They were sitting on the beach, watching the sunset. It was the moment when Liam said goodbye before being deployed to the Middle East.
“It won’t be long,” he said. “I’ll be back sooner than you expect. Then we can get married and start a family.”
Looking into his eyes, Sarah believed him. She just didn’t expect that he’d return in a casket.
Now, Sarah sat alone, staring at the waves as the sun dipped below the horizon. The chair beside her remained empty.
It was a reminder of promises left unfulfilled and a future that never came to be.

Seven-year-old Maya was blowing bubbles in front of a store while her mom shopped inside.
She had been told to stay on the steps so her mother could occasionally peek through the glass to check on her.
Suddenly, a man approached.
“Hey, kid,” he said, “I’ll take you home now.”
Before Maya could react, he led her toward a parked car.
Glancing out, her mother spotted them.
She burst out of the store, screaming, “Get away from my daughter!”
It was then that she realized it was her dear husband. “Darn it, Mike! You almost gave me a heart attack.”
