Japan can't “protect the US” militarily because the US conquered Japan and imposed a constitution which forbade it. This really just shows American security guarantees are worthless now, no matter how much personal diplomacy you do.
With Japan we have a deal, which is a very interesting. We have to protect Japan, but they don't have to protect us. And btw they make a fortune with us economically.
