Pilgrims to India
Broadening the information a bit, I just found the following paragraph on Buddhist pilgrims from China in Empires of the Word: A language history of the World, N Ostler, Harper Collins, 2005. Once Buddhism had reached China (in the first century AD, through Indian initiative) and begun to establish itself, Chinese monks starting with Fa-Xian in the late fourth century were drawn to make the journey from China themselves, sometimes in stealthy disregard of the law. The most famous of them, Xuan-Zang, had to depart illegally and furtively in 627, but was able to return to an official welcome from the emperor Tai Zong in 644. It became fashionable to fund large-scale centres for translation of Buddhist literature. There was also a series of expeditions by Chinese monks to study and gather literature in India - fifty six are known before the tenth century, of whom thirty four traveled by sea from Guang-zhou (Canton) and twenty two overland past the Taklamakan desert and the Hindu Kush. For this information, Ostler references Chinese History: a Manual Revised and Enlarged, E Wilkinson, Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Asia Center, 2000. My copy of Monkey (Waley translation published by Penguin classics) says that Hsüan Tsang (Tripitaka) lived in the 7th century and the legends had grown up by the tenth century, possibly earlier, just to put all that in context. | | Monday, June 6th, 2005 | 6:08 pm [watashi_no_desu]

I am of newness!
I'm new here.. and wow isn't it dead here! anyway.. I've been into Monkey for ages, it's funny how corny it can get and how they had sp effects for the sheer sake of having them. Anyone ever done any fanfiction based on this fandom? Current Mood: amused | | Saturday, November 6th, 2004 | 4:41 am [davidm]

*hyperventilates* They've released the 13 unseen episodes in Australia! Basically they've just extended the dvds out four more. (I was browsing today and saw a cover I didn't recognise, and a few 'wtf's later and I realised what it was). neatooo! (sadly, they're all still $27AUD, and while I want to rush out and buy all four, it's hard to justify when dvd's #1-#13 go for like, $10AUD these days.) | | Monday, July 26th, 2004 | 10:19 pm [davidm]

Bleep bleep. Anyone around here still? Check out Love Hina Ep. 16. In the japanese version there's a round about ref to -our- monkey, well, tripitaka. "Yeah, for people of my generation it's just not right if Sanzo isn't a woman..." "I like that you're more Sante Fe than Hanako Kiryuuin'' According to google/imdb Kiryuuin Hanako no Shougai is a japanese movie with Masako Natsume (Tripitaka), she doesn't play Hanako Kiryuin but Matsue Kiryuin, but from what I could find on the movie "Actress Masako Natsume passed away too early at age 27, and here's her signature work." somewhat explains that. Anyway, this episode isn't just about that ref, the whole episode is about a production of 'Journey to the West'' which Monkey is based off, so it's quite good. (The english dub doesn't include that ref either unfortunately, and the voices are mildly irritating, so do yourself a favour and watch the jap/sub. ;) ) | | Sunday, April 11th, 2004 | 7:48 pm [queenirrelevant]

He knew every magic trick under the sun
Hey everyone! I'm new to this group. I've loved Monkey Magic since as long as I can remember. I think I was around 4 or 5 years old when I started watching! It's so cool that there is a Monkey community. :) Current Mood: good | | Thursday, March 6th, 2003 | 12:50 pm [greenknight]

So, first Pigsy (Toshiyuki Nishida), or second Pigsy (Tonpei Hidari)? Which did people like the most? | | Monday, February 24th, 2003 | 2:05 pm [greenknight]

Hello hello, I just joined up, I hope nobody minds? I'm a huge monkey fan, I grew up watching it from about age 6, read the book, have the DVDs, tried the Ice cream - Oooo hairy. I'm just glad I found this group, it's nice to know that I'm not alone in this obsession :) | | Monday, April 22nd, 2002 | 11:48 pm [davidm]
