Tencent had 2 character songs sung by well-known Chinese singers to mark the end of season.3; I'm going to miss you MDZS. It was a great three years^_^
"Stylistic translation"... I'm not sure what that means. Is it editing? And then they say "to make it easier for native English speakers to read"... And all the red flags are waving.
I've been sampling a lot of fan-translated danmei novels and to be brutally honest only 1-2 translators have the ability and/or experience to produce a comprehensible translation. Not talking about poetic language here, just a solid translation that isn't too messy.
Translation is one of those professions that is often misunderstood and frequently underestimated. Because it's an art, not a science, and so much depends on the translator's proficiency in the languages he/she is translating to and from. In addition to understanding the "soul of the language" which is something they don't teach you in school. Language doesn't come from a vacuum; it's an accumulation of a society/culture's beliefs/values/history. A word can be acceptable in English and incredibly offensive in Arabic because of the cultural connotations.
While I appreciate the efforts of fan translators, the majority of them don't possess the skills necessary for translation. All the debates and attacks on them seem pointless because in the end even they admit they're doing it for fun and in their free time. Though I do feel sorry for the author whose work they are translating. *winces*
Title: Hóng bǎihé Fandom: Mo Dao Zu Shi Pairing: LWJ/WWX Summary: Those who love you, leave flowers on your skin. You wait for his flower to bloom. Link:https://archiveofourown.org/works/24223096
Title: asymptotic Author: chinxe Fandom: Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù Pairing: LWJ/WWX Genre: Slash Summary: The members of the Lan Clan have never been particularly well-known for their good judgement when it comes to matters of the heart. Which is why it should come as a surprise to no one when Lan Wangji falls in love with an actual ghost. Warning: AU Link:https://archiveofourown.org/works/17759762/chapters/41904701
This was written in the early days of MDZS fandom but it still stands up to being read today even with the live-action and season.2 of the anime. What is striking is that LWJ and WWX are still the same in terms of virtues and character flaws though their method of meeting and communication is different. Add A-Yuan and bunnies to the mix, with WQ's sharp tongue, and it's no surprise this is often mentioned as a fandom "must-read".
Title: another day and you've had your fill of sinking Author: annadream Fandom: Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù Pairing: LWJ/WWX Genre: Slash Summary: Wei Wuxian was getting married. This is one of the rare fics that present a more balanced portrayal of JC after the end of the novel/ TV series, including the influences of the people most important to him. I really liked it because it doesn't whitewash the more problematic aspects of his character or all the pain that lies between him and WWX.
The Untamed, Ep.25: This is an emotionally charged episode with plenty of plot details and politics running underneath the main events. ( Read more...Collapse )
Lotus Pier looks really nice in the anime and the live-action did a good job trying to re-create it, including that pavilion in the lake. Of course, Madam Yu taking out her frustrations on WWX is unfair no matter how many times it occurs in any adaptation.
At least Yanli knows JZX thinks her beneath him and not that WWX ruined her engagement. I think fans don't give JYL enough credit for her strength of character and generosity. Not every female character type needs to be a warrior to be strong or admirable. Often it's the small daily battles that really test a person's mettle.
MDZS, season.1-ep.5 The rain duel is really beautiful. Every drop and shadow reflected on roof tiles and swords.
Wangxian get so many love scene tropes. Under a full moon, in a bamboo forest, under heavy rain. *grins* And with white magnolia trees framing their interactions in Gusu.
Challenge #2 In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Started with ST:TOS and KF:TLC which was before the days of the internet. Then it was Japanese anime fandoms with Sailormoon, Gundam Wing, X, RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon, Yukikaze. American TV: House MD, Supernatural, Prison Break, Hawaii 5-0, Person of Interest. Then a dose of Britishness in HP and BBCSherlock, with a dip into 007/Q from Bond and Harry Hart/Eggsy from Kingsman. Side trip into Yuri On Ice.
Fell head over heels for Steve/Bucky till Endgame ruined it and to which I still pretend that ending didn't happen!
Currently living in Chinese danmei fandoms MDZS and QQ.
In terms of fandoms, I guess I'm a serial monogamist with OTPs! XD
A kind soul wrote an introduction on Ao3 for MDZS writers. Please read it before attempting any fic. If only to save us readers the horrors of misrepresenting character relationships, their names, or even their honorifics.
Music is an integral part of MDZS in every adaptation of it. A kind soul on Tumblr has made a list of the songs. I'm including the post and the original link to it. All the songs are lovely and really add to the characters and story.
So The Untamed is on Netflix now.... I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, it gives more exposure to the work, actors, and profit to the author.
On the other hand... no this is definitely the negative part about having a very niche Chinese genre being introduced to mass Western audiences. The bad jokes and cultural confusion are easy to dismiss and/or overcome, it's the sheer sense of entitlement that is hard to swallow. American fans in particular are so fond of imposing their own cultural views, LGBT history, and righteous social issues on other parts of the world. Even to the point of completely ignoring that what is the norm in the USA doesn't occur in the rest of the world, nor would it work there.
When the MDZS fandom just started to become widespread in English-speaking circles of fandom, I spent a lot of time explaining things to newbies. Most of them were really young and eager to learn more about a foreign subject, but the Americans were really hard to talk down from their high horses. *sighs*
The Untamed, Ep.10-15: Lots of events happen here. One thing this live-action has going for it is that it never drags on. I don't think there's any episode that can be classified as filler. ( Read more...Collapse )
I've been cross-posting for quite awhile now, I think since LJ was bought by the Russian company. I won't leave until I have to, but it's good to have a backup.
