Description/Taste
Mint is an aromatic herb that can grow anywhere from 10 to 120 centimeters tall, depending on the variety. It spreads readily via underground horizontal roots and is characterized by its unique stem structure, as the erect stems have a square shape instead of round. Mint will sprout tiny purple, pink, or white flowers if allowed to bloom; however, it will lose some of its essential oil, making the leaves less fragrant and flavorful. Hence, Mint is typically pruned to prevent flowering, and its leaves are harvested young when they have the best flavor and texture, as leaves allowed to mature on the plant for too long will become earthy and bitter. The oval, jagged-edged, blunt-tipped leaves grow opposite along the square stems and can vary slightly in both shape and color, from dark to bright green, greyish-green to purple-blue, or even pale yellow. Some Mint leaves may be variegated, and some may have a fuzzy texture, but they all have the unmistakable minty scent when crushed. Mint offers a sweet, fresh, cooling flavor and aroma.

Mint is in the Mentha genus of the Mint family, and while there are many plants in the wider Mint family that have “mint” in their common name, only members of the Mentha genus are known as "true Mints.” Around the world, you can find about twenty-five or so species of true Mint with hundreds of varieties, as mint species freely cross among themselves. Spearmint and Peppermint are two of the most popular and widely available commercial cultivars. Spearmint is known to be more versatile for culinary use, while Peppermint is the preferred mint oil for flavoring pharmaceutical and oral health products like cough syrups, therapeutic creams, and toothpaste. It also flavors chewing gum, candies, other sweets, perfumes, soaps, cleaning products, or even tobacco and drinks. Mint has a long history of medicinal and culinary use, and to this day, it is one of the most called upon herbs for its soothing properties, used extensively in medicine, aromatherapy, beauty products, and food flavoring.
Nutritional Value
Mint is rich in vitamins A and C and also contains smaller amounts of vitamin B2 and minerals like calcium, copper, zinc, and magnesium. The main organic compound that gives Mint its distinctive smell and cooling taste sensation is menthol, most commonly associated with Peppermint, while other key compound players include pulegone and carvone, which is more prevalent in Spearmint. Mint has long been prized for the therapeutic properties of its aromatic oil, which has been reported to have antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antifungal activities. Mint has primarily been used throughout history to treat stomach and digestion problems, such as nausea, cramping, and indigestion, but has also been used for freshening breath. Inhaling steam with mint oil is said to help with respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis. In aromatherapy, mint oil can be used to ease agitation and mental fatigue, as well as relieve headaches.
Applications
Mint can be used fresh or dried in sweet and savory applications and is particularly popular in Turkish, Indian, Vietnamese, Greek, and Persian cuisines. Add fresh Mint leaves to fruit or green salads, use as a garnish, or brew into a stomach-soothing, cold-combating herbal tea. Dried Mint can be added to simmering sauces or stews, while Mint oil or extract can be used to infuse syrup for beverages and cocktails like mojitos, or to flavor whipped creams, yogurts, sorbets, ice creams, baked goods, candies, and more. Mint is also commonly used to make a sauce or jelly to accompany lamb dishes. Mint pairs well with citrus, berries, melons, peaches, plums, peas, asparagus, summer squash, beets, chocolate, aged sheep's milk cheeses, seafood, pork, lamb, and poultry. Fresh Mint is delicate and bruises easily, so carefully store sprigs in a jar with water and loosely cover with a plastic bag in the fridge. Dried Mint leaves should be kept in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Mint’s name is derived from ancient Greek mythology, which tells of how Pluto, also known as Hades, ruler of the underworld, had eyes for a lovely young river nymph named Minthe. Minthe reveled in Pluto’s attention and even bragged about how much he desired her, but those whispers eventually made their way back to Persephone, Pluto’s wife. She became enraged with jealousy over her husband’s wandering eye. Persephone confronted Minthe and transformed her into a crawling plant to live on earth, cursed to be trampled upon and crushed. Unable to undo the spell, Pluto gave Minthe a sweet aroma that intensified when she was tread on so that she would never go unnoticed and once again fill the air with her enticing presence. The name Minthe eventually evolved into the name of the herb as we know it. Mint was traditionally used in Greek and Roman funeral rites, as the herb’s sweet aroma hid other less pleasant odors, and was even used as an aromatic in mausoleums found in Egyptian tombs dating as far back as 1000 BCE. Over time, the herb earned a reputation as a symbol of hospitality in many cultures and was often used to clean and fragrance tables and floors to welcome guests.
Geography/History
Mint is native to the Mediterranean basin, though it is now widely distributed throughout the temperate areas of the world. It has been naturalized in many places, including South Africa, Australia, North America, and other regions of Europe and Asia. Mint made its way to America via early European settlers, who used it as a medicinal herb for tea and as an aromatic for the body and home. Commercial production of Mint is believed to have made its way to the United States by the early 1800s, and by the mid-1850s, America’s mint industry was centered in Wayne County, New York. The production and popularity of Mint oil spread, and today, California, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Idaho, and Indiana are the top Peppermint producers, while Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Indiana produce the most Spearmint. All in all, the United States produces more than half of the world’s supply of these two favorite Mint varieties. Due to Mint’s tendency to aggressively spread unchecked, it can become a pest in some gardens and is even considered invasive in some environments. If you don’t want to risk a Mint mutiny in your yard, you can plant Mint in an individual pot or buried container in a garden bed or grow it indoors in a container on a sunny windowsill. Common Mint varieties are readily available at grocery stores and farmers markets.
