We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Completion

Major construction is well underway on the Cranbourne Line Upgrade, with 8km of duplicated track between Cranbourne and Dandenong complete and a new Merinda Park Station open to passengers.

The second track between Cranbourne and Dandenong was completed in February 2022, close to a year ahead of schedule.

The second track will mean trains can run every 10 minutes on average in the morning peak for passengers travelling from Cranbourne, Lynbrook and Merinda Park stations.

In addition to the train line duplication, we’ve built brand-new Merinda Park Station in Lyndhurst that is designed to accommodate the duplicated track.

The new station has 2 new platforms, more shelter and a better layout. The station opened in February 2022, well ahead of the original 2023 completion date.

Works to duplicate 2 rail bridges at Abbotts Road and Eumemmerring Creek are also now complete.

We're removing the last 2 remaining level crossings between Cranbourne and the city, which will see the Cranbourne line completely level crossing free by 2025.

Two level crossing removals are now complete:

This project will also deliver a new rail connection for the Port Rail Shuttle Network, allowing freight to be transported by train from Dandenong South through to the Port of Melbourne.

Major works have also begun to untangle the tracks at the junction where the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines merge in Dandenong.

Once complete in 2022, the new parallel tracks will increase reliability, making it easier for trains to run to the timetable.

Along with the Metro Tunnel, the Cranbourne Line Upgrade will make road and rail travel easier, faster and more reliable for Melbourne’s south east, providing better access to jobs, health and education for people in this growth area of Melbourne.
