It’s actually a reference to the W.B. Yeats poem “The Stolen Child” that was quoted at the beginning of a collected Canadian edition of the Chronicles. The quote itself runs thus:
Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand For the world’s more full of weeping Than you can understand.
With the idea of escapism, both literal and figurative, being pervasive throughout all of the Chronicles, it’s a perfect summation of the books themselves. The name was selected to reflect that spirit of otherworldliness and the fantastic that serves to draw new readers to O.R. Melling’s works, and to keep the older ones coming back. (And because lithiumlaughter is horribly uncreative when it comes to naming things. But that’s not as good a story.)
Alright. That’s cool. So...what goes on here then?
Put simply? It’s a fan community. We like fannish things. Fic is welcome. Fanart is welcome. Icons are welcome. Fanmixes are also welcome. Discussion of any aspect of the books (ships, plot, characters, whatever) is welcome. Anything and everything to do with the Chronicles of Faerie is welcomed with open arms…and occasionally grabby hands. We’re kinda desperate.
What’s the catch? There’s gotta be a catch.
Curses. You caught us. We do play by a few rules here at “Come Away”: 1. Play nice. We’re all fans together here. Friendly discussion in which opinions differ is perfectly fine, but disrespect will NOT be tolerated. Should it occur, those involved will be dealt with. 2. Use cuts. No-one likes their flists getting clogged with long blocks of text or big images. If you’ve got fic, fan essays, or pictures, keeping them behind the cut keeps the community clean-looking. 3. An informed member is a happy member. If something you’re posting is questionable with regards to content, cut it and say that it’s sketchy. If in doubt, for the love of chicken noodle soup, cut it and say that it’s sketchy. It’s better to be safe than sorry. There are those who don’t want to see or read that sort of thing, and there are those who don’t mind. Let’s cater to both sides, m’kay? 4. Common sense is a wonderful thing. Use it abundantly. If any issue should arise, pause and think for a second. Does your planned response make you look like an asshat? Will it hurt another member? Is it just generally stupid? Then don’t do it. Clear enough? Good.
That all makes sense...but why the crap have you tagged this community Adult Concepts?
Ahhhh. A good question that deserves a good answer. The books themselves have nothing in them to warrant such a rating, certainly. However, fanworks are a different story. They can jump all over the map with regards to content, and neither lithiumlaughter or thewriter16 have any idea of what to expect from this comm, since it's still a baby. In short, this tag is just a precautionary measure to cover your lovely mods' butts. It will change as necessary.
Anything else?
Nope. That’s pretty much it. If you’ve got questions, concerns, or coconuts, please feel free to contact lithiumlaughter or thewriter16. They’ll be happy to address anything that might be weighing on your mind.
Now, if you’ve not been scared off, hi there. Pop on in and leave an introductory post so we can get to know each other better. (And you know, if it’s got a little more to it than just “Hi! I’m so-and-so! I like the Chronicles of Faerie!”, that’d be super too.)
Cheers, and all the best to you. -Your friendly neighborhood mods
