Voices Review by Ted Mills

Roger Eno's first album continues in the vein of the songs he wrote for Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Using piano and broad washes of synths, some treated by older brother Brian Eno, the younger Eno's pieces are slow, contemplative works of minimalism, similar to Erik Satie's "Gymnopedies." Yet the composer he is most similar to on Voices is labelmate Harold Budd, who also paints from the same palette. Daniel Lanois's production simply balances these elements and gives them depth, adding violin to the final track almost as a taste for Eno's next album.

It may seem odd to discover the 1986 American erotic film 9½ Weeks starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger features two tracks ("Voices" and "A Paler Sky") from Roger Eno's Voices record. Considering the nature of the film, I think it makes sense since ambient music is seductive and often provides filmmakers with just the right mood and tone for a scene. Voices consists of eleven beautiful, delicate, meditative piano pieces by Roger Eno that are similar in style to some ambient music pioneers that came before him. These selections are also reminiscent of tracks from Music for Films III, particularly Eno's own compositions, "Fleeting Smile" and "Quixote." Highly recommended.

A timeless collection of Melancholy pieces from the mid 80's. A masterpiece of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanios production. This was one of many collaborations with this unique sound of atmospheres and melodies (The Pearl, Apollo, Harold Budd White Arcades ) Made a name for the brother of Brian - Roger Eno. I wore this record out in the 80's. This sound was made for the emerging CD market, with subtle overtones and deep atmospheres.
