Where: Various
What: Quest prompts, with room to grow should other things come up during the month!

i. digging through the rubble
[The heat and humidity this month have made Balthusā go-to of taking on tasks that involve physical labor a little more trying than usual, but at least this one is mostly indoors— sort of. Given the state of the warehouse, heās not sure it really counts as indoors, but thereās enough of it left to shield those digging through the remains and trying to clean things up from the rain thatās broken through. Fortunately, the rain has helped to break some of the humidity, as well, making this task a little less unpleasant than it might have been otherwise.
Of course, who is he to complain? Heās been living in a sewer for years.
He wipes some sweat from his brow as he draws up to his full height, having just rummaged through what had turned out to be nothing more than a pile of bricks.]
Nothing worth salvaging from this one, either— just rubble to clean up. Be nice if we could ādreamā this stuff away.
[Unfortunately, it doesnāt work like that. At least there might be some things worth keeping among all the debris.]
Did find a pretty sweet watch earlier! How about you?
ii. capybaras
[Rumors of new wildlife were enough to get his interest in their own right, and with the heat the way itās been, a trip to the lake out in the Wildlands seems like a great way to spend the afternoon, especially with the skies as clear as they are. What Balthus finds upon arriving, however— well the rumors definitely hadnāt done these little guys justice.
Paying no mind to anyone else who might have had the same idea and may be milling about, he approaches a capybara that appears to be drifting in and out of dozing in the shade not far from the shore, bending down on one knee as he holds a hand out towards it tentatively.]
Hey there, little fella⦠or miss?
[Itās hard to tell. Regardless, the capybara responds by yawning, which earns a grin from him in reply.]
Youāre pretty cute, huh? Whereād you guys even come from?
iii. wishing on a starfish
[The starfish that need collecting are so small that theyāre easy to accidentally overlook, but with some effort, Balthus thinks heās gotten reasonably good at spotting them— which is why he can be found laying on his stomach on the ground just outside the residential area with a jar of saltwater in one hand, the bottom of it already filled with what looks like tiny star-shaped rocks.]
Come on⦠it would be real helpful if you guys could call out or somethingā¦
[Of course they canāt, but the reminder that these are living things makes him unhappy about the idea of leaving too many of them behind. Naturally, itās impossible to ensure that all of them are found, but if he can at least collect a jar full— well, theyāre small, so that adds up to a whole lot of tiny starfish, right?
Good thing he doesnāt mind making a fool of himself while doing it.]
Letās see, thereās gotta be— yeah, got another one! Come on, buddy, into the jar!

ii!
She dozes for a bit until Balthus' voice wakes her up, and she looks around to see who he's talking to. As it turns out, it ends up being less "who" and more "what": a giant rodent who is similarly enjoying the shade. Curious, she gets up and walks over to get a closer look at it.]
I haven't seen these kinds of giant rodents before. They must be new?
[She crouches next to Balthus and goes to pet it. The capybara yawns at her and closes its eyes to go back to dozing, causing Hilda to giggle a bit.]
It is pretty cute, huh?
no subject
[He pulls back; the capybara doesn't seem interested in investigating his hand or checking out his scent, but it doesn't seem particularly bothered by his presence, nor does it so much as flinch when Hilda joins him.]
Not what I pictured when I heard 'giant rodent,' that's for sure. After all that time in Abyss, it was hard not to imagine rats.
[The first thing that comes to mind when he thinks of any kind of Rodent of Unusual Size, honestly.]
They don't seem to mind people at all!
no subject
[Gross. Hilda knows that Balthus is used to them crawling around and stuff, but it's never sat well seeing them skitter around when she's visited him down in the Abyss.]
They don't seem to mind anything. Look at that one over there with all the ducklings asleep on it. [She points. The sight is very cute.] They've just made themselves at home like they've been here all along.
no subject
[He chuckles a little, a warm sound deep in his chest. He wouldn't have batted an eye at something like that, but he can appreciate that Hilda knows her limits. She likes what she likes and has certain sensibilities she doesn't care to have offended— nothing wrong with someone knowing themselves like that. He gives her an affectionate nudge in the ribs with one elbow before shifting to let one hand touch the ground beneath him for balance.]
Must be nice for them, don't you think? No worrying about what's going on around them, just settling right in. The ducks don't seem to mind them, either— looks like they're getting on well with the rest of the local wildlife. They're just here to sleep, I guess.
[Oh!]
Hey! Do these guys remind you of anyone?
no subject
At Balthus's question, she tilts her head thoughtfully as she watches the capybara settle in with the ducks and let out another large yawn. Suddenly, it clicks--and she starts giggling.]
They're like little furry Hapis!
[It's.... probably a compliment, considering how much Hilda likes them....?]
no subject
[He's so glad Hilda is able to see things his way, at least in situations like these. In others—
Let's just say she has plenty of advice about how he handles his finances that he really should be listening to. Thankfully, money doesn't mean much here. One less way for him to get into trouble, meaning she just has to deal with his recklessness, instead.]
I bet she'd like them, too.
[Well. Be ambivalent at best, probably.]
You think they make good pets...?
[As he muses aloud, the capybara in question opens a single eye to peer at the both of them. You talking about me?]
no subject
Of course, this particular bad idea is one she can get behind. A slow grin crosses her face.]
I bet they would be. I mean, they're pretty relaxed and seem to just eat fruit? All we'd need is a small pool of water for it to relax in...
no subject
Probably for worse. In this case, however:]
Yeah?
[He looks over at her, grinning in turn. She's on board?]
It's not like we don't have the room— and we can always make more. She can stay at my place!
no subject
Perfect!
One last, very important thing: what are we naming it?
no subject
[Great question, really! However, given who the little critter had reminded them both of...]
Might be kind of fun to make it a tribute, you know? If we call her Hapi, it'll be like having another of our friends here with us!
[Sort of.]
Plus, I think the real Hapi would get a real kick out of it.
i
[ Oriphi has been standing here, wondering if she should turn into a dinosaur to help haul things away. But dinosaurs have awfully tiny arms, and she doesn't figure it would be that much more helpful. But maybe as a bear...?
At his question, she blinks, tilting her head to one side curiously. ]
You found a watch? That is nice... I wasn't sure what sorts of things we'd find. Maybe I should try to find a watch, too?
no subject
Who knows, maybe they had a few others lying around. This place seems like it was pretty functional before, so seems like chances are high you could find something useful.
[Really, he's used to digging through rubble at this point, all things considered. It's a pretty regular activity for a lot of residents of Abyss.]
Honestly, even if it hadn't been, you would be amazed at what some people toss aside like it's junk!
no subject
Idly, she picks up a piece of⦠something, although sheās not exactly sure what it is that sheās looking at. ]
How can you tell if something is going to be usefulā¦? It would be nice to find some things to bring home, but I donāt even know what this is.
no subject
[He shoots her an easy smile as he shifts a few more broken bricks aside, then invites himself to join her, leaning down to get a good look at whatever she's found. He doesn't quite recognize it either, but that doesn't mean it's useless.]
Sometimes it's about salvaging materials. Maybe not as much of a concern here, but something like this? Back home, I'd have kept it and passed it on to our weaponsmith, see if he could use the metal. Every little bit counts in Abyss.
no subject
In any case, she hums thoughtfully as she looks down at the⦠whatever sheās holding. Just a nondescript piece of rubble. ]
Thatās very resourceful of you, Balthus. Isnāt there a blacksmith somewhere in town? Maybe we can pass any metals we find along to them, too. I was thinking about something that Thoma could use to make something just now, but I donāt think something like this would be itā¦
[ She casts him a sidelong glance, though. ]
By the way, is āAbyssā the place where you and Hilda are fromā¦?
[ She really, really hopes itās not⦠the same Abyss, or abyssal plane that she knows of. ]
no subject
Sure thing, we can load up one of these crates with what we find and I'll carry it back. I'm sure someone can use it. Better than just tossing it out, if you ask me.
[As if on cue, his own rummaging turns up another chunk of unidentified metal, though he thinks it might have been part of a chair at one point. It's enough to be salvaged, either way.
He sets it aside, stretching both of his arms out behind himself and clasping his hands there for a moment before he answers.]
As for Abyss, well— not quite. We're both from Fódlan, which is a pretty big place, and Hilda had been studying at the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach— that's a monastery. Abyss is... kind of like an underground city, hidden away beneath that monastery. That's where I live.
[His smile quirks to one side; it's not quite forced, but it's lost a little of its usual enthusiasm.]
Been there a few years now. It's kind of where the church hides their 'unmentionables.' Not bad, though. Debt collectors can't find you there even if they try!
no subject
I⦠I see⦠A hidden underground city. If you ask me, that sounds like a more interesting place than a monastery or school.
[ The smile she offers in turn is reassuring. No judgment here, Balthus. He hasnāt quite touched on the sewer-ness of it all, but he wouldnāt even be the first sewer child that Ori has ever met. ]
How is it that you came to meet Hildaās family, anyway? She mentioned that her school was full of haughty nobles, and you donāt seem like that at all.
[ Meanwhile, she turns her attention back to rummaging, depositing the something-or-other she had previously into a crate before she glances over another pile and pulls out some kind of metallic chunk of her own. Sheās no Balthus or Hilda when it comes to strength, but sheās certainly stronger than she might first appear! ]
no subject
I'm gonna take that as a compliment! We go way, way back. She's probably mentioned we're old friends, right?
[The finer details, however, have never really come up, including the part where he and Hilda didn't recognize one another right away when they met again.]
I grew up with her older brother— best bros, the two of us! I was actually born to a noble house in Leicester, just like Hilda. They've done a lot for me— treated me like a member of their own family when mine didn't really have a place for me. Always gonna be grateful to them for that.
no subject
[ Balthus, a nobleman! Ori seems to be meeting so many people who donāt seem to be noble, but are. Maybe itās because many of the nobles sheās met at home are⦠Not great, with the exception of her princely friend. But also maybe itās time to examine those internal biases⦠]
I shouldnāt be calling you āLord Balthusā or anything, am I? I donāt want to accidentally offend youā¦
[ She clears her throat. ] But— Thatās such a sweet story. Iām sorry things seemed to be difficult with your family - but sometimes the family that you find ends up becoming the family that youāve always needed, yeah?
no subject
[He shakes his head, even as he puts a hand up to stop her before she can utter that title a second time.]
I've never really liked titles, and besides, it's not mine anymore, anyway. I left my household, so my younger brother is the heir now. It's kind of complicated— pretty boring story, really— but trust me, it's better that way. These days, I'm just Balthus— the Iron-Fisted King of Grappling— and it's better that way.
[Sure, he's always broke, but thankfully, that doesn't matter much here. It would be nice if his stepmother trusted his intentions to leave his claim behind, but that's something he doesn't have to worry about here, either— really, Reverein has been a nice break for him.]
But... you're right about the Gonerils. Couldn't ask for better friends. They mean a lot to me.
[Hilda especially, these days.]
Then there's the Ashen Wolves, of course— we lived in Abyss together. That kind of situation really forces people to bond.
no subject
I respect that. It couldnāt have been easy to leave all of it behind. One of my friends from home is a prince, and he would have inherited the throne and everything - but he left all that behind, too. I canāt imagine what that must have been like for him, or for you, but Iām sure it took a lot of courage.
[ It would be weird of her to tell him that sheās proud of him, at this point in their friendship, but maybe somedayā¦
Regardless, once he brings up the Gonerils again, Ori canāt help the way that her smile widens into a grin. ]
Speaking of⦠I hear you and Hilda are together now, hm?
no subject
[A big part of it had been knowing that his stepmother would have made life hell for his father and his half-brother if he'd stayed— better that it was just him, without getting them involved more than they already would. His brother would be a better head of house than he ever would have made, anyway, or so he likes to tell himself. The kid's good-natured— he'll be a great leader.
Ori, however, has other topics in mind, and he looks momentarily startled before he gives an easy laugh, smiling broadly and reaching to rub at the back of his neck.]
You heard that, huh? Might've figured it out sooner if we'd decided to talk about things.
[As it stands, they had both been idiots.]
Uh... what did she say? Good stuff, I hope?
no subject
ā¦How cute!
At his question, though, she bites down on her lower lip a little, if only because Hilda totally shared more details than Oriphi feels she should rightfully know⦠]
Umm⦠Yeah, all good stuff, certainly!
[ Itās her turn to rub at the back of her neck, now. ]
Thereās nothing for you to worry about. The beginning of a relationship is such a special time - just enjoy your time together!
no subject
Yeah? A special time, huh...
[Well, he's definitely been enjoying himself, even if they're taking their time feeling things out.]
It's funny, I've never really been in one before. But we've known each other so long, it's... surprisingly easy?
[In the end, not a lot has changed, aside from a few obvious things.]
no subject
At his remark, she chuckles, idly lifting a finger to scratch at her cheek. ]
That's a good sign, isn't it? Being in one was pretty new to me, too, so I know how you feel. But now you can go on dates and hold hands!
[ ...Wait a minute. He's not the one who wrote that anonymous message on the journals months ago, was he? ]
no subject
[He adopts a thoughtful expression, which only looks a little out of place on him, and brings his gloved hand to rest against his chin as he closes his eyes for a moment, pondering.]
I guess the Flower Festival was our first, but thereās not always something like that going on. Iām, uh— not exactly new to spending time with women, but since those have always been limited-time engagements, we usually justā¦
[You know. Donāt make him say it.
They usually just bang.]
This has gotta be different.
no subject
But she is not, and so she's led herself to believe that it was him. ]
Hmmm...
[ She's not judging him, she swears. She's been around plenty of people who operate similarly. But this is Hilda they're talking about, and Ori wholeheartedly agrees that Hilda deserves to be treated special. ]
I have some ideas, but the sorts of dates I like to go on aren't quite the same as what Hilda would enjoy, I think...
[ Like taking a hike in the woods... ]
But I know that she likes having tea and cakes, so how about something like that? I'll even make a cake for you two, if you'd like!
no subject
[Really, he shouldn't be surprised. That does seem right up her alley.]
I'd owe you a favor, if you'd be willing! Hell, even I like tea and sweets. Kind of a favorite pastime among the students back home— guess one of those noble things I didn't manage to shake, even if the rest of me is rough around the edges.
[And who can blame him? Cakes are delicious.]
no subject
Hey, thereās no shame in liking things like sweets and deserts even if youāre a big tough guy!
[ Diluc is the same way, and Ori finds it endlessly endearing. Why should being all rough and tumbled mean you canāt enjoy cake? They really are delicious. At his acceptance of her offer, she offers a spirited little salute. ]
But leave it to me! Iāll make you guys a nice little cake, and you can take her to a nice little spot to enjoy it. Maybe the rose gardensā¦?
no subject
Hell yeah, no shame in that! Just, you know, sitting around with the dainty little cups— people probably don't expect that out of me. We know people who kind of make it their whole personality.
[Lorenz. He's talking about Lorenz.]
The rose gardens— that's perfect! You're real good at this, you know that?
no subject
But who cares about stuffy folks like that, anyway? More importantly, Ori is determined to help make this the perfect date for her friends Hilda and Balthus! ]
I guess Iām a bit of a hopeless romantic, haha⦠Oh! [ Her face brightens even more at the recollection of something. ] Balthus, you absolutely have to dress even a bit nicely for this, too. Hilda always picks out things for me to wear on special occasions and stuff. Iām sure sheād be so happy if you wore something special, too!
[ Perhaps even⦠a real shirt?! ]
no subject
[Other people had helped point him in the right direction, but he's willing to bet Ori had some encouraging conversations with Hilda somewhere along the line.]
Dress up, huh? Not like I've never done it before. You might be surprised to find out I clean up pretty nicely— and although I think I'm better without a shirt, it's probably a good idea to find a nice one for this.
[He loves taking off his clothes almost as much as he loves gambling, it's canon. :c]
want to wrap this one soon too?
And make it that much more rewarding for the shirt to come off later on?!]Well, no, I'm not surprised that you do, I'm just glad that you're open the that idea!
Oh, and you definitely have to give her flowers. You have to tell me when you're going to do this, okay, so I can remind you about all these things!
sounds good to me!
[And he knows he has a way of bumbling through things sometimes. He's a lot of things, but romantic has never been one of them— he's never needed it to be. He'd like to change that, and it's nice to have some help.]
Don't worry, you'll be the first one to know besides Hilda. I don't wanna forget any of this stuff. I'm gonna need backup.
[Save him, Ori!]
You sure it's not askin' too much?
no subject
Iām really good at being backup! You can count on me, Balthus.
[ And then she shakes her head. ]
And really, itās not too much at all! Hildaās helped me sort out a few of my own dilemmas, so I really donāt mind pitching in to make sure you two have a wonderful date! Sheās a good friend to me, and I hope I can be a good friend to you, too!
no subject
Glad to hear it.
[It's nice, having friends he can count on here— makes him miss the other members of the Abyssal Four just a little bit less. It's a novelty he doesn't think he'll get tired of anytime soon, especially given that he's already been here for the better part of a year.]
I'll give you all the details once I've got 'em. Together, we'll knock this out of the park. For now, should we see if we can find anything else useful around here before heading out? I'd like to treat you to lunch for all your help.
[THERE'S NO CURRENCY HERE, BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, that is literally the only way he'll ever be able to treat anyone to anything.]
wrapping! š
Besides, she did just say that heād like to be a good friend to him, and grabbing lunch together, even as thanks, feels like a great way to further that wholesome agenda! ]
That sounds great, Balthus! Iām sure we can find more useful things before we finish up. Youāve got such a great eye for this!
[ Who knows what they'll find? Maybe another watch? What if they even found something that could be fixed up or refreshed into a present for Hilda - would she like that?! Either way, lunch awaits them after, one that they'll surely enjoy. ]
