Scoring Notes (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is published by NYC Music Services. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit scoringnotes.com, how we use it, and the choices you have. We’ve tried to write it in plain language. If anything is unclear, please get in touch.

Information we collect

Information you give us. You can read Scoring Notes without telling us who you are. We collect personal information only when you choose to provide it, such as when you:

  • leave a comment (your name, email address, website if provided, and the comment itself);
  • subscribe to receive new posts by email or sign up for our monthly newsletter (your email address);
  • send us a message through our contact form (your name, email address, and message).

Information collected automatically. Like most websites, when you visit we automatically receive standard technical information, including your IP address, approximate geographic location, browser and device type, referring website, the pages you view, and the dates and times of your visits. This information helps us understand how the site is used and keep it secure.

Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small file stored by your browser. We and our service providers use cookies and similar technologies to operate the site, remember your preferences, measure traffic, and support advertising. These include:

  • Essential cookies that make the site work (for example, remembering your details when you leave a comment).
  • Analytics cookies from Google Analytics and Jetpack (see “Analytics” below).
  • Advertising and measurement cookies, including the Meta (Facebook) pixel, which help us understand the reach of our content and advertising.

Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies through their settings. Doing so may affect how parts of this and other websites work. You can also opt out of many advertising cookies at optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • publish and manage the comments you submit;
  • send you the post notifications and newsletters you’ve asked for;
  • respond to your messages and inquiries;
  • operate, maintain, secure, and improve the website;
  • measure and understand our audience in aggregate; and
  • comply with our legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising in exchange for money.

Comments and avatars

When you leave a comment, your name and comment are published on the site; your email address is not published. Comments may be checked against the Akismet anti-spam service (operated by Automattic) to help us filter spam. If you use an email address associated with Gravatar, your public profile picture may be displayed alongside your comment. You can ask us to remove or anonymize a comment you’ve left at any time.

Email subscriptions and newsletter

Post notifications are delivered through the subscription service provided by Jetpack/WordPress.com (Automattic), and our monthly newsletter is delivered through Mailchimp. We use your email address only to send the messages you’ve signed up for. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time. We will never pass your email address on to any unrelated third party.

Contact form and spam protection

Our contact form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA to reduce spam and abuse. Your use of reCAPTCHA is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Advertising and affiliate relationships

Scoring Notes carries advertising to help cover the cost of running the site. Advertising partners and networks may use cookies or similar technologies to measure and serve ads. We also participate in affiliate programs, which means we may earn a commission — at no additional cost to you — when you buy something through a link on our site. These include, but are not limited to, the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, and from time to time the Apple, Microsoft, Backblaze, Dropbox, and other affiliate and advertising programs. As an Amazon Associate, Scoring Notes earns from qualifying purchases.

Embedded content from other sites

Our articles and podcast episodes sometimes include embedded content (for example, YouTube videos, audio players, or social media posts). Embedded content from other websites behaves as if you had visited that website directly, and those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode where possible.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics and Jetpack Stats to understand how visitors use the site — which posts are popular, how people arrive, and so on. This information is used in aggregate and helps us decide what to cover. You can read Google’s practices in the Google Privacy Policy and opt out using Google’s browser add-on.

How we share information

We share personal information only as needed to run the site and as described in this policy — for example, with the service providers noted above (hosting, email delivery, analytics, anti-spam, and advertising partners) who process it on our behalf. We may also disclose information if required to do so by law, or to establish, exercise, or defend our legal rights. Except as described here, we do not provide your personal information to third parties.

Data retention

We keep comments and their metadata indefinitely so that follow-up comments read in context. For subscribers, we keep your email address until you unsubscribe. Contact-form messages are retained as long as needed to handle your inquiry and for our records. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see “Your rights”).

International data transfers

Scoring Notes is operated from the United States, and the service providers we use may store and process information in the United States and other countries. If you are visiting from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, and processed in, countries whose data protection laws differ from those in your own country.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to opt out of marketing. Because we do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, there is nothing to opt out of in that respect, but you are welcome to confirm this with us. To make any request, just contact us. We will respond consistent with applicable law, and we won’t charge you for reasonable requests.

Children’s privacy

Scoring Notes is intended for a general, professional audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access. However, no method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Links to other websites

Our site contains links to other websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites, and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes may be noted more prominently. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
