After a long trip, I finally returned to my old neighborhood.

Ella was watering flowers when she saw me.

“Adrian, is that you?”

“It is.”

“What brings you back?”

“I came to keep my promise.”

“What promise?”

“To marry you.”

She laughed. “We were kids.”

“I never forgot.”

“Too late. I’m already married.”

My stomach dropped.

Then she grinned. “Married to my job at the library.”

Relief washed over me.

“The heart with our initials is gone,” I said. “But I’ll make a bigger one if you let me.”

Ella smiled. “First, grab that watering can and help me finish.”

“Grandma, I can’t wait to grow up,” eleven-year-old Abby told her grandmother, who was braiding her hair.

Grandma Rose smiled. “Time doesn’t stand still. It will come soon enough. In the meantime, hold on to each moment before it’s gone.

She added softly, “Besides, I may not be around when it happens.”

Days before Abby’s eighteenth birthday, Grandma Rose suffered a stroke and passed away in her sleep.

The loss shattered Abby.

Looking up at the clouds above, she sobbed, “I want my grandmother back.”

She finally understood her grandmother’s words: some moments are priceless because they can never return.

The alley they once walked through to get to middle school was now covered in graffiti. He paused where he had once painted a small heart with their initials, but it was gone.

How time had flown.

When Adrian told her that he’d marry her when they grew up, Ella just giggled.

But fate had other plans. His father, a naval officer, was reassigned to Italy, ending their young romance.

The years passed, and they lost touch.

Ten years later, Adrian was back in the old neighborhood.

Was Ella still single?

He headed toward her street, ready to find out.
