I told you about that tournament thing, right? Well, it's a schoolwide thing, and we're competing against two other schools, and I put my name in to be chosen, and now I'm the representative for my school for the contest. Yeah, I'm pretty excited, and feeling pretty confident, but I'm worried about the first... thing.

Okay... It's hard to explain without sounding like a loon, so let me just go slowly. A friend. There was a mistake when they picked the representatives, so there's two of us from my school, and I don't know the other gent too well aside from reputation. He seems nice enough but I can't figure out how his name got into the bloody goblet, and now he's given me a clue about the first task. He said it'd be dra live animals, and I don't know what to do.

He's got a reputation as a bit... unstable. But really, he's gone through a lot and I don't think he'd lie about this since lives are at risk.

Maybe I'll just take his word for it and start practicing.

Matilda, I should really just explain everything one of these days.

Dad --

You may have heard from others at the Ministry about this Triwizard Tournament that's being held at Hogwarts this year. Actually, I'm surprised you haven't written me about it already. Well, I've been doing some thinking, and a lot of people have been asking me whether I'm going to put my name in for consideration or not. I mean, on the one hand I'd love a chance to put Hufflepuff on the map. Most people look at my Housemates as wimpy flower-toting simpletons, and I'd be more than happy to show them we can hold our own (if I was chosen, of course). On the other hand, Dumbledore keeps talking about how dangerous this whole thing will be, and -- to risk fitting into the Hufflepuff stereotype -- I can't help but wonder if I should step back and keep my nose clean. I'm only a sixth year, there are kids older and stronger than me here who could probably do a better job than me.

I know what you're going to say, that I should put forth my best effort and try every day to improve myself, but like I said, I can't help wondering if entering this contest is really the best idea. If I want to work in the Ministry, I need to make top marks this year and next, and do well on my NEWTs, too. I'd be plenty busy with Prefect duties and school this year anyway. And there's this girl

I'd just like your honest advice. There's really no harm in my putting my name in anyway, since odds are I won't be chosen out of all the interested students here, but if my name goes into that goblet, there's a chance (however slight) that it will be chosen in a few weeks time. What do you think, Dad?

Hi. How've you been? I hope everything's well since the last time we spoke. Things have been really intense here, with the Tournament and everything that goes along with it. Between that, regular classes, and my Prefect duties I'm well worn out. But now I've got something else to concentrate on for a little while.

As I'm sure you know since you're a girl and girls go crazy at this time of year Valentine's Day is less than a fortnight away! I've always hated been wary of this holiday (is it really a holiday if the banks are open?), but for the first time ever I have a girlfriend and she's gorgeous and smart and perfect and I really want to impress her. I mean, I know she LIKES me, but I want to show her that I'm not just good for a quiet night in the castle, I want her to know I can (and want to!) go all out for her, too.

And well... You're a girl. What do you like on Valentine's Day? I don't really just want to get her flowers or chocolates or something, I want to do something sweet that she'll remember more than that. I love like her a lot, so... help?

Thanks for the Christmas wishes! It's good to hear from you, I feel like I've lost touch with your family since I left for school. But, that's boarding school for you, I guess. Things here are so great! I've been having so much fun using the magic stuff they've taught me, and made loads of friends and everything! Of course, that doesn't mean I've forgotten you lot back home. I'll be on my way home for the holiday soon, and then we can hang about all day just like old times. I say old times like it was so long ago, how foolish of me. Three months feels like so much more, here.

I've been practicing to try out for the sports team here, and come next fall I'll be tops, I hope. The game's called Quidditch and it's kind of like football except with more balls and different goals and things. But it's the same basic idea. I think you'd like it! It's too bad they only play it at a couple schools, and not very seriously, or I'd try to get us tickets to a game.

I've been thinking of you since I left, and Mark and the rest of your brothers as well. Say hello to them for me!

Mum--

Wanted to jot you a quick note to let you know that I'm doing well. I'm a bit homesick, especially for your shepard's pie! What we have here is good, yes, but not NEARLY so skrum scrumch tasty as what you make. Oh yes, thanks for sending me that batch of eclairs! They were wonderful, even if they were a little smashed by the time they got here. That owl really is too old to still be flying about, don't you think?

I've been wanting so badly to get involved with Quidditch. I'd LOVE to be the Seeker. I'm not sure I'd actually be any good, but some days I think I could maybe do it! Or maybe the Keeper. Or even just keeping score would be fun! I can't wait til I can try out. Did you or Dad play Quidditch when you were here?

I've got an examination in Potions tomorrow that I really should be studying for, even if I hate it a little. Like Dad says, what good is a head on your shoulders if it's full of air, har har. Hope all is well with you at home. Tell Dad I said hullo!

Dear Mum and Dad,
Mum asked me to write once I was settled, so I'm writing to let you both know that I'm safe, sound, and I'm officially a Hufflepuff! I was so nervous before the sorting. I half expected that Hat to find nothing in my head that suited Hogwarts and then I'd sit their for hours without the Hat saying anything at all and then I'd be laughed out of school and have to walk all the way back to Ottery St. Catchpole. The other kids seem really nice, and I'm trying to do like you said, Dad, and not be shy, and I think I'm on my way to making some freinds friends.

When we got down to the common room, they introduced the Prefects and the Quidditch team. Everyone seems so much older and bigger than me, but I plan on doing my best, like Dad always says. The only thing I don't like about Hufflepuff so far is that we live in the cellars. I miss my bedroom with the windows where I could see the sky before I even got out of bed in the morning.

I know you guys, Dad expecially, really want me to do well and make the family proud, and now that I'm here I feel more sure that I can do a lot. So don't worry, I'm going to work hard and behave! And I cannot wait to get on a broom, of course!

The other boys are going to play wizard's chess, and I'm going to try to learn, so I'd better hurry up if I'm to catch the game!
