2:57AM - Halloween is a good time to resurrect dead communities...

I'm attempting to bring this community out of retirement to sing the praises of House of Leaves. It is by Mark Z. Danielewski and is probably the best book I have ever read. I strongly urge all of you to find a copy and throw yourself headlong into it. Once you do, come back here and discuss it with me. If you've already read it you can start now. :D Also I will be picking up Only Revolutions (Danielewski's latest novel) after I finish Player Piano and Keep the Aspidistra Flying.

11:08PM - The Man In The High Castle

So has anyone read Philip K. Dick's, The Man In the High Castle? If so could you please explain what the ending meant? I'm no stranger to Dick's work, and I was really looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately, I felt the entire story dragged, and just when I thought I was going to get some kind of profound understanding of it I was left scratching my head. Oh well if someone could help clarify that would be great. ...Next book Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammet.

10:39PM - The Amulet of Samarkand

Hey has anyone read the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud? If you have would you recommend it to someone that enjoyed the Harry Potter series, and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell? I need a new fantasy series since I'm going through Harry Potter withdrawal right now. Thanks.

Has anyone read anything by J.G. Ballard? I just finished Crash, which was a pretty wild book. I'm not sure what I thought of it, but Concrete Island sounds interesting. Any recommendations?

9:57AM - boc... outside the pages... and so on

so. i would have to guess myself as being the most super ambitious
one (and the one who started first) but i am almost finished with breakfast of champions
already, and plan to open up the first conversation on it. the book, in my opinion, has been
far from conventional, so in spirit of the book, this conversation will not relate directly
to the fiction inside of the book, but instead to the chaos that happens outside of the book
instead (i.e. life). as responses, let us post things that have happened that seemed
important while reading the book. feel free to participate or not, as you
please, but i have never done a "book club" sort of thing before so i thought it might be a
fun idea.

3:20AM - group book read idea?

i just picked up kurt vonnegut's breakfast of champions and wondered (since no other suggestions were made) if anyone would be interested in reading it for april. still, open to suggestions and critiques (i have never read anything of his but have always heard of him refered to of a master of his own invented genre), but here is one vote for an april title.

6:10PM

I have a confession to make.

I should be reading textbooks, or at least something edifying or at the VERY LEAST well-written. Instead, I am reading the Anita Blake vampire hunter books by Laurell K. Hamilton and I can't stop. They are so bad and I am enjoying them thoroughly.

I did, however, want to post and say I'm glad we have some new members. People have been pretty quiet and OH, Dan, I was thinking: What if we did a book club type thing and tried to read a book every month or so and then talk about it? Would that be dumb? It would at least stir things up a bit. What does everyone think about that?

Current mood: BERJAYA it's finally spring!

9:42PM - new and improved

hello. i am new to this community and this is my first post here after a minimal amount of lurking.

i am currently finishing The Transmigration of
Timothy Archer (Phillip K Dick) and have been rather awe strucken by
the series over the last few weeks (the series consisting of Valis, The
Devine Invasion, and The Transmigration) and wanted to know what anyone
else who may have read it thought. it brings up some interesting ideas
on gnostism, reality, the torah, god ect... i would not consider myself
a "religious fiction" fan but am such a fan of Dick's tone and voice
and view that i really think he makes a series about the sixth coming
(or six thousanth) of christ an fantastic abyss of wonder.

i also just recently finished The
Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide To The Gallaxy and found it to be a blast. I
read a lot and this seems like a fun place to talk about views from
various literary ideas. i look forward to such discussions.

4:20PM

Hi, I'm new. I'm currently on an old school sci-fi kick. Which means Robert Heinlein, Lester Del Rey and others. Mostly Heinlein, I love his stuff. I just finished "Time Enough for Love," "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls," "Farnham's Freehold," "Red Planet," and others. I think when I'm done with his stuff I'll start on some Asimov. Yeah, that sounds good. ^_^

Does anyone else here read so much that when you finish all your books and the library is closed you feel empty and don't know what to do with yourself?

3:24PM - Jim Munroe

Has anyone read any novels by Jim Munroe? Someone recommended me one of his books which I really didn't like, but I would like to give some of his other novels I chance? The book I read was Flyboy Action Figures Comes With Gasmask.

I'm new and just wanted to say hello. I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451, than I'll have to try Brave New World. Also if anyone has some recommendations on some Philip K. Dick novels I'd appreciate it. I've read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Scanner Darkly. Thanks bye.

11:15AM - New & hi

Hello, my name is Ragna, and I love reading. I recently finished Fahrenheit 451 and am going to start Brave New World soon. My favorite books are Slaughterhouse Five, 1984, and The Phantom Tollbooth.

I was wondering if anyone else thought Brave New World was a read decent enough for my unnaturally high I.Q, thanks.

8:03PM - ...I'm new...

My name is Tina and I'm new to the community.

I just finished reading "Shampoo Planet" by Douglas Coupland. I liked it, but not as much as "Life After God".

I tried to start Thomas Pynchon's "Vineland" last night, but I couldn't get into it, so now I am reading "Anthem" by Ayn Rand.

5:11PM - since i was born i started to decay.

Sometimes when I'm done reading a book, or in the middle of it, I feel so lame and useless and I hate my life. Those are usually my favorite books, though. Because the book was so beautiful that I almost for a moment thought it was real. Does that make sense? I don't know, Francesca Lia Block is like that for me. What author is like that for you?

In other news, I want Weetzie Bat to be my mother.

7:48PM

I finally read Brave New World the other week, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm keeping an eye out for other books by Aldous Huxley. I'm interested in reading The Doors of Perception and such.

I have to say, out of all other dystopia novels I've read so far, I'd rather live in Brave New World's society than any other.

I have this compulsive disorder lately where I spend all the money I receive on whatever books I can find. I just bought (among many others) The Plague by Albert Camus. I read The Stranger by the same author a few months ago, and I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it for anyone who believes that nothing really matters.

Other books I've read recently and recommend for people who like to read essays: How to be Alone by Jonathan Franzen and Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman.

9:41PM - i want to but i, want to but i, want to but i...

Hey. I'm reading The Princess Bride and I haven't seen the movie. I don't really have any desire to, but anyhow. Has anyone else read the book?
