exploring art: one gallery, one artist, one country at a time!
“There are things that are not sayable, that is why we have art”
About us
A chance encounter with an artist’s work I had never heard of and a challenge involving one I had, has taken me on a journey that I had forgotten can be so enjoyable while challenging that part of us that responds to the visual image.
What is apparent is how everything is connected and, since 2013, I’ve travelled the UK, USA and Europe visiting museums and art galleries to explore one connection after another, following recommendations and taking chances on seeing something I may not like.
For my user name, I used The Rock Drill, Jacob Epstein’s 1913 sculpture whose menacing appearance hides its melancholy soul, and whose deconstruction brought this aspect to the fore. Leonora Carrington’s quotation, at the top of the page, resonates so much with me and her words followed me on the start of this journey.
In the 10+ years that I have been travelling and writing, my world expanded in ways I never imagined. One of my favourite pieces is Louise Nevelson’s Sky Cathedral, a work that is so powerful and which echoes a quote by her that summarises what I have learnt: “No matter how individual we humans are, we are a composite of everything we are aware of. We are a mirror of our times” I hope that in visiting my blog, you too can take something away that feeds into your artistic soul. The Rock Drill
