President Donald Trump has pushed out the three remaining members of the Election Assistance Commission, leaving the bipartisan agency in limbo as he rushes to remake how elections are run before this year’s midterms.

Trump fired Benjamin Hovland and Thomas Hicks, the Democrats on the commission, multiple sources familiar with the matter told ProPublica, which was the first to report the actions on its social media accounts. Christy McCormick, the Republican, was allowed to resign, the sources said.

The commission’s unprecedented dismantling alarmed voter advocacy groups and Democratic state election officials, who called the move “reckless and irresponsible.”

“The EAC plays a critical role in supporting state and local election officials,” Cisco Aguilar, Nevada’s secretary of state and chair of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State, said in a statement, “and it will again fall on Secretaries of State and other election administrators to fill the gap.”

A White House official wouldn’t confirm the specific actions taken but said in a statement to ProPublica that the president “reserves the right to remove individuals that may not be totally aligned with the important task of securing America’s elections and ensuring every legal vote is counted.”

“The Administration from the start has been working across all agencies and local partners to safeguard elections from fraud and abuse, and investing in a strong infrastructure to sustain that mission especially in the midterm elections,” the official said.

Hicks and McCormick did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Hovland declined to comment on his firing.

The commission was established in 2003 to set standards for state voting systems and to provide funding for upgrades.

Its four-member board is designed to be evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, all nominated by the president at the recommendation of congressional leadership and confirmed by the Senate. The fourth commissioner, Don Palmer, a Republican, resigned in April. By dismissing the commission’s remaining members, Trump can try to put forward replacements who may be more amenable to his demands.

In March 2025, Trump issued a sweeping executive order that directed the EAC to change the national voter registration form — which serves as the template for the forms in each state — to require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. Currently, voters in almost all states attest to their citizenship under penalty of perjury, but they are not required to provide proof.

The Trump-aligned law firm America First Legal had petitioned the EAC to change the form. The EAC posted a notice seeking comments, receiving hundreds of thousands of them in response, but had not yet held a vote.

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a group that advocates on election issues, said the departures are a “significant loss for one of the federal government’s few institutions explicitly designed around bipartisan governance.”

The commission has been plagued by partisan infighting and ineffectiveness, as well as chronic vacancies and a lack of funding. It’s made some progress in recent years, however, passing new standards for voting machines and creating new resources and recommendations for election officials. Often, the commission’s decisions were unanimous despite its partisan split.

Professor Carola Lorea of the University of Tübingen's Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology has published a comprehensive academic study on the Matua, a community of 50 million people scattered across India, Bangladesh and 32 other nations in the wake of evictions and forced migration. Despite national borders and natural barriers such as the Bay of Bengal Delta, swamps and the sea, the community's cohesion has only grown over the decades. Lorea's work represents more than 10 years of field studies into Matua life, and she describes how religious songs, drum rhythms and shared stories play a vital role in Matua society and have even made a protest movement possible.

Got up at 10:00 and had breakfast, then put in a small Shipt order of things I need before I leave for the cottage on Tuesday. Had coffee, puttered around while it got here, put it away.

Then I got all my recycling bagged and ready to go, plus got the garbage out of the garbage can. Tied it up. But something was in the garbage that I couldn't stop thinking about. Back a few weeks ago, I mentioned here that I cleaned out a box of stuff I'd had since Oldest Brother had his stroke. And in that box were two spiral notebooks of his. I threw them away, but couldn't stop thinking about them. One is just job and apartment searching stuff I think. The other... I don't know. I'll probably never look, but when it came down to it, I couldn't throw them out.

So I cut the bag open and pulled them out (understand I have very little, if any, wet icky garbage. Most of it is stuff like Keurig pods, popsicle sticks, the paper plates I use to give the cat his Fancy Feast, and other dry detritus, so the notebooks weren't damaged in any way.) I put them in an out of the way spot in the living room. I feel better about it now.

Anyway, then I showered and dressed, and took the recycling out and walked around the block. And then I took the garbage out and walked around the block again.

Then I lay down and played solitaire until 4:00. Then I went and picked up my laundry. I grabbed a small snack of truffle cheese and crackers, and then left to take the bag of the Kid's clothes and the hatbox to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's.

It started to rain when I was waiting for the 44 bus so that was unpleasant. It continued, though not too heavily, until I was at zer place.

We hung out, and put the stuff away in zer closet, and had dinner of General Tsao's chicken from Wegmans. I Teamed the FWiB. Then I called Middle Brother. He is fine, and they are going to get him his new CD player at the end of the month. [personal profile] mashfanficchick researched the CD that he wants replaced.

And I Teamed the FWiB again, and said good night, and then I left and came home by bus. The rain had stopped so that was OK.

I got here just in time to feed the pets, and start here.

And that was the day.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My recycling is out.

3. I took the notebooks out of the garbage.

4. Clean laundry.

5. The rain wasn't too bad.

6. Middle Brother is well.

Scientists Have Found Climate-Resistant Coral Reefs Around the World Totaling the Size of Wisconsin

A sophisticated AI-powered examination of coral reef resistance extrapolated into the future found that there’re about 64,000 square miles of coral reefs on Earth that could still be resisting climate change by 2050.

The common theory states that CO2 emissions create a greenhouse effect which warms the seas which causes coral reefs to bleach or even die, yet there are environments—as GNN has frequently reported—where corals seem to be more resilient.

It would be nice if Earth didn't have to reinvent reefs again, and could keep this version.

:: With his support at hand, Jules is called to a meeting with the Ambassador. She is determined to straighten out the mess that Ritter has caused, figure out how this supposed “archivist” fits in, and, as a moment of personal pleasure, give Jules his paycheck. Part of the Lodestar story arc in the Polychrome Heroics universe. ::

Pips held the door for Jules, offering a flicker of a smile to the taller young man. “Are you ready for this?”

“No,” Jules admitted, then waited for the troubleshooter to follow them into the conference room. A yeoman in uniform, about Jules’ own age, calmly set out insulated tumblers with travel lids, then arranged a cart of hot and cold drinks in the corner nearest the head of the oval table. “Please don’t get between Ambassador Loudmouth and the coffee pot,” the yeoman murmured in a honey-rich tenor. “I’ve been told that she bites.”

Jules patted the air, then paused. He made a show of checking something in his phone, then scrawled on the screen with a fingertip. “I’ll just make sure to get my tetanus booster before taking that risk.”

The yeoman’s shoulders trembled with suppressed laughter as he let himself out.

Well, maybe not all of them are your favorite songs, but an awful lot of straightforward songs that profess love or tell stories have origins and inspirations that might surprise you. In an obvious reaction to the Doc Pomus story from a couple of weeks ago, we get a trivia list about where those song ideas came from. It may have been a simple cultural or language difference that gave the song an entirely different meaning, like "...Baby One More Time," the song that put Britney Spears on the map. Or it may have been inspired by a person, and good luck figuring out who.

BERJAYA

And there are some that were honestly pretty easy to figure out, llike "Sweet Caroline." But only if you were around at the time. Or if you were like me and made a living off of music trivia.

it cooled down considerably out here (67º on tuesday which is positively frigid for july) and is now hot again. >.< sigh.

the summit at work is over (yesterday was the last day) and i have made notes for next year altho whether or not i remember that in eight months is a whole other thing. one of the japanese girls who was staying in the dorm apparently wasn't on the list and i got a panicked email about it which i didn't see until sunday, as i was off on friday and i don't work weekends. but i figured i should check my email JUST IN CASE because something always comes up at the very last minute and hey, something did! i found her on the list and emailed the guy in charge of the group and everything was fine because it usually is. lunch was reliably delivered early all three days - like, an hour early - but it was boxed lunches that didn't need to be refrigerated or heated up so that was fine. we had a poster session for which the posters were all printed too large which was probably our fault but not specifically my fault and, again, it was fine in the end. it's exhausting every year and people enjoy it every year and i'm not sorry it's over.

yesterday because the summit was a half day and everyone in the sponsoring group all worked really hard on it one of the guys on staff had us all over to his house for grilling and showing off his garden. (it's a nice garden and i'm not just saying that because it produces zucchini which is then turned into zucchini bread.) so i got to stuff my face (there were SO MANY BAGS OF POTATO CHIPS and i brought a large amount of three bean salad plus there were hotdogs and burgers and grilled zucchini and fruit and the one grad student brought rolled crepes which were delish) and hang with my coworkers and it was really nice and chill and a great way to end the summit. it also took me an hour and twenty minutes to get to the house from the ugly building where i work but only like thirty-five minutes to get home. traffic, man.

for the fourth my sister and i went to her friend e's house to eat and drink and schmooze and stay out of the heat (it was very hot and rain was forecast so we weren't in a hurry to sit outside in a field) and that was also fun. i brought the aforementioned three bean salad and friend e had ice cream cake for dessert. i do love a good ice cream cake. and her house has a/c. :D

i watched the boston pops and then the fireworks on tv when i got home and while fireworks are better in person the light show (with drones!) was just as cool on tv. they had a minuteman with a rifle and the bunker hill monument and the uss constitution and paul revere on his horse and the steeple of the old north church flickering with the two lanterns and a ship with crates being tossed over the side. it was very cool. jessica meir, one of the astronauts on the iss, has a boston connection so during i think the 1812 overture she joined the pops live from space. the giant screens on either side of the stage showed her floating in zero-g playing the piccolo with the rest of the musicians. how cool is that? right?

sunday i babysat [personal profile] tamalinn's house so she could get a new front door lock. i zoomed with the family unit and pet the dog and mostly it got me out of the house.

the us is out of the world cup and i'm not broken up about it altho i think we had a pretty good run, at least until balogun got a red card suspension and the orange shitgibbon intervened to get it overturned. yeesh. dude doesn't even know what a red card is. i mean i don't either but i'm not interfering with world cup rules. anyway we're out and i have no favorites so i just hope the last games are good ones.

apparently the england-mexico game was the most watched soccer game ever in the us. 44 million people tuned in. which, holy shit. today was the last boston game, france-morocco. france won.

speaking of the world cup, check out some of the world cup snacks you can get in us stadiums. oxtail egg rolls. caviar on hash browns. lobster rolls, natch. and i know it's old news that overseas world cup fans went nuts for american ranch dressing but i have to share that kraft announced plans to release a travel friendly ranch dressing set. by which i mean tsa compliant (3.4oz) packets of ranch. weird and adorable.

if that's not enough ranch for you then you can always get a ranch dressing squishable.

today i learned that one of my pi's is going on sabbatical for the next academic year in PARIS. not that i'm jealous or anything. but i do wonder if that means he won't need as many hours from me and if so how will i make up those hours. i assume his students will still be around and they'll occasionally need support (travel, assorted expenses, whatever) but is that going to be enough? one of my other pi's was on sabbatical this past year but he didn't go anywhere and never required a lot from me anyway.

the nuns are podcasting. specifically dominican nuns. for those of you who listen to podcasts and/or are interested in what the sisters have to say.

way back in the late 40s in idaho as towns and settlements expanded people ran into conflict with the local beavers. so the state decided to relocate the creatures. by dropping them out of planes. (the test subject was named geronimo.) parachuting into new territory was apparently less stressful for a beaver than being transported by car and then horse to its new home. the idaho fish and game commission even made a documentary about it so you too can watch parabeavers being dropped from a height (the whole process starts at 7:21).

Today was another building resident's move-out day - the same person who gave me most of her non-perishables a little while ago. Today was everything she had left in her fridge and freezer, and whatever else happened to be around. Some eggs, some frozen strawberries, a lime, frozen cubed ginger, oat milk, tahini, olive oil, soy sauce, mirin, a couple avocados, shallots, sesame oil, agave syrup, some cauliflower, and other ends and odds. I composted the oyster sauce and most of the cheeses immediately, and the rest's going to get used up in due time.

Some of that due time was tonight. For lunch next week, I swept the kitchen and used up the cauliflower, the shallots, some garlic cloves, some garlic scapes, the last onion I had around, some tomatoes, and a bit of a bunch of spices. I cooked the last of a bag of basmati rice, and mixed it all with a can of kidney beans. It wouldn't have worked as well without the two cups of cubed cauliflower. It needed some vegetables in there.

I took some cleaning supplies, some bathroom stuff, and $11.79 in dimes, nickels, and pennies. As a favor, I took a bunch of old pillowcases and duvet covers to the appropriate recycling station. As a favor, I'll be taking a bag of electronics - extension cords and whatnot - to another appropriate recycling station. A tiny wooden turtle and two cutting boards. Some fancy cookbooks I'll see about taking down to the Strand.

Someone else came by when I was there to grab some large pieces of furniture. I helped him move it, and he was impressed I had such an easy time of it. I've often said I go to the gym to help people move furniture. And today, it finally happened.

I didn't go to the movies, spending the afternoon logging some letters and doing the sweep-the-kitchen cooking instead, acting for instead of against my better judgment. It was still a good day.

I also found out James Ortiz is on Cameo, and while I don't know if he'll accept the request - others have turned me down before - it'll still be worth it to ask him if he'll do some poetry reading for me. A friend suggested Jabberwocky. I was thinking The Litany or For What Binds Us. I may go with the Gioia.

Yes, chalk on a chalk board, high pitched squeaking - like train wheels skidding on a rail, car alarms, barking, and high soprano or a high pitched voice. Also high pitched humming/whistling.

I had a friend who had it. She couldn't deal with movies being too loud, and had to wear ear plugs. She was constantly plugging her ears.

Iced Sesame Noodles

These iced sesame noodles have become my summertime bestie. Is it hot out? If so, there’s a good chance this is going to be on the table. I’m here to share the details before we run out of summer. Imagine a rotating cast of long, slurp-able noodles (soba, pici, somen, spaghetti, etc.) tangling with a creamy sesame sauce, topped with 4-5 easy toppings. That’s the basic formula. The noodles are served family-style in a large bowl of ice water. Everyone mixes up their own individual, custom portions. So good, so fun. Definitely a Japanese-inspired concept, dovetailing, in our house, with whatever is popping up at California farmers’ markets. I encourage you to incorporate whatever your family loves and the ingredients shining at your local markets.

Building an Iced Sesame Noodle Bowl

Aside from boiling the noodles, nearly everything else here can be prepared ahead of time. It’s part of what’s great about this and what makes it a weeknight-friendly meal. I like to toss some chopped veggies (whatever is on hand – broccoli, asparagus, etc.) in the pasta water after the noodles come out, keeping the cooking to a single pot. To summarize, here are the main components of the meal:

  • Noodles: Keep a selection of favorites on hand.
noodles floating in ice water surrounded by toppings and sesame sauce on a table
  • Homemade sesame sauce: make ahead and refrigerate for up to a week. Recipe below. Also, consider experimenting with almond butter and/or peanut butter in place of the tahini or sesame paste for another variation.
  • Toppings: I’ll list off twenty-plus favorites. Choose 4-5 for your meal.
  • Side veggies: And easy boost! As mentioned above, grab something that can do a quick boil in your pasta water after you remove the noodles. More ideas below.

five different noodles to make sesame noodles with

Let’s Talk about Noodle Options

I’ve done fantastic versions of this meal with all of the following. Think long and slurp-able on the noodle front. I also check my noodle labels to make sure they’re not wildly salted, to be honest, I’ve been caught off guard  on a number of occasions.

  • Soba: I love the combination of buckwheat soba noodles and sesame and soba traditionally works well with sesame sauces similar to this one. Soba is a frequent go-to when I make this recipe and cold soba, in general, is summertime wonderful. More soba noodle recipes.
  • Somen: These thin Japanese wheat noodles are a crowd-pleasing favorite. Especially if you have picky eaters that aren’t as receptive to brown noodles.
  • Homemade pici: A hand-rolled Italian pasta, if you’re up for more of a project, cold pici really makes this whole situation something extra special.
  • Spaghetti: Give whatever spaghetti you love a try. I love the Monograno Felicetti Farro Spaghetti for its texture and boosted nutrition profile (not sponsored, just a fan), and the farro plays beautiful with the creamy sesame sauce. Pictured here.

sesame noodles in a bowl surrounded by a variety of toppings

Sesame Noodle Toppings

Choose 4-5 different toppings. I feel like grated ginger is a non-negotiable here. So good. And I leave any spicy component out of the base sesame sauce so that each person can light up their bowls with whatever level of spicy they can handle.

  • grated ginger: peel ginger with a spoon and grate with a microplane grater into a small bowl. Key topping!
  • something spicy: favorites for this recipe include Calabrian chile oil, chile crisp, tobanjan
  • toasted seeds and/or nuts: za’atar, traditional gomasio, I also make a red gomasio-ish (pictured above) that I’ll post the recipe for soon, toasted peanuts, etc.
  • tomatoes: specifically, these roasted cherry tomatoes
eating sesame noodles with chopsticks from a bowl
  • crunchy bits: for example,  fried shallots or crispy jalapeño pieces (WB brought these home from TJ’s a few weeks ago)
  • pesto: a little dollop of pesto in your bowl along with the sesame sauce is pretty great.
  • lemon zest or chopped, preserved lemons
  • makrut lime leaves: thinly slivered
  • kale chips
  • chives
  • chopped scallions
  • grated carrots
  • hard boiled eggs, quartered

And as we move into later summer and early fall, and the weather is still hot enough for cold noodles, but the seasonal ingredients are shifting, here are a few other ideas:

  • thinly sliced, crisp apple
  • toasted pumpkin seeds
  • simple cauliflower
  • roasted cauliflower: This variation is next on my list, iced sesame noodles plus roasted cauliflower and some of the other ingredients in this recipe as toppings – mint, arugula, chopped dates, red onion, and a spice blend of toasted pine nuts, sesame, cumin, coriander, and red pepper flakes. It’s gonna be good.
noodles in ice water with ice cubes and citrus slices
  • Also! For the iced noodle bowl (above), play around. Add thin citrus slices – Meyer lemon, rangpur lime, kishu mandarin, orange, key lime are all recent favorites. You can also add fresh herbs or lime leaves or use a cold broth. I have a cold mushroom broth that works really well. The recipe for that one is in Super Natural Simple, in the back.

While You’re At It: Add a Side Veggie!

Broccoli florets, asparagus tops, green beans, yellow beans, corn – these are just a few of the vegetables I’ve cooked in a flash after cooking the noodles for the bowls. Boil for a mint or so, strain under cold water and serve on the side. Everyone loves to work the vegetables into their noodle bowls as well.

Facing both climate change and a crashing pollinator population, plants may be evolving to attract pollinators rather than adapting to a warming climate, and the trade-off has resulted in a steep decline in plants' rate of adaptation, according to a University of Michigan study. The researchers, studying morning glories, observed a 96% decrease in the population's rate of adaptation over nine years. The declining rate of adaptation could affect farmers, who deal with morning glory as an agricultural nuisance. The research is published in the journal Evolution Letters.

"Money were not an issue" is a bit of a tricksy phrase.

Do you mean I could buy anything and anyone in the world? Like, no amount too large, no cost beyond contemplating?

Or do you just mean I get all my basics provided? Bills paid, insurances, food, etc?

Because I'm talking about a situation where "if I need the money to buy anything, I have it" in which case, I'm not thinking about me, I'm thinking BIG SCALE.

--

1. What would you do right now, if money were not an issue?

Buy the Australian government. Everyone's for sale at the right price, and you said 'money not an issue'.

Actually, no, I would buy one of the major news/media companies networks. Straight up. Fire everyone, rehire a bunch of people, kill AI, the whole deal.

smaller scale

Oh, you mean personally?

Buy several properties. Townhouses to rent out to friends/people who are struggling. Do it up, solar, water tanks, garden beds, etc.

At least one land property up in the hills - probably about 2-3 acres. Same thing, although a little more intensive.

If we're not talking about the big broadscale kind of stuff, I'd get the roof replaced and the walls insulated, sort out some under-house storage spaces, and redo the garden.

2. What would you do for the next three years, if money were not an issue?

Sort out the house and the land.

Write that novel. (Yes, really. *sigh* I've been saying this for the last twenty-five years.)

3. What is bringing you the most joy right now that requires little or no money?

Fanfic writing.

4. What types of things do you find enjoyable that require no money?

Walking around the neighbourhood. Gardening (although a lot of that tends to cost money in inputs). Reading fanfic.

5. Is there anything you've been meaning to do for a long time, but put off because of money?

...I'm guessing getting the roof replaced and the walls insulated doesn't count?

Pay off my sister's mortgage? IDEK.

I'm managing the heat by running the ac 3:30-9:00, then turning it off for overnight.

Not Built in a Day: How Slavery Made the Roman Empire

The latter.. this is another favorite writer on the Romans (Emma Southon). Someone gave the book a one-star review because Southon drops the f-bomb. But slavers deserve the f-bomb.

As for the Raincoats, oh la!, I never dare let catsman near a Raincoats song, they're everything he'd hate! I love their second album, love it. catsman needs needs his music to have rules. The thing about the Raincoats is they avoided musical rules wherever possible. :-)

I posted YouTube video/audio of my favorite Raincoats song once, so, here are the lyrics:

Instead of the delusional insane multi dimensional mastermind Angstromg Levy sending the remaining Mark variants (plus veil mark
who survived thanks to Omni-Mark) into the wasteland dimension, but instead get sent into multiple worlds very different from their own dimensions, now stuck in these universes, these marks are left, lost, alone and not familar with these worlds and must navigate these worlds while even to their surprise find redemption from these universes heroes and helping their fight against their villians and the many
dangers they must face.

or form aliances with these worlds villains to rule or destroy these different worlds destroying, crushing or just killing anyone
in their way, but that alone is up to them to decide, redeem themselves and push through their experiences that caused them
to become fallen heroes or just down right evil to begin with...it's their choice.

Early, smaller rains [status, work]

It rained again yesterday, a bit more heavily in spots, but not quite the right spots yet.

I suspect the leafcutters are paying attention to the ambient humidity, though. We found two very enthusiastically foraging colonies this morning, which brings us up to 4 out of the 10 total that seems like a decent sample size to work with. (might go up to 11, though, because we barely got 30 foragers from the second colony)

No signs of any queens yet. More rain in the upcoming forecast.

When people think about geological faults, they usually think about earthquakes. Yet faults do not move only during earthquakes. Sometimes they slip silently, without generating noticeable shaking, releasing stress over hours or days through slow fault movements that remain largely hidden from conventional monitoring systems.

Faucet and hose repaired.  New trough standing by to be installed as soon as the old one is emptied (it is almost empty now), AND the overflow trough is full.  The overflow trough has 6 inches of water in it. That is because I watered this morning and it took a while for the tanks to recover.
Got a haircut. Short, short, short!
Getting ready for tomorrow's departure to Santa Cruz for the weekend.  Probably back on Sunday.

Look, it's not exactly easy to steal a shitton of money from a casino corporation.

They're paranoid as fuck, for starters, almost as paranoid as the company. As a general rule, you don't get nearly that rich by being anything short of obsessively protective of your ill-gotten gains. You're in the business of giving out hard currency to winners; you'd better be fucking sure that no one's hacking anything in your systems. Also, obviously, you have to have a plan for the thousands of rival corporations hoping for/plotting your downfall.

Basically, what I'm saying is that ART's idea of a relaxing vacation for its very first shore leave (yes, it had been a whole thing. For some reason Tarik had started it, and Pin-Lee and Mensah had gotten involved) was inadvisable from the start.

-

Or, Murderbot and ART go on a fun Vegas vacation.

ATTN: Capitan Seth and Perihelion Crew,

The Crew of the Perihelion is officially informed that the Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland's Annual Comp-Sci and Intelligent Design Fundraising Gala will be coinciding with your next registered shore leave. As per Administrations advice, it is recommended that crew holding senior positions make it a priority to attend as a representative of your department. Any other available crew is advised to also attend.

This year's guest list has already been mostly confirmed and it would be in good taste to respond with your crews attendance list promptly.

If unforeseen circumstance do occur that the Crew of the Perihelion is unable to dock on time, written notice would be appreciated.

Venue information and Dress code regulations are attached in the files below.

Safe Travels-

Dr. T. Reese,

PSUMNT MI Department Coordinator

SecUnit has to go to a gala for PSUMNT as a representative for the Perihelion. That means fancy outfits, being nice to people who haven't seen a SecUnit before, and maybe, sharing a dance, maybe.

«You feel unsettled,» ART said. Then, because it was an asshole, it followed that up with, «You also have eleven missed calls and twenty-two missed messages from your colleagues. I’ve informed them all that you needed a break from the talks and will be rejoining them tomorrow.»

“You don’t know that,” I told it. “Maybe I’ll get sick of sitting out here with you and go back to the meeting room.”

«You’re welcome to tell them that yourself.» ART was radiating a warm affection that made it hard to keep being annoyed with its presumptuousness. «I’ve also messaged Ayda that you’ll be joining her for dinner tonight.»

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re too nosy for your own good?”

Its affection turned distinctly lofty. «You should be grateful that I’ve decided to help you manage your life, you little shit.»

The war against the kaiju might be drawing to an end. A jaeger pilot discusses a nebulous future with its drift partner.

I had installed the mental health module but hadn’t toggled it on yet. Which is why I was now in my cabin arguing with a bossy machine super-intelligence over how many emotions I might be capable of having.

I had completed a total of one part of one step in the trauma recovery process and didn’t want to continue. Ever since we got the hell out of that system where ART got deleted and I thought it was dead, and I got contaminated and 2.0 sacrificed itself –

SecUnit.

I didn’t really want to revisit all that.

SecUnit, ART said more forcefully. Your stats are dropping.

Right. Get it together, Murderbot. It was probably too late to throw myself out the airlock.

The coffee machine was fucking haunted. Or something. I wasn’t sure what else it could’ve been—I didn’t even really believe haunting was possible, but what the fuck did I know? Maybe those supernatural serials were more true than I thought.

I made the rational choice and unplugged the machine.

° ° °

The little shit unplugged your coffee machine.

Coffee shop au that is 90% jokes and 10% lore.
