So cute! I was surfing ebay the other day and came across an article on Bob Marcucci. There was this bit on him meeting Fabian for the first time...
"The kid was handsome, he had a great warmth and depth. I asked him if he could sing and he said, 'Don't be a goof.' "
Later Bob called on the Fortes, found Fabian in gootball togs, and said, "Come on over to my office." He could hear Fabian call out to his mother in the kitchen, "Mom, a crazy man here wants to hear me sing." "All right," said Mom, "go with the crazy man and sing."

aradia13's post the other day about Fabian's fabulous pompadour made me start thinking about one of my favorite things -- boys with pompadours! I truly feel that the pompadour is the greatest men's hairstyle ever, so without further ado, here are some of my favorite pompadour pix from my personal collection.

Not *only* is this a bit of a GIP (shiny new Frankie icon) but I also made a pretty new banner that I thought I'd share (mainly 'cause I accidentally deleted the one I was using over on CSIfiles but also just 'cause they're hotties...*g*)

I'm currently capping away with the Beach movies as well if anyone's interesting in screen caps.

For those interested - I did screen caps of a couple of Fabian's movies.
Fireball 500 w/ Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon
and Thunder Alley (which I *heart*) also with Annette.

Hey all - I just joined up and thought I'd say hi. :) I just saw The Golden Boys in concert a few weeks ago and had such a great time. And while I went mainly to see Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon, I left the show being a total fan of Fabian's. Knocked my socks off. And Frankie was walking around singing Venus and he stopped right in front of me to sing. It was tempting to be like a lot of the women there and go up and hug him but...turns out I couldn't breathe let alone move so there goes that. ;-)
So, after my little fangirl moment I have decided now that I have to see all of Fabian's movies. Recommendations on where to start? (I'm just going to have to make myself some icons too...)

| Dances! |
[21 Apr 2006|12:18pm] |
|
With the unbelievable success of American Bandstand and the Twist, dance crazes were a major part of teen-age life in the late '50s and early '60s. Many dances started on local teen dance shows, and some caught on nationally. I thought I'd feature one of the more strangely-named dances in this post -- the Roach! Anyone who's seen the great movie Hairspray probably remembers this dance! In case you ever wondered how to do the Roach yourself, here are the instructions, straight from an issue of 'Teen magazine!

Hello teensville residents! The wonderful be_bop_baby has appointed me as the new moderator of this way-out community. I look forward to getting to know all of you, and if you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to contact me.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get to the first installment of Teen Life magazine's "Who do You Love Best?" article from September of 1963. ( Big photos and text behind the cut. Enjoy!Collapse )

| Another book |
[22 Dec 2005|08:23pm] |
I don't own this book personally but it looks neat--and I know the decades it covers are a little early for this community (maybe not?)--it's called:
SOME WORE BOBBY SOX: The Emergence of Teenage Girls' Culture, 1920-1945 by Kelly Schrum
 @ Amazon.com
Images of teenage girls in poodle skirts dominated American popular culture on the 1950's. But as Kelly Schrum shows, teenage girls were swooning over pop idols and using their allowances to buy the latest fashions well beforehand. After World War I, a teenage identity arose in the US, as well as a consumer culture geared toward it. From fashion and beauty to music and movies, high school girls both consumed and influenced what manufacturers, marketers, and retailers offered to them. Examining both national trends and individual lives, Schrum looks at the relationship between the power of consumer culture and the ability of girls to selectively accept, reject, and appropriate consumer goods. Lavishly illustrated with images from advertisements, catalogs, and high school year books, Some Wore Bobby Sox is a unique and fascinating cultural history of teenage girl culture in the middle of the century.
