history in a way that makes it clear that I've got the skills they need. I talked to someone from that company tonight for a little over an hour. I think at first I was driving him nuts because I was going through things too quickly, but we finally got into a rhythm, and I think he at least has a good handle on what I've been doing. At the end he thanked me for an "engaging 72 minutes"--I'm choosing to take that as a compliment.

And that's that. I'm really hoping it works out, but it came up so suddenly that I'm not all that invested in it. And at least it's got me thinking about getting out there and finding something to do, if only to have an excuse not to spend so much time with Matt's mom.

speaking of my mother-in-law...Collapse )

One of Matt's brothers is coming up this weekend with his wife, and they're staying with us Monday night, so I really need to get the house cleaned. Really. It's good to have an incentive, but... yuck. I swear, if I get this job, hiring a cleaning person is the first thing we're doing.

I just spent a ridiculous amount of time today putting together a functional resume--it's needed to be done, and I saw a project manager position I'm vaguely interested in, so it seemed like a good opportunity to get it done. I'm sure it needs tons of polishing, but I sent it off anyway, so we'll see what happens.

I'd never make it as a writer, though. The whole process was pretty much:
1. Type sentence
2. Play solitaire
3. Type sentence
4. Play solitaire
... repeat ad infinitum.

This week I just haven't felt like posting much. We're in the process of moving my church's web site to a different host, so I've been scrambling about with that. Unfortunately, our current account is in someone else's name, so I'm now waiting for him to do the actual switch, however that works. We're all ready to go, at least. Finally.

And, since I have nothing original to say, it's BERJAYAthefridayfive:
