New Spain

Within the territories under the dominion of the Iberian monarchies, on both sides of the Atlantic, we seek to approach the cult rendered to Saint Iphigenia mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In addition to the specialized bibliography, we rely on the first European and American publications that gave news about this African saint, as well as on the brotherhoods that were the driving force of devotion. With all this, we have raised a geography of images to Iphigenia in sculpture and painting in three continents, and we show how the 1738 Carmelite model of the friar José Pereira de Santana dominated in the representations of the saint in Europe, Africa and in Portuguese America, not so in the American territories of the Hispanic monarchy, being these images particularly novel and some of them unpublished.

The work of the Paduan antiquarian Lorenzo Pignoria constitutes one of the most interesting examples of a general reflection on religion at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The short treatise analysed in this article, aims to insert a group of “deities” from Asia and the Americas within the project of the mythographic work of Vincenzo Cartari. Promoting an assimilation of these extra-European deities, Pignoria also proposes a singular visual theory of polytheism. In order to illustrate this innovative methodology, this work focuses on the complex narration through which the Paduan antiquarian manages to build an incorporation of a group of Mexican deities whom he had known by consulting pictographic documents in the Vatican Apostolic Library.

The Monarquía indiana-published in Seville in 1615 by Fray Juan de Torquemada-represented one of the most significant efforts to include Indigenous religions within a global view of religious diversity. As a product of a modern process of " mondialization " , the work of Torquemada reflected on the nature of Mesoamerican gods from a groundbreaking point of view. The Franciscan produced an evolution of the missionary methods and strategies used during the first part of colonial history. In the context of modern discourses on religion, the work of Torquemada does not represent only an "ethnographic" attempt to understand the complexity of Indigenous religions in order to promote evangelization. On the contrary, the missionary reflection on Indigenous gods established a key stage in the modern construction of a global theory of polytheism.

I testi raccolti in questo volume mirano a indagare, in una prospettiva storico-religiosa, il rapporto dialettico indissolubile tra Religione e Conquista che anima i processi del contatto tra il mondo europeo e le culture native del continente americano. Primariamente, il volume intende riconoscere una funzione dialogica e negoziale al concetto di Religione che, al principio dell'Età moderna, si impone come uno dei principali strumenti di "occidentalizzazione del mondo". In questa prospettiva, la Religione diviene dispositivo atto alla Conquista, da intendersi però non tanto ideologicamente come strumento pratico del dominio politico e militare, quanto, processualmente, come "arma simbolica", spazio, teorico e pratico, del confronto interculturale. Questa lettura vuole contribuire alla costruzione di una disciplina disposta a volgere il proprio sguardo ai processi di incontro tra mondi diversi, per elaborare una teoria storico-religiosa dei contatti culturali. In questa direzione, i processi legati alla Scoperta e alla Conquista del continente americano costituiscono un perfetto laboratorio di indagine, giacchè mostrano come le relazioni tra culture nella modernità abbiano avuto inizio grazie al codice della Religione.

Desde o início da colonização, o trabalho compulsório dos indígenas esteve entre as questões mais debatidas na Espanha e em suas possessões americanas. Nos anos finais do século XVI, os repartimientos, instituição de recrutamento de mão-de-obra nativa, estiveram sob o julgamento de franciscanos e jesuítas. Teólogos dessas duas ordens religiosas foram chamados a dar seus pareceres a respeito da licitude e legitimidade do repartimiento no México. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar e confrontar as duas visões sobre aquela instituição, avaliando e enumerando os seus respectivos argumentos.

Depuis le début de la colonisation, le travail forcé des indigènes a été largement discuté en Espagne et ses possessions américaines. Dans les dernières années du XVIe siècle, les repartimientos, institution de recruter la main-d’oeuvre indigène, ont été examiné et jugés par les jésuites et franciscains. Les théologiens de ces deux ordres religieux ont été invités à donner leurs avis sur la légalité et la légitimité des repartimientos dans le Mexique. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser et de comparer les deux points de vue sur cette institution, en train d’évaluer et d’énumérer leurs arguments respectifs.

Durante estos años especialmente difíciles ocurrieron varios tumultos en Guanajuato: lamentablemente la historiografía local ha descuidado su análisis, esto debido en parte a que se le presta especial atención a las circunstancias de uno de ellos en particular, el tumulto de la expulsión de los jesuitas, ocurrido en el año de 1767, que fue el que más impacto causó y más consecuencias produjo. Curiosamente éste fue también el último de una serie de tumultos en los que se vio involucrada parte de la población de la ciudad, es por ello de vital importancia la realización del presente estudio, que permita comprender y valorar de manera apropiada estos lamentables sucesos que precedieron al inicio del movimiento de independencia.

This presentation examines the status of a deck of cards that circulated in Mexico City around 1583. The deck contains 18 cards created by the second monopoly of playing cards in Mexico City under the administration of Alonso Martínez de Orteguilla, surviving today as a printer’s proof in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville. The set shows iconography regularly employed in Renaissance Tarot decks, such as figures representing Force and Temperance, together with portraits of the Mexica kings Moctezuma, and Cuauhtemoc, as well as representations of dancers and acrobats from prehispanic traditions.  Given the popularity of playing cards in 16th century New Spain, these cards both entered into, and to some degree created, a social context that allowed the circulation of what appear on the surface to be European games and images in Mexico City.  Yet the images, and probably game rules, resulted from the encounter of European and Prehispanic iconography and philosophical traditions. The representation of both cultural references in an European style situates the deck as an important element in the construction and dissemination of a new visual culture.
Through an multidisciplinary approach of Early Modern European books, prints, paintings, and playing cards, all objects that were employed for the education of the priviledged creole and indigenous population, as well as a consideration of books, traditions, popular festivities and games of prehispanic past. This presentation also addresses the probable role the popular and portable deck of cards with allegorical images had in the construction of the Mexico City society in the early years after the Spanish conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

During Spain’s “golden age (1475-1598) its citizens discovered and colonized vast territories in the New World, including the conquest of the Aztec Empire. This essay details the transfer of medical ideas and institutions to New Spain, the largest and most densely populated colony. The first section summarizes the state of medicine in Renaissance Spain, highlighting its university trained physicians and surgeons, their educational opportunities, licensing, and practices, often in gradually more secularized hospitals. Shifting focus to colonial matters the next section first depicts pre-colonial health conditions, including new and devastating epidemics introduced by the conquerors and new settlers. The organization and regulation of medical practice in New Spain followed closely along lines established in the mother country. Hospital foundations, mostly driven by the mendicant orders, established an impressive network of institutions in densely populated areas. Finally, medical practice sought to introduce the use of New World medicinal plants into their therapeutic regimen. Efforts to collect this information, including their identification, preparation, indications, and dosage were spearheaded by royal-sponsored expeditions.

Este trabajo busca explicar los hitos esenciales en la historia del Oratorio filipense de la ciudad de Puebla en la época novohispana. Pone énfasis en analizar el proceso de constitución y el programa espiritual que le dio sustento. Basado en información inédita, propone líneas susceptibles de investigación sobre el tema.

Resumen Este artículo explora las características formales y temáticas de la obra dramática de Fernán González de Eslava para mostrar la influencia del debate medieval en la producción del autor. A través del análisis de diversos coloquios de temas teológico, histórico y filosófico, se profundiza en el estudio del uso que González de Eslava le dio al debate para la transmisión de la doctrina y la persuasión de la audiencia. Abstract This paper explores the formal characteristics and the themes of the dramatic work of Fernán González de Eslava. The discussion is focus on the influence of medieval debate in the author's dramatic production. Through the analysis of different pieces the paper shows how the debate was used by Gonzalez de Eslava as a tool to educate and persuade the audience in to the religious Christian doctrine.

This article talks about Miguel Hidalgo, considered the precursor of the Independence of Mexico. This is a brief overview of his life and work, from historical sources and specialized studies. It is a contribution in the framework of the Bicentennial of the beginning of the Mexican Independence movement.

In an age of revolution, Mexico's creole leaders held aloft the Virgin of Guadalupe and brandished an Aztec eagle perched upon a European tricolor. Their new constitution proclaimed the Mexican Nation is forever free and independent. Yet the genealogy of this new nation is not easy to trace. Colonial Mexico was a patchwork state whose new-world vassals served the crown, extended the empire's frontiers, and lived out their civic lives in parallel Spanish and Indian republics. Theirs was a world of complex intercultural alliances, interlocking corporate structures, and shared spiritual and temporal ambitions. Sean F. McEnroe describes this history at the greatest and smallest geographical scales, reconsidering what it meant to be an Indian vassal, nobleman, soldier, or citizen over three centuries in northeastern Mexico. He argues that the Mexican municipality, state, and citizen were not so much the sudden creations of a revolutionary age as the progeny of a mature multiethnic empire."

Este libro aborda los cruciales años en que los vecinos de México reclamaron el lugar que les correspondía en la monarquía de Es-paña al comenzar el reinado de Felipe IV. Como integrantes de una ciudad que se asumía cabeza de reino hicieron valer su peso y privile-gios a pesar de haber nacido como un territorio anexado a Castilla. Entre 1621 y 1628, los vecinos de México pasaron de la obediencia a la rebelión y a la reconciliación con el rey de España. Esos cambios fueron manifestaciones de una misma configuración social que produjo equilibrios duraderos entre los poderes locales y la autoridad real. La sociedad que resultó de las conquistas del siglo XVI se transformó durante estos años; de igual forma, la dinámica equilibradora de sus lazos estructurantes se proyectó, hasta finales del siglo XVIII, cuando nuevas fuerzas llevaron a otras configuraciones.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, Franciscan martyr portraits became popular in monastic spaces of the Spanish viceroyalties of central Mexico. To visually construct the meritorious life of these martyrs, artists drew inspiration from hagiographic chronicles that described various Native rebellions, which featured the graphic depiction of the gruesome deaths of friars. The prospect of martyrdom enticed novices to follow in their footsteps in service to God, but also to the Crown, whose presence in to the northern territories of New Spain intensified during the period of the Bourbon reforms. In this essay, I explore this propagandistic approach to martyr images by analyzing examples anchored to the Franciscan missionary history of New Mexico.

Se estudia la cosmología y la explicación de los cometas desarrollada por fray Diego Rodríguez, primer catedrático de matemáticas de la Real y Pontificia Universidad de México, en su "Discurso etheorologico del nuevo cometa" (1652-1653). Se defiende que, conforme a la visión renacentista que privilegiaba la semejanza para la estructuración del mundo (Foucault, 1966), en el discurso cometario de Diego Rodríguez la utilización de analogías va a tener una importancia fundamental para la conformación de su visión celeste.

Across Europe, the parish church has stood for centuries at the centre of local communities; it was the focal point of its religious life, the rituals performed there marked the stages of life from the cradle to the grave. Nonetheless the church itself artistically and architecturally stood apart from the parish community. It was often the largest and only stone-built building in a village; it was legally distinct being subject to canon law, as well as consecrated for the celebration of religious rites. The buildings associated with the ‘cure of souls’ were sacred sites or holy places, where humanity interacted with the divine.

In spite of the importance of the parish church, these buildings have generally not received the same attention from historians as non-parochial places of worship. This collection of essays redresses this balance and reflects on the parish church across a number of confessions – Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Anti-Trinitarian – during the early modern period. Rather than providing a series of case studies of individual buildings, each essay looks at the evolution of parish churches in response to religious reform as well as confessional change and upheaval. They examine aspects of their design and construction; furnishings and material culture; liturgy and the use of the parish church. While these essays range widely across Europe, the volume also considers how religious provision and the parish church were translated into a global context with colonial and commercial expansion in the Americas and Asia. This interdisciplinary volume seeks to identify what was distinctive about the parish church for the congregations that gathered in them for worship and for communities across the early modern world.

La cultura del libro en la América Española siempre ha cobrado fascinación para muchas personas. Curiosidad alimentada por la idea de un Tribunal del Santo Oficio que persiguió y prohibió prácticamente todo acceso al conocimiento para los residentes de estos territorios sujetos a la normativa de la Corona Española. Sin embargo, hace décadas que el estudio de nueva documentación transformó radicalmente las valoraciones previas. En este contexto, las bibliotecas de los particulares quedaron fuera del interés pese a que estas colecciones también formaron parte de las bibliotecas institucionales que se fundaron en conventos, colegios, seminarios, noviciados y otras entidades de la época. Las bibliotecas privadas han sido estudiadas en su mayoría, mediante los inventarios post mortem. Sin embargo, la investigación que aquí se presenta analiza otras evidencias históricas que demuestran una compleja cultura del libro en Nueva España. Este texto explica los procedimientos inquisitoriales que se realizaron para revisar las bibliotecas de personas que habían fallecido, cómo se reglamentó esa tramitación, que intereses perseguía, y los documentos que generaron dichos procesos. Pretendemos así contribuir a comprender mejor la cultura de un pasado que también delineó características culturales de esta parte de América.

Quando se fala em conquista da América se pensa nos massacres promovidos pelos invasores. Seriam mesmo os espanhóis vitoriosos? No século XVI, os tesouros americanos estavam sob o comando dos "vencedores", mas o novo território pertencia ao rei e não se tornou propriedade dos conquistadores. Com a prata, a Coroa expandiu a burocracia, presenteou os aliados e armou tropas para aniquilar seus opositores no Novo Mundo.
A era das conquistas trata da formação do maior império colonial na América, o espanhol. Entre os ameríndios, uns resistiram e outros participaram das invasões, mas aos poucos foram submetidos. Embora lutassem pelo rei, os espanhóis ficaram descontentes com seus ganhos e se rebelaram contra a Coroa. Suas vitórias não foram duradouras, logo se enquadraram ou foram aniquilados pelas tropas do rei. Quem se sagraria vitorioso desta epopeia? Este livro reúne argumentos e fatos capazes de modificar a visão simplista e parcial sobre a conquista da América.


Na orelha do seu livro, o senhor fala de “visão simplista e parcial sobre a conquista da América”.  A que o senhor se refere e a que atribui esse simplismo analítico?
Considero uma análise simplista aquela que pretende explicar o passado a partir de uma única perspectiva. Por muito tempo, a conquista da América resumia-se aos ataques militares contra os índios indefesos e à hecatombe provocada pelas epidemias. Pretendia-se não somente culpar os espanhóis pelo massacre indígena, mas também demonstrar que os índios eram “raça inferior”,  incapazes de reação. Em seguida, influenciados pelos marxistas, os historiadores pretenderam comprovar que os índios resistiram aos espanhóis e, aos poucos, deixaram de ser vítimas e receberam contornos de heróis. De fato, fossem vítimas ou heróis da resistência, os índios tiveram participação na conquista, lutaram contra as milícias espanholas, mas também colaboraram com os invasores para massacrar as populações locais. Sem os índios, os espanhóis teriam muitas dificuldades para conquistar a América. Em pesquisas recentes, descobriu-se que os espanhóis empregaram soldados negros em embates, sobretudo no assalto a Tenochtitlan (posteriormente Cidade do México). Enfim, hoje os historiadores entendem que as rivalidades entre as comunidades americanas favoreceram os espanhóis. Eles incentivaram os indígenas a aniquilar seus rivais, mas, em outras ocasiões, os espanhóis foram usados pelos índios para submeter seus oponentes. Aliás, dependendo do espaço, ao invés de  conquista seria melhor empregar conquistas, pois algumas populações resistiram ou ficaram esquecidas por séculos. Assim, não se pode conceber a conquista como o duelo entre o bem e o mal, entre índios e espanhóis, tampouco que os combates fiquem restritos às primeiras décadas do século XVI, mas concluir que foi processo de longa duração e que os conquistadores não eram somente os espanhóis. Em vários episódios, os índios e os negros também se sagraram vitoriosos.
Como o senhor avalia os estudos mais recentes sobre os impérios numa perspectiva comparada?
A perspectiva comparada é um método muito eficaz contra os historiadores nacionalistas e regionalistas que pretendem sacralizar personagens e singularizar eventos da sua história. Com alguma defasagem temporal, existem elementos que se repetem na história da América Latina. Neste grande território, as estruturais sociais, as formas de dominação e os vínculos com a metrópole guardam muitas semelhanças. Assim, conhecer o que se passou no Peru ou no México pode lançar luzes sobre o passado colonial do Brasil. Essas regiões estavam conectadas, pois dividiam a mesma cultura política e religiosa. Por isso defendo que o diálogo com os historiadores da América hispânica é fundamental para aperfeiçoar a nossa própria pesquisa histórica e nossas conclusões sobre o passado colonial.
Qual o impacto da colonização espanhola na América?
Seria muito maniqueísta afirmar que os espanhóis criaram um potente sistema de exploração do povos indígenas. De fato eles recorreram às tradições locais, às formas de dominação que já existiam antes da conquista. Não inventaram a mita, os espanhóis aperfeiçoaram e perpetuaram os mecanismos incas que obrigaram os índios a trabalhar. Nas ilhas do Caribe, onde as populações foram dizimadas pelas epidemias e pelo excesso de trabalho, os espanhóis e os crioulos (mestiços ou brancos nascidos na América) introduziram o trabalho escravo africano. O mesmo procedimento ocorreu em regiões tropicais, onde não havia braços para cultivar a cana-de-açúcar e o tabaco. Os africanos alteraram bastante o perfil populacional da América. O vazio populacional e a expansão agrícola para exportação incentivaram a difusão da abominável escravidão.  Ao meu ver, o grande impacto da colonização da América foi a introdução do escravismo, as demais formas de exploração do trabalho existiam antes da invasão espanhola.

Introducción Producto de una comercialización del ocio, el teatro novohispano de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII se dividió en dos grandes corrientes. La primera y más notable, por ser la patrocinado y deseada por las autoridades civiles fue la que correspondía al teatro de corte ilustrado que estaba bajo el dominio de cierta censura, lo que implicaba además que era compuesto bajo las directrices de la preceptiva dramática neoclásica. Este tipo de teatro correspondía a tragedias, comedias o algún otro género de grandes dimensiones como óperas e incluso zarzuelas. Su ejecución se daba estrictamente dentro de los coliseos públicos como el Nuevo Coliseo de la Ciudad de México, que fue el más importante de la época. La segunda corriente es la del teatro de raigambre popular, representado por géneros menores y líricos como sainetes, tonadillas escénicas, bailes, follas, bailes teatrales y entremeses. Teatro de este tipo era presentado en los entreactos de las piezas mayores del coliseo; no obstante también se presentó en las calles y en casas particulares gracias a compañías de cómicos itinerantes. Dentro de esta última corriente debe añadirse al teatro de marionetas, pues durante la época tuvo un papel preponderante como vehículo de entretenimiento no sólo en las comunidades más alejadas, sino durante los tiempos en que, debido a órdenes civiles o religiosas, las representaciones en los teatros públicos cesaban. Es obligado, además, añadir una tercera corriente de naturaleza estrictamente escénica que podemos designar como circense. A ella se adhieren espectáculos como destrezas físicas, escamoteo, ilusionismo, animales amaestrados y títeres. 1 1 Es necesario señalar que había una sutil diferencia entre los títeres y las marionetas o muñecos para usar la palabra de la época, que consiste en el tipo de circunstancia en la que se veían implicadas estas figuras. Los títeres solían tener una función ilustrativa más que dramática, es decir, solían ser representaciones gráficas del contenido narrativo de alguna canción o historia pronunciada por un animador. Estos títeres eran generalmente de muñecos de guante o bien figurillas movidas por varillas u otros mecanismos. En cambio los muñecos eran figuras articuladas que se utilizaban para representar piezas dramáticas más complejas, como comedias, tragedias e incluso óperas.

This thesis aims to analyze the peculiarities involved in the organization of the trip, the installation and the beginning of the missions of the Jesuits in Mexico since 1572. Given the dedication of Jesuit towards education and urban activities during the first three decades after their arrival, this study examines the rationale that guided the teaching projects in their colegios in the capital of the viceroyalty. We start with the premise that those religious shared a certain notion of “good government” that supported their educational and missionary practices. Drawing on this principle, we propose here a reflection on the participation and influence of the Jesuits in Mexican society in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through their urban activities, as lawyers, and collegians, as teachers and forgers of literate groups.

Esta tese pretende analisar as particularidades que envolveram a organização da viagem, a instalação e o início das missões da Companhia de Jesus no México a partir de 1572. Tendo em vista a dedicação dos jesuítas à educação e às atividades urbanas durante as três primeiras décadas após a sua chegada, o presente estudo examina os fundamentos que nortearam os projetos de ensino nos colégios da Ordem na capital do vice-reino. Parte-se da premissa que aqueles religiosos compartilhavam certa noção de “bom governo” que embasava suas práticas educativas e missionárias. Valendo-se de tal princípio, propõe-se aqui uma reflexão a respeito da participação e influxo dos jesuítas na sociedade mexicana dos séculos XVI e XVII por meio de suas atividades citadinas, como jurisconsultos, e colegiais, como professores e formadores de grupos letrados.

The Catedral of Mexico, like most of the cathedrals of the Hispanic world, was an important center of musical learning during the past. The creation of a teaching institution inside the cathedral to train musically young people was another of the elements which were taken of the Spanish cathedral organisation and were exported to the New World since the sixteenth century. This article presents a synthesis of the Mexico City Cathedral musical teaching during the Viceregnal period. It will be analysed the cathedral rules which regulated the musical teaching and other documentary evidence of the cathedral archive.
La Catedral de México, como la mayoría de las catedrales del mundo hispano, fue un centro importante de enseñanza musical durante el pasado. La creación de una institución docente en el seno de la catedral para educar musicalmente a los jóvenes fue otro más de los elementos que se tomaron de la organización catedralicia española y se exportaron al Nuevo Mundo a partir del siglo XVI. Este trabajo presenta una síntesis de la organización de la enseñanza musical en la Catedral de México durante el período virreinal. Para ello se analizará la normativa catedralicia que la regulaba y otra documentación procedente del archivo catedralicio.
